Keep it. Its not worth losing the extra money. The processor speed increase is fairly marginal, and while it sounds pretty cool, I dont think its worth returning a notebook for.

Honestly, you ought to hang onto your current MBPro. The current iteration is really very capable and you can't expect any real leaps for another 8 months (Merom - Nehalem).

See if you can even push your new MBPro to its performance limits. I haven't and I output DVI to a 30" ACD.

If you really need to have the newest and best then wait until the rumored NEW MBPro's show up as refurbs on Apple.com and sell yours on eBay.

Apple Higher Education Discounts

Hi Everyone, I'm a long-time reader first-time poster in this forum, but I had to clear this up for everyone:

The higher education discount is the most easily abused discount I've ever been privy to. I've ordered every Apple product I've ever owned through the HE store, and how do you think they verified that I was a student?

They didn't. They never do. They ask me every time for the zip code of my school, and then the name of it, but that's it. No Student I.D. Nothing.

I found this out when my dad was going to buy an ipod (back when the video ipods first came out), and I told him to use my student discount since I wasn't going to be buying an ipod that year. Much to my surprise, the ipod arrived without him ever asking about my i.d. number or anything.

So, bottom line, they don't know if you're actually a student, and they probably don't know if you've already used your discount. Maybe (just, maybe) they can tell if you use the same apple ID, but that's easily duplicated.

I'm not trying to tell anyone to scam apple, god knows I haven't had the privilege of buying multiple laptops a year (even at education prices...). But in your case, it seems pretty legitimate, so go for it.

One more thing: It took me a long time to get over my "newest shiniest thing" complex. Don't feed yours! It's not healthy for you or your wallet!

I got an imac yesterday, and was tempted to use the student discount, I didnt for two reasons. First, Im a "I want it now" person, and the Apple store is only 30 minutes away, second, the student discount really isnt all that much, I got the 24"/2.4 imac, and I think the discount would have saved about 50 or 100 bucks...

I converted over on the 19th, and i'll tell you this. If they upgrade the MBP within the 2 weeks I might replace mine for the $179 difference. It depends on how much of an update it is, other than that if it doesn't change by Feb 2nd then I'll be happy with the version I have.

yeah this seems reasonable..i think these next two weeks will be plagued with anxiety then haha

today specifically ive been freaking ouutttttt

I would take it back.....updated MPBs are definitely coming soon. I'm not paying $2100CAD for a "soon to be outdated" machine. I want the newest technology in there.

if i took it back, i know i would have to pay a 200$ restocking fee...but would i be refunded the tax too? cuz thats another 200$ in itself...

also, if i were to, would it be wise/unwise to reinstall mac os x with the cds?

I disagree: the forthcoming update is going to be minor at best. Penryn bump which results in no real speed increase, but a bit of battery life increase (20 to 30 min, MAX).

You might see Multitouch, but I really doubt it.

I think Fall'08 will be the real update.

I could be wrong.

ah well I don't know, I feel a macbook pro minor update coming though. Just the Penryn speed bump. For $2100CAD, I'd still take a 20-30min battery life increase over the old.

Erm I believe you can't return BTO items. Someone might have to correct me on this one.

"Apple offers certain products that may be custom-configured to your specifications, and Apple encourages you to review your order carefully. Since a custom-configured product is built to your specifications, the order cannot be changed, modified, or canceled once your order is in production. Please review Apple’s return and refund policy carefully before ordering."

I believe your only remaining options are if it is:
- DOA
- Superseded

You have no recourse otherwise.

if they do upgrade and you keep yours, you will feel like kicking puppies. however, i feel like kicking puppies right now waiting for apple to stop playing assgrab and update them already.

By BTO do you mean something upgraded during the checkout? If so, its not. It was bought at an apple store standard. Although, do u know if they take returns on stuff that had software downloaded from the internet (such as limewire, or i put office on it)..

in which case, would redownloading mac os x cover allt aht up
