This makes me more confident about waiting for the 09 models to come out.

Well to add to your confidence a bit more.

An article from electronista today (actually seems like this was news from about a week ago though )

http://www.electronista.com/articles/09/02/27/flash.prices.climb/

...although mentions nothing of a 32gb chip.

And something else I noticed from the second link trainguy provided for us.

http://www.toshiba.com/taec/news/press_releases/2008/memy_08_536.jsp

"A wide product line-up supports capacities from 1 to 32GB. The high-capacity 32GB device can record up to 560 hours of data at a bit rate of 128Kbps3 and can record4 hours of full spec high definition video and 7.3 hours of standard definition video 4."

To the original poster, the iPhone will be discontinued in 2009 due to the economy. Adding to the chopping block are the folwing products iMac, MacBook Pro and Air as well.

Thanks for stopping by.

Be very careful if GPS is one of the major reasons for purchasing an iPhone 3G since it has one of the most handcuffed "GPS systems" on the cellphone market. Most reasonably priced cellphones on the current market have much better implemented GPS systems.

Now, if you think looking at a little blue dot while waiting for Google Maps to actually load is adequate, then the iPhone will be perfect for you. But, as for using it for navigation purposes (as opposed to entertainment purposes), it falls short.

Yes!!! We don't know what's coming, but it's been guaranteed that over summer something new will be released. It may just be a spec boost, but it may be a new model. Wait and see unless you need it now. :)

One of the best decisions I made was NOT waiting and purchasing my iphone.

I was waiting for the fabled 32GB model refresh since November. I purchased my iPhone 2 weeks ago. I'm glad I did. The waiting was driving me insane.

The June release of the new iPhone is not written in stone. No one knows what will be offered. I was thinking of waiting until then as well, but decided that I needed a new phone now and wanted to play with the features NOW rather than later.

I know purchasing now probably means I need to buy the new iPhone at full price when it is released. I really don't care. I like the current iPhone, even with all it's faults. What phone doesn't have faults?

Just buy it now and enjoy it. You'll learn to work around the shortcomings and just enjoy the iphone for what it is. A fun device that you will carry with you wherever you go.

Yeah the only reason I am waiting is because my contract isn't up until july. Once thats up I will be in the market for a new carrier as well as a new phone. :)

wait.
the 1st gen iphone and iphone 3g attracted you.
so the new iphone will not despair..

Take this for whatever it's worth, but both an AT&T representative and an Apple employee told me even purchasing the phone at unsubsidized pricing now or later, any iPhone purchase requires an extension of contract. Buy in June and you'll be looking at another 2 year contract extension on top of the 2 year contract you signed for your iPhone purchase 2 weeks ago.

We'll ask you in June whether you're still happy with your purchase. ;) Just kidding. I'm trying to hold out til June, but I may not make it. Several of my friends have 3G iPhones and they get signals where I do not on my original iPhone.

Here's hoping Apple releases iPhones that do not require contract extensions. I'm hoping they open up the platform to use with anyone. Imagine if their iMacs only worked with Comcast cable modems.

I was in your shoes last month. My Moto Q and Verizon contract had been up for several months and I waited until after the Jan MacWorld event which produced nadda. I dove right into an AT&T store the next week and purchased my white 16G iPhone. My personal believe, assuming that there will even be a new iPhone this summer, is that there will not be that much of an upgrade in hardware. Much of the upgrades might even be avail to us first and second gen iPhone buyers via updates.

I am on track to upgrade in the summer of 2010. :D

The waiting is driving me insane too. I've decided NOT to wait and will get my iphone next weekend. I don't care about increased storage and who knows what the other improvements will be. So I'm going to get the phone now and enjoy it.

Well, I don't blame those who are going to go ahead and buy now because the current model is so much fun to play with. I just came from the coffee shop where my friend showed me all the fun apps. he had put on his 3G. But I've seen enought reasons here to go ahead and wait for the new model. June will be here before you know it.

i'd go ahead and get it. i got the 2g iphone after it had been out for 6 months and didn't encounter any of the initial bugs/problems other early adopters did. i got the 3g iphone on launch day and had non-stop OS bugs up until what, 2.1?

if it were me, i would probably just get the 3g now, and if they release a new one in june, grab it in december AFTER they've had the public beta test it for them.

get it if u want it.

I've had my 3g since launch day and plan on grabbing the next one on launch day as well. Looking forward to it.

Very wise choice. June is just around the corner.

I have been following MacRumors Buyer's Guide Advice (Don't Buy - Updates Soon) since before Christmas - so, having waited this long - and having learned my lesson in the past for not following The Guide - I wait.

Think of all the additional iPhones that ATT/Apple would sell if they offered an easy upgrade path (just sell the returned as refurbs to China!) to those of us on Hold.

ps: Unless we are referring to Geologic Time, perhaps the Buyer's Guide folks should redefine 'soon' :p

For all you who don't think a new iphone is coming out this summer, you're wrong. A lot of people believe it is coming out in summer and if it is not announced then well then they are idiots because they forgot about this small thing known as a stock market, if they don't want their stock prices to fall they have no choice.

BTW I'm also waiting till summer to get it

I got mine two weeks ago. 4 months is just too much waiting time... Since I was even considering waiting for the Palm Pre... but I'm very glad I got it. I've wasted so much time toying with my iphone in the past 2 weeks... maybe I shouldn't be glad I got it haha. But all I really see them coming out with for the new iphone is upgrading it from 8-16GB to 16-32GB and probably keeping the price the same. I'm perfectly find with 16GB of storage already. And if anything they'll update many of the flaws on the iPhone, but none of them are big enough for me (or at least not yet) so I'm fine with it. I just see them adding features that you can already get by jailbreaking (such as video recording and more preferences).

Just like they had no choice to release information about Steve Jobs health. They sat and waited and waited as the stocks dropped. Then released news waited a week then told us Steve was stepping down.

Yes they have a choice. The weren't very on top of things with Steves health even though it affected the stock price.

Nevertheless I think they will release a phone this summer. :p

The whole Jobs handling was a debacle in itself, as was the abrupt cancellation of the Stevenote and subsequent pulling out of MW (which they said they were planing for the last full year...right). I don't think Apple realized how much their stock was going to be affected until it was too late. The only reason why Jobs wrote that first letter about his health was due to tumbling stock prices (ie hasty damage control). There really was no other reason to divulge such person health information. Then a week later out comes another statement that was incongruent with the first. I bet they wish they could do those few months over.

I think a new phone will be released this summer. If Apple wants to continue to be competitive in the mobile market and keep the edge they have with the iPhone then Apple will need to release a new model in the summer.

My thinking about purchasing or waiting. It's silly to waste time thinking about the past or future. It's better to think about the hear and now. We have no control over what happens in the future. the past is what it is. You can't change that either. You only have control over what you do now.

In the summer(or around that time frame) Apple will release a new model. It could just be a minor upgrade. Higher capacity slightly faster processor, better camera, software update that includes copy/paste, push notifications etc.

Or it could be the revolutionary device that everyone here wants. Dual processor, discrete 3G graphics, higher storage, front and back camera etc.

If Apple releases a slight upgrade people who buy the iphone now won't feel so bad. They've been using their iphone for months and putting it to good use. Whatever minor software updates introduced will be available to 3G users as well.

If Apple releases a major upgrade, I wouldn't feel so compelled to get one right away. This is new technology and a new development path for Apple. Knowing from past experience their may be some software/hardware glitches on release. I'd rather wait for Apple to clean up the little bits and pieces and purchase the new iPhone around late december or this time next year. Whatever software updates should trickle down to 3G users as well.

If you can wait, then by all means wait. If you are struggling on a decision now, it means you really want want one. But make your decision based on needs and on your financial ability to afford the phone/contract. If you don't see yourself being able to purchase a new phone in 1-2 years then wait for the newer model.
