I think the creaking sounds are a sign that your Retina is haunted. A lot of Retina owners have reported seeing ghosts on their screens. Particularly if the screen is made by LG. Apparently LG had a tragic death in their factory that was not adequately resolved.

Lmao if that's the case when you buy a Retina MacBook pro you also need to buy a ouija board

I don't think people who are saying that creaking noises are normal realize that there is a well known defect with some of the rMBPs with the bottom case being manufactured mis-aligned or with screw sets that can't torque down all the way creating an uneven case.

Wow, really? Well known defect? Funny how this didn't show up in any review articles. Thank goodness we have you to let us know about all of these "well known defect" rotfl

I would live with the scratch and have the genius bar tighten everything up to get rid of the noise

I also have the noise on the left side. But hell no I ever send this one back. The screen is perfect, and I mean perfect. No backlight bleed, no dead pixels no IR and it is a Samsung. I would never take the risk ending up with an inferior screen.

In your original post you said you returned 6 because of cosmetic blemishes never once a mention of ghosting..just sayin

I know, it was just that in the OPs post he was talking about a blemish he had so I just wanted to mention that through my experiences every one that I've had thus far had some sort of blemish or cosmetic issue. It was my bad for not also mentioning that they all had ghosting issues (hence the amount of exchanges).

If everything internally is perfect and screen, keep it. A couple nicks isn't worth a return in exchange for a chance to receive a defective hardware. Your Mac will be scratched eventually, but there are cases where people have kept their Mac's in "perfect" condition.

Don't let it bother you, you spend most of your time on the screen then looking at the nick anyways.

The creak I think could be repaired just bring it to apple store

Hey guys i've got til monday to return my retina macbook pro, it is running perfect the only flaws are there is a tiny scratch on the bottom and it creaks a bit when i hold it with one hand, is it worth returning?
If you were in the same position what would you do?

Are you planning to sell it used? People on ebay seem very demanding in wanting a scratch-free chassis, regardless of how old it us or how little you'd be trying to sell it for...

If the issue on the chassis is the only thing wrong with it, and it's on the bottom, I wouldn't -- but I'd still note that, for $2000+, there should be nothing wrong with it and not even a simple blemish. But scratches and other nitpicks seem to have gotten worse since 2009... exchange it and you'll probably get something worse off inside (excessive thermal paste, a warped screw or two, etc...).

Speck sells clear plastic covers that protect the casing. Especially if the blemish is near an edge, the cover refracts light and shrouds it perfectly.

As for the lid, I'd rather have a creak noise than have the lid so loose it flops around like a fish that jumped out of its aquarium...

How about my case with the screen rubber issue as in the photo below?
I wiped the screen with dusty micro fibre cloth when I took the photo.

Apple rep will contact me about a replacement on tomorrow. It would take 2 days for DHL to pick up and 1-2 weeks for a replacement to arrive. :(
It is base model with no problems on LG screen.
If replace, I might want to upgrade ram to 16 but the rep said I will have to place a new order. (purchased under student discount)
I don't really know how it works, this is my first mac. Please advise.

LOL, My box was ripped, so i phoned up apple to request a new box, they told me to return the macbook and the'll ship a new one out with a new box. If this isnt OCD i dunno what is.

Haha, Since it was a custom rMBP i didnt decide to do that so the woman on the phone offered me £40. Which is pretty decent. So it cant hurt to ask.

And you're pretty arrogant, Lower your tone a couple of notches!

Lg

if it has an LG display with IR or Yellow whites, return it

Sarcasm /= arrogance. Your inability to tell the difference? Priceless.

This thread is exactly why I only buy used machines. I spend so much money on a brand new one, when it creaks or get a scratch I tend to freak out. Now, I buy a used machine, I save a bunch, it may have a few nicks or scratches but I didn't do it so I now longer worry about it and I can really enjoy my machine!

If it bothers you enough to invest your valuable time by posting the question to a bunch of strangers, then I would return it. However, even if the new machine is "perfect" it will never remain that way unless you do not take it out of the box. At that point, it is down hill. It may give you some peace of mind though.

Remember these are tools. Very nice, well engineered tools; but tools none the less. Use the machine for a purpose and you will focus less on the cosmetics and really enjoy the beauty and functionality that your MacBook Pro has. Scratches dents and all. :)

Hi Guys

Just want to clarify something... a creaking Macbook retina is the biggest problem there is. What it actually means is the entire unibody is bent, and therefore making the backplate not fit, and therefore creak.

I've had two (out of nine) like this, and I replaced the backplate on one of them and the creaking was still there. I then noticed if you press down the screen whislt looking at the macbook from the side, it isn't laying perfectly flat, because the screen bends inwards. Normal Macbooks don't do this.

So, to everyone who has a creaking macbook, RETURN IT! Asap. :)

It's a fairly rare problem, and it was probably just a faulty batch in the early produced ones.

My very first one had this.. and then my 9th one had it (bought on august 24th).. but it still had Lion installed, so this suggests it was one of the earlier ones made and had been lying around the store for months.

I'm interested to hear if anyone has been having this problem even though their macbook was made after the release of mountain lion.

I've gone through 6 rMBPs and out of all them I found some sort of blemish or scratch. It's just a matter of how much you are willing to accept it. I have a few stuff on this one but it was far more accepting then the previous ones. At least with these the "paint" is still on it where as the previous ones it was black where the scratch/dent was.

My current one also has the creaking sound but under normal usage it isn't noticeable, I only get the sound when the computer is off and I run my hand under the bottom. However once the computer heats under normal usage I can't reproduce the noise.

I'd have told you to GTFO outa my shop and jog on down to the Sony Centre, see if you can't hit double figures!
