The current macbook I have is the 15" mid-2014 2.8Ghz i7 16gb of ram and 2gb nvidia card. Here is the geekbench: https://browser.geekbench.com/macs/363

My university is offering the 2017 15" 2.8Ghz i7 16gb of ram 4gb Radeon Pro for $2,349 instead of the usual $2,799. Here is the geekbench: https://browser.geekbench.com/macs/418

When looking at the geekbench, it seems like the computer I have is still pretty good compared to the new one.

I use the computer for college work but mainly video editing on the go. I'm considering upgrading to the new one, but I don't know if its worth the price, even after selling my current one.

Any suggestions?

Unless you're having problems with what you have now, I'd wait until the 2018 MBPro's come out (probably late spring-early summer 2018).

These will definitely be a "big jump upward", particularly where 4k video is concerned.

I still miss my mid-2012 model. I was happy to keep it and had taken it in for a new battery to get more life out of it, but Apple offered to trade for a new machine instead so I thought it would be a good deal. I never use the touchbar and miss standard ports.

if you feel your three year old machine is running slow; backup all your data. Then erase your drive and install fresh OS, then fresh versions of the Apps, then finally your data. This will ensure the code from OS, Apps, and data are no longer fragmented and things will load more quickly. While this takes time, it will get a rid of old and forgotten pieces of code and your machine will feel fresh.
Saving money is not a crime.

Are you constantly editing 4k and is your current system failing to meet your editing needs?

I'm on a 2014 MBP also waiting for 2018.

It just doesn't look like the improvement is enough to warrant an upgrade, even at that pretty decent price.

I mean, if your machine was lagging, sure. But I bet it's still running stuff well, like mine for the most part.

Good luck.

Don't bother upgrading. Your old one is fast enough and you'd only have to buy a whole new bunch of adaptors for the new one.
