White box replacements are almost like new. I have had excellent experiences with them. I understand you think your entitled to one by saying "Should", but if you don't have AppleCare or out of warranty, this is the likely your only option.

I've had great experiences with white box replacements. I think refurbs are basically like a brand new iPhone with extra quality control. I've had more trouble with brand new models out of box. Never had an issue with the white box replacements they gave me.

I had a white box 5c refurbished that was mint. Wouldn't have been able to notice the difference if it was in an iconic 5c case/box!
 
I think the refurbs are more carefully scrutinized than new ones coming off of the line.
 
Just my opinion, an Apple refurbished iPhone in new condition is worth more than your now 4 month old used phone with a defect in the display.

I would swap it out.

Contacted Apple, they said they'll take a look at it
Not sure if they're going to replace it, hope so!
