so i have a 64gb iphone 11 purple on 18.7.2 i keep getting notification to upgrade to 26.4.2 should i update or leave as is i know sometimes when you update you risk a slower phone with no way to downgrade

I have an iPhone SE2 on 26 which has the same A13 chipset as the iPhone 11 but only has 3GB RAM. It stutters more and is noticeably laggier.

Note, there’s an important security update 18.7.8 available. You should be able to find it on Settings - General - Software Update. You just need to scroll down to the bottom. It’s very inconspicuous so quite easy to miss.

I have the 512GB 11 Pro Max and I'm on 26.4.2. I have zero issues. The first day I went to 26, I took a battery hit, but the day after it evened out and has been fine since. I attribute that to all the after upgrade processes.

With your 64GB iPhone 11, I would not recommend upgrading to iOS 26 on this device. It will lag terribly trying to run the current iOS. I have my 512GB 11 Pro Max on iOS 26.3 (build 23D127) and it lags terribly for my use. I regret updating my 11PM to iOS 26.

What are your uses for your phone? I have the exact same phone, but no lag on iOS 26.
Both my 512GB 11 Pro Max and my 512GB 11 Pro are now "retired" devices set aside within my iPhone collection. I am currently using my "new to me" 1TB Blue Titanium 15 Pro as my daily although in my signature you see I have the 1TB Space Black Air and 1TB Deep Blue 17 Pro, I have been favoring using my 15 Pro as my daily iPhone for the time being.

I have found that today with iOS 26, with both my 11 Pro series iPhones being upgraded to iOS 26.3 that they both lag far too much for my use so that is why I retired both of them. To be perfectly honest I feel that iOS 18 is the highest you should upgrade for these two devices.

I imagine that if I used my 11PM for more than just calls, texting, email and some light web browsing when out things might be different. But as it is, I have computers for the rest of that stuff and so I'm not getting the lag you describe with iOS 26. That is assuming that your lag came from using apps and your phone as a substitute computer/game console/media device (which a lot of people do).

iOS 18 was okay, but I much prefer iOS 26.

I don't game on my iPhones except for Majong and Solitaire so those games do not tax the phone. I use my iPhones for calls, GPS Navigation, and other ancillary tasks that for my use case the 13 minis handle much faster and better than both my 11 Pro series iPhones do so that is why I retired both to my iPhone colleciton.

Even on something as texting I have found delays in calling up the messaging app and from past experiences with having unnecessary lagging I moved on to better iPhones with better processing capabilities.

Strange. Again, I don't have that issue. Possibly, it could just be down to the fact that because I do not have a current model iPhone, I don't know something is lagging. But I don't think so.

As for GPS/NAV, I purposely bought a 1st Gen iPad Mini for that and a dash mount for it. I don't use it often though.

It is an iPad not an iPhone I know, so, YMMV and all that, but, Safari is very laggy on iOS 26. As above, I should not have upgraded. The SE3 iPhone (faster processor, more RAM, more storage) is doing fine on iOS 26.

Yeah, again differences I guess. I don't use Safari. If I do use a browser on my iPhone (or iPad), it's something else. For the last couple years that's been Vivaldi.

I absolutely despise and hate Safari and do not use it on anything it will run on.

for the cars I own and drive placing an iPad on my dash is too bulky for me and that is why I use my iPhones on a mount to provide additional display guages my car's gauge cluster does not have. I find this much more useful and my in car displays are more than adequate to display my nav data.

When I started doing this, it was a few years ago. I started with a G-Pad that I'd got from Sprint. That was WiFi only, but I bought two in-car devices from my carrier for in-car WiFi. The tablet went on a cupholder mount in my car. That elevated the tablet to around the height of the air vents. Eventually that car died, so it's been a couple years since I did this because my wife drives the other car and doesn't care for this.

Well, the second car also died and we got a new one. But it's a much larger car, a crossover SUV. So, now there's sufficient dash space that I was able to use a dash mount. I was using it with my larger 6th gen iPad until I got the Mini. The G-Pad died a long time ago.

I just prefer larger screens for that. If I have to look away from the road to see the moving map, I want to not have to squint to make out street names and such. And I don't want to have to be zoomed in so far to compensate on a small screen.

We use things differently is all. My sister uses her iPhone for the same thing you do - only she drives around with it in her hand. No mount. SMH!

The "issue" is that the iPad in question is the 9th gen 10.2" that is only two years old. The A13 Bionic chip has "only" 3 GB RAM, and that may be the issue, but also, not enough flash to comfortably update automatically. As I've stated previously, my primary use is as an auxiliary device for iCloud enabled Photos, and, it does a good job with that. Except that I had to turn that off because it is incompatible with the stream of iOS 26 updates.

Hmm, maybe they also differ with point releases or indexing just takes a very long time to complete?

I tested my iPhone SE2 on 26.4 just now and it's being quite responsive compared to before.

I remember on 26.1 to 26.3, the general UI lags quite a bit and I'd often second guess if I tapped on something because it would take several seconds for the phone to respond.

That could be. It seems to me that Apple is releasing point updates for iOS 26 faster (and more) than they did for iOS 18. Maybe fixing internal bugs I guess, aside from security fixes.

not sure - my iPhone SE (2020) doesn't seem to lag any more than usual under 26.4.2 but then again I basically use it as a phone, for text messages, fitness and health apps, and maybe to check time now and then - so I could be missing something

As mentioned you should update to 18.7.8. Unless you want to make use of a specific iOS 26 feature, or an app you want to use requires it, there is zero reason to upgrade to iOS 26. You will still be able to do it later at any time, should the need arise.

By the way, you can activate iOS 18 Public Betas on your phone to get rid of the iOS 26 upgrade notifications.

If you want to inflict pain on yourself, upgrade. As it is, you have a stable, less resource intensive OS. If it works, don’t break it.

I would use this as an opportunity to finally upgrade. iOS27 will likely include loads of stability fixes for Liquid Glass the 11 line will never see. You don’t need to break the bank: I use a 16e and it’s incredibly quick and supported into the future.

I'd update to iOS 18.7.8 for all the security updates since 18.7.2

Skip iOS 26

I have iOS 26.4.2 on an iPhone 14 (6GB RAM) and an iPhone SE 3 on iOS 18.7.8 (4GB RAM). Even with the extra RAM, there is still a bit of lag on the iPhone 14, but not on the iPhone SE 3.

For example, when I'm browsing through the "Offers" section of the AmEx app, whenever I add/save an Offer, there's a slight lag in saving it. After the Offer is saved, I'll swipe up to see what other Offers are available. When I do, there's a slight stutter before I can continue to swipe up to see other Offers.

I do not have this lag and stutter issue on the iPhone SE 3.

I also have lag with the Apple Stocks app on the iPhone 14. It seems to take an extra second or two for it to update. No such problems on the iPhone SE 3.

I don't think it's a RAM issue with iOS 26. It just sucks. I'd downupgrade my iPhone 14 to iOS 18.7.8 if I could.
