I wouldn't be able not to keep noticing the scratch, i had one dead pixel on my old laptop once, it drove me crazy, and it wasn't even in the centre of the screen but on the bottom.

a scratch doesn't make it not work. if you are so into apple hardware and casing design that you can't notice apple software design, then don't get it. i adore my iphone and use it all the time - it's got no case and i drop it prob twice a day, sometimes on asphalt, concrete, marble dirt, milk, you name it. it's got hundreds of scratches, even a couple on the screen that are mildly annoying - but fundamentally, my phone works fine, runs all the software any other phone can and has all the features it originally came with (and more, i suppose, since i pwn'ed it to travel with). i think the fact that you started a thread on this subject means you probably shouldn't - either the scratch(es) will bother you so insignificantly, or you'll never get over them

Thanks for your input, guys. I decided to go through with the deal because apart from that scratch, I couldn't see any noticeable flaws with the unit. Also, I looked on ebay and craigslist but I failed to see another cheaper unit that was in the same (or better) condition. On ebay, most of the phones were going for over $450.

Real quickly before this thread dies, I just have to ask one question ... why are the original iPhones still selling for $400+ ? If I buy one on eBay for $ X, I will still have to pay a cellular phone service provider for a monthly voice and data plan. With AT&T, Verizon, or Sprint, on any carrier, it would cost the same in monthly fees as if I was to buy a new phone. Why wouldn't someone just buy the new phone? ?????

Update: I just checked eBay and the 8GB first gen. iPhones are going for about $150 to $350 (depending on condition) right now. There are a whole bunch for $200.

LOLLL i JUST looked at the pic....that is one tiny scratch. mine got one going about 1 inch from the bottom of the screen(the middle) to the middle, and...you CANNOT see it unless the phone is in sleep mode, and you tilt it to a certain angle...so, i dont really care

getting a free 16GB first gen iPhone> paying 200 and over for a 3G iPhone 8GB

Based on what I've been reading, it sounds like a scratch on the screen does NOT affect the function of the touch screen.

i neva said that, it doesnt, but mine is like literally Tiny....its the same size as that, you can barely see it...im saying for you to SEE it, you gotta have phone in sleep mode or off, and tilt it at an angle for the light to bounce of the scratch, so you can see it..

Last night I just sold my 1st gen 4GB Iphone for $330 on Ebay. Bought my 3G 8GB for $199. Those who aren't eligible for an upgrade can't get the cheaper 1st gen phones new any longer and I guess an undiscounted 3G is really high. Compare $330 to $1000 on Ebay for a 3G.

Man bad deal, I would have sold you my first gen 16 gb in mint condition for $400.

$350 wow, my Son just purchased a friend's old 8GB iPhone for $200 after they upgraded to the 3G version for $199. They were happy to essentially get the 3G for free after selling the original for the same price. I then assisted my son in unlocking it with the newest 2.0 software so that he could use it with T-Mobile (he is under contract with them for another year). He is loving the iPhone and the seller is happy with their free upgrade.

I sold a scratched, dented and unlocked first gen 8GB iPhone for $395 on Ebay. The prices aren't falling, so I'd say the OP got a decent deal.
