Wow. Even scrubbing that video it was overly long. Laptops are a tool, not an investment purchase. Buy what you need, when you need it, there will most definitely be something else a year or 3 down the road you will want more than what you currently have.
Well kinda depends on the person, anything I'm spending this kind of money I'm investing in it that it's going to last me a while and work when I wanted it to every time. So in that case it's an investment. Apple products also hold their value over time and are known to be very well made. I know what your talking about but it's still investing in something you want to feel good about and that its product will return benefits to the user over time.

What I mean by investment purchase is that nobody buys a laptop with the expectation that it's monetary value will increase or that it will be able to be sold at a higher price for profit. The value of a laptop, regardless of brand, declines the moment you crack the seal on the box

That's funny because I watched that same video yesterday as it appeared on my u tube homepage and I watched the whole thing it was long lol. He has some good points though. I think he represents a lot of Apple users, committed to the brand yet after trying the 2016 MBP they went back to their older MacBook, in his case his 2012. I've heard a lot of users say they will stick with their older model. This is not what Apple wants to hear as with any business there looking at profits.

He was a little over the top with the dongles rant but I understood where he was coming from, I could tell he wasn't just ranting against Apple as he really wanted to like the 2016. I could tell he did like Apple but that this release wasn't up to par for him.

As someone who has to do presentations in random places on occasion I thought that was the best part of his whole video :)
I also have a little bag of dongles that end up strewn over a desk like confetti till I find the one that works in a given place - and my 2014 MBP has a variety of ports

Yup agree, it makes the refurbished Apple laptops an even better deal, like new and up to $450.00 off

So if I show up someplace for a presentation...as with a Hollywood producer last week who wanted to see my work, how exactly does the new machine cause anyone an issue?

With the 2015 model I needed a bag of cables if I didn't know what kind of display I'd be working with. But 99% of the time my HDMI connector was fine. Now I have one that is USBC at the other end, so no difference at all in what I carry. That's assuming I have no idea of what I'll be connecting to.

I carry exactly ONE extra dongle, which is a adapter for the old USB. And I'f I'm on a shoot I carry the same card reader I bought two years ago and same cable for tethering my Nikon cameras.

So help me out here...where's the meltdown for presentations?

I was in the same situation as you are with an 2011 MBP and watched some interesting vlogs that completly changed my mind. Especially from Mobiletechreview and photoshopCafe.

I dont agree with everything he says but he has nice points.

This guy doesn't sound too focused.

He says performance, keyboard and trackpad are crappy? And the battery? And he heard a rumor of a 32 GB machine that he must have?

He absolutely did the right thing in returning it.

The trackpad (everything he said about the trackpad in the video applies to me, even though I am a very good typist) and the keyboard are the biggest downsides for me about the 2016 model, but there's no way those are going to change, so for me, there'd be no point in waiting. The physical design of the computer will most likely remain the same for the next few years. So unless you need Kaby Lake or possibly 32 GB RAM (though no guarantee this is coming), I would get the 2016 model.

Keep in mind that when Apple adopted the chicklet-style keyboard, a LOT of people complained and they forever lost a segment of the market.

The evolution of this design is obviously something that Apple believes in, so I don't see them changing. Apple looks to please a majority, just like most large companies.

They also understand that they need "NEW" market and older users seeking a user experience that's intolerant of design changes are not really all that important. I recently posted a poll and the results were very PRO for the new design. Given the fact that these forums attract a lot of complaints, I'd venture that the new design is a big success. With that we can expect to continue the evolution. Who knows; maybe the next keyboard will be too radically different for me.

That's always a possibility. I saw a patent that Apple filed for a Taptic keyboard. I am not sure I could get behind that, but guessing there is an audience out there who would love that design.

For now, I much prefer the 2016 keyboard to previous iterations. I will keep an open mind about a Taptic keyboard, IF and when it ever arrives :)
