I got the 2.8 ghz and 1 TB. It comes with the integrated Gpu Intel Pro Graphics that is pretty powerful.
I was looking at the 1TB but I don't need that much storage. I just got 512 just in case
I also wasn't even sure if it was worth paying £86 to get 2.5 ghz?

Don't think there is much of a difference between them but last time I changed my mac was 8 years ago so for longevity I took the fastest cpu! Same for the storage.

Is their a big difference between 2.5ghz and 2.8ghz?

I have had both, between the 2.5 and 2.8 variants you will not notice any difference at all, even if you get one with a dedicated gpu. You will only notice a difference with the amd gpu if you start using intensive apps and such, other than that you cannot tell the difference between them.

Correction, I am talking about the 2015 mbp 2.2 and 2.5.

My 2010 MBP is failing (GPU issue) and it will die soon. So I need a new MBP very soon.

I would prefer the 2015 model because its a mature product and has all the ports and you can upgrade the SSD. However I have a hard time deciding. The problem is that the 2015 model with 2.5GHz/16GB/512GB SSD and dGPU costs $2399 and the2016 model with touch bar, 2.6GHz/16GB/512GB SSD and dGPU costs $2429. The prices are essentially the same.

Should I buy the old model for the same price?

The main decision here is the ports and the upgradable SSD in the 2015 model vs the better screen and the more "future proof" ports in the 2016 model.

in that case you might want to go with 2016,

unless you really hate what they've done with it overall, and just want a future proof machine

why not go refurb 2015, save some cash, and feel good about your decision?

Which 2016 touch bar model are you talking about? 15 inch? Where does it cost $2429? It is 2799 on Apples website. The 2399 version has 256 gb ssd.

Student discount BTO 15" base with storage upgrade. Same one I got.

True, that same configuration with student discount in Canada is $500 more expensive as compared to 2015 15 2.5 512 from the refurbishes store.

I was in the same situation and ordered a maxed out 2015 without dgpu (I guess they create much problems) that I don't need for photoshop.
I loved the 2016 design but didn't want a thinner machine with lower battery life or take the risk to get a faulty unit (which is not rare).

OP:

As a law student (as distinguished from someone who might be pursuing a career in media or the arts) you probably don't need to be concerned (all that much) about the GPU or even the CPU speeds.

What you have now should last you right through school.
Just take care of it and don't abuse it!

I've bought a hard case for it! Hopefully it lasts me long!!!!
