I have the same question - the buyers guide says do not buy - updates soon, and yet I cant find any mention of an upgrade apart from the recent 2.2 firmware option - so I am confused as to whether I should take the plunge or not - if anyone can explain the buyers guide status that would be much appreciated!

I don't understand why everyone insults others for asking this question. It's a legitimate question.

Perhaps because there has been no less than 30+ discussions on this very subject in the last 30 days?

Tell you what, how would everyone feel if I started a post that asked why only one of my iPhone speakers worked? And how about it gets asked again tomorrow, or perhaps 2 or 3 times before tomorrow even got here? And then it was asked again the day after, and so on.

That is essentially what's happening with these threads.

For those waiting...

If you really going to wait wait until summer dont waste it on a 32 gb if that happens. I bought the 3g and waited since iphone 1st gen 16gb i decided to wait until summer. If you are gonna buy an iphone its probably best you do it in anew revision not in a memory boost.

@OP i would buy now... or wait until summer.

I bought my 3G a couple of weeks ago and I don't regret it at all. I know of the rumors of the upgrades and I chose to buy now anyway.

Most of the replies to the original question are based on the
premise that nothing much besides memory will change.

Using the ipod as an example, I see the POSSIBILITY of a major
design change for the third revision. A lot could change. As with
everything tech, they need to give you motivation to buy the new "thing."

Ah, yes, but this wasn't part of the original question.

Apple put all OS changes on hold to get the 3G out the door. Since Snow Leapord is in the works, do you really think there will be a "major design" change any time soon?

I still need a mid-tower as soon as cash frees up, but no sooner dag burn it.

Please, forgive my ignorance. I am a total Apple newbie. Im interested in purchasing a White 16gb iPhone 3g. With the new 2.2 update, Im wondering if it has been jailbroken yet? Is it hard to jail break the iPhone 3g? I see a lot of people with jail broken iPhone's and the stuff you can do with a jail break is amazing I think.

Another question I have is, if I go and buy a 3g, I jail break 2.2 (assuming you can). When 2.2.01 or 2.3 or what ever the next update will be comes out, if I upgrade to that will it undo the jail break? will I have to do it all over again?

There is a 2.2 jailbreak out already. It is extremely easy to do it on the iPhone. I suggest going to check this site out: www.modmyi.com

If you want to get rid of the jailbreak, or update, you can simply restore the phone in iTunes by pressing a button.

Not to mention all the people who bought iPhone 3Gs are locked into a 3 year contract, and the hardware as it stands now does not sway potential buyers away from the iPhone. It's all about costs vs. results. There is no incentive to update the iPhone because everyone that has one won't get one from 3 years (I speak of the original 3G adopters), and new customers aren't going elsewhere because of any aspect of the hardware.

In fact, the only reason people look elsewhere is firmware related complaints: MMS, copy paste, etc, which all have NOTHING to do with the hardware. Therefore there will not be an update next year. Not a chance in hell. Hope this helps the OP and the 50 other people who ask this question every day to decide.

Get one now and then get the new one when it comes out. I had an 8g original then upgraded to the 16g original when it came out then upgraded to the 16g 3g when it came out and guess what if another one comes out ill pay whatever it cost to get the new one and if its not money they want they can have my wife.

I will keep posting this information until people stop making threads like this

---------------------

people speculate that the new 32gb will be coming out soon, but no one knows this

the reason Apple needed to update the 2g iphone was that it was lacking 3g and a GPS chip. Apple also decided to increase the size from 4-8 to 8-16 gb.

while it seems likely that apple will release 16-32 gb models in its next release this is speculation

If you go here

http://weblogs.redeyechicago.com/iph...al-reason.html

you will see that the highest capacity nand chip being used is 16gb ( 128 gigabit )
the iphone uses 1x because it only has one slot
the Ipod touch uses 2x because it has two slots

Unless Apple redesigns its internal logic board, or a company releases a 256gigabit chip ( which currently does not exist) don't expect Apple to release a 32gb iPhone anytime soon

in other words if you need or want the iPhone just buy it now

Unless you're very happy with what you've got, summer's a long way away. MWSF isn't really that far away if you just wanted to hang on and see what happens. I've been waiting for my contract to finish and there are just three days left. :D I think I might hang on and see what happens on 5 January, not because I want a 32GB but just in case one is introduced and the 16GB drops a bit in price. It's so close now, and I've waited so long already that a bit longer won't hurt. Of course, if there is a change, we might be back to queues again, but oh well.

The main feature in the next iPhone is going to be where you hold the phone to your head and think of an app or song and it will get automatically downloaded to your phone. As Apple strives to make it easier and easier to generate revenue for their itunes store..... forget about MMS, text forward, copy and paste or anything else that users have been asking for since the phone was released. why would they worry about any of that it wont generate any itunes store revenue.... you know because apple is a struggling company and they need every penny they can squeeze out of you
