I have the 8gb ram version with 512gb. I actually like the keyboard except how loud it is and have had no issues with the keyboard or the machine except for once my one year old got some cookie crumbs on it but I got them out with a q-tip and have had no issues ever since. the heaviest thing I do on this machine is photoshop and I've never ran into issues. If it weren't for true tone and a more reliable/quieter keyboard I wouldn't even be considering it. What do you all think?

Try to see how much you could sell it for and then ask yourself if it's worth that price and the trouble of selling.

I like to keep my things for as long as they do the job well and with the keyboard repair program the 2017 isn't that risky anymore. I wouldn't be surprised if they started replacing the keyboards with v3.

Thank you. Would $1700 be a fair price to ask or should I ask for higher? My MBP is in pristine condition. If I have to pay a lot out of pocket I just won't upgrade. Good points about the keyboard repair program.

If I were you, I would let my one year old play with it some more. Then you would need a replacement while it is being repaired........ ;)

How often do you buy new Macs? If every 3-4 years, I’d probably wait. If you have a keyboard problem, it seems you’ll get the new updated keyboard when sent off for service (update: not the case as originally thought). Then as for TrueTone, if you prefer a warmer display, adjust the display’s colour profile. I always ran my Macs slightly warmer (not so far to be orange), even if it didn’t fit in with the environment.

What do you run yours on? I buy iPads and iPhones every year, but Macs usually not every year.
[doublepost=1532060476][/doublepost]Just to update everyone, so far I have had zero offers for my 2017 MBP w/touchbar on Facebook marketplace. I suppose I could try ebay. I will likely just hold on to my 2017, but am worried about the keyboard situation because I just sent my 12" 2017 MacBook in for the keyboard replacement this week.

You are going through latest and greatest syndrome right now. We all go through it when new products are released. I bet if I lived next to an Apple Store, I would spend $1,700 every year. Its just not practical thing to do though.

The 2017 is a fantastic laptop and you should try getting some more mileage out of it. You should not be looking to upgrade until 2020 or next year if you really need the performance.

My impulse buy nature had me wanting to splurge next year when I visit the US, but reading the discussions and watching the YouTube videos, it has brought things into perspective. The 2018, while a great upgrade is not a must have, especially for 2017 owners.

I am on a 2015 and I holding out until 2020. I usually don't visit the US until spring time, so I will be in a conundrum, because if Apple keeps up its current trend, I would be stuck buying the 2019 in 2020. That is unless I take another trip in the summer or fall.

So, give it some time and within a few months, you will have moved on from this period. I'm sure when iPhone season comes, the syndrome will appear again.

I personally wouldn’t think that the upgrade is worth it. Based on your currently complaints and wants with the keyboard being loud, instead of buying a new MacBook Pro, maybe you can try this?

https://www.moshi.com/en/product/cl...ctor-for-macbook-pro-with-touch-bar/us-layout

It should firstly muffle your typing plus should beable to protect a bit from crumbs and what not.

As for True Tone, can’t help with that.

If it works for you it works, maybe wait another year or two when Apple does a full redesign.

You’re right. I have this syndrome in a bad way when it comes to apple products. I upgrade iPads every year.
I also upgrade my iPhone every year but I do the device payment program so I’m not out much money. It doesn’t really make much financial sense though to upgrade Macs every year. I know that it is not logical, but it’s like part of my brain doesn’t care lol. Outside of this forum, most people don’t upgrade Apple products ever year like we do. I know it sounds silly but sometimes I feel like I have to keep my mind off of it and hope the feeling and syndrome passes.

in a similar boat, with similar use case, only with the 2016 13" TB model. True Tone is something that I appreciate and love (I can turn it off when I need) as overall it is great on the eyes. However, the screen on the 2016 and up notebooks are not bad at all to begin with. Better battery, True Tone, and two more cores does sound like a good improvement, but is it a candidate for upgrade!

I am able to get $1300 for my 2016 model, you should be able to get $1700 nice and easy.

@Jacbolee23
If you go from 2017 13" to a 2018 15" i think it will be a more dramatic change..more real estate etc etc (beware if you go 15" go with i7 and not i9)
But if you go 13 for 13" you will get a slightly better keyboard and a more reliable one (hey the 2018 can save you if you spill some drops of water) you get true tone, its very nice (expect for photography when you should close it), the speakers a little bit better, a little faster SSD, hey siri, and the 2018 will hold its value better than any 2016/2017 because of its keyboard

I think it’s worth it to upgrade because the speed improvement is huge. Basically it’s like having the base 2017 15” mbp speed in a 13” form factor.

Unless you have money to throw away, it's not worth upgrading "from one year to the next".

You said above the 2017 is running fine.
I'd keep using it, and wait at least another year or two...

Yep. It is a massive improvement in speed. The GPU is a little weak but otherwise it's quite solid. You can finally get 15: performance in a 13" model. Not to mention finally 4 full speed TB-3 ports

Is it a massive improvement in speed though it in just doing simple tasks? My 2017 is very fast for word processing internet and etc

I am, however, thinking that while there are CPU and RAM updates, the graphics will be a sore point and for this, the upgrade from 13" 2016 and 13" 2017 notebooks to 13" 2018 might not be fully worth it. Welcome all opinions on this!

I'm gonna try my best to hold out until 2020; what I plan to do then is like consolidate my computing down to just one. All my music, videos, vm's on a maxed Core i9, 4 TB configuration.

The money I would have spent upgrading every 2 years would just go towards that. So, I end up getting the best bang for my buck. It just makes so much sense now. I will also buy an Apple 32 inch Thunderbolt 4 Cinema Display to go with it.

The problem for me is can I wait? This hand is already itching.

Why not? Even if it only gives you something new and fun for a while it's still fun for that time, if you itch next year get that as well :).

I honestly went back and forth with my decision to upgrade my 2009 MacBook Pro for months.... picked it up a week ago, it was the best decision I ever made! It’s such a good machine.

I am the same way with most of my Apple products. I typically upgrade my iPhone annually, I appreciate that the iPad updates have gone further apart so I don’t upgrade as often.

With MacBooks, I try to hold on for as long as I can. Had they stayed Dual Core on the 13, I would had held onto my 2017. But having the power of a 15” in that 13” size, there was no way I was passing that up. For me the True Tone and keyboard were extra bonuses. I don’t think I have been this satisfied with a computer in a long time. This version I plan to hold onto for a good 4-5 years.

The trade in is tricky. I purchased interest free on my Barclay card, I’m in no rush to allow my 2017 to sell at too much of a hit. I have it priced to sell, but a little higher than others. Comes down to patience.

All depends on what you need, if the benefit in power and upgrades is worth it productivity wise or personally then yes. I just picked up a 2017 Touch Bar and have no problem with what I use it for and the benefit of picking it up like new open box for a great price outweighed the additions to the 2018. The keyboard doesn't bother me and True Tone doesn't make a big difference in my opinion.

I think 1700 is priced way too high for a used 2017. For reference I have seen several sales for brand new 2017 Touch Bar models for around 1400. I think you will likely see between 1200-1400 depending on condition, accessories, etc (if you're talking USD)
