I think Apple should put in a toggle that, if enabled, would allow users to have as many permissions as an Android device would allow. .

Never happen. No matter how many folks say they should, must etc.

Best we might get is Apple vetted and approved themes available only via the App Store or something similar and perhaps a few plug in type functional add ons

No no no no. We really need people that want their tech to be simple. iOS is simple and it needs to stay that way. I don't want windows, I don't want stupid widgets, and I don't want to root, mod, or tap/bump phones. All I want is to hit a button touch a icon and open my app.

I hope its sarcasm! :) Customization would be just optional, if you want to change icons/gestures/etc., then please go ahead but if you want to keep it iBoring (Sugar & Spice and everything nice) you are welcome to do so too.

Yay and amen. No widgets! This ain't Microsoft or Acer, y'all.

No it would't be optional because it will be on the phone. Just let it be simple and easy. Stop with the want of customization.

I think Apple should put in a toggle that, if enabled, would allow users to have as many permissions as an Android device would allow. Apple can protect their name by making sure the user acknowledges that neither Apple nor anyone affiliated with Apple are responsible for any damage done as a result of any unapproved modification of or addition to the installed software.

Maybe Apple could then track all unapproved modifications and additions to determine what changes to make to the next version of iOS. So if 60% of nerds with iOS devices like 70's-style keyboards, then in the next major update, Apple will allow users who aren't nerds to change the style of their keyboards.

Without going all out and offering themes really they could first fix the icons and then maybe offer a dark mode a light mode like in Ibooks for the reader.

No toggles no customization. The only place to get apps should be from iTunes or my computer. I don't want viruses or shoddy software. I enjoy my apple user experience to much. If I wanted customization I would go android.
Are you actually implying that there are no dud apps in the iTunes App Store? Really? Who supplies your mushrooms? :D

Then its easy. Buy an android. Adding all this nonsense makes the phones laggy and normal people will not buy it. A majority of the people who buy apple products don't want the useless bells and whistles. Why do you think the iPhone is so popular? Its because its simple and just works.

I don't understand arguments like these. No one talks about depriving you of simple OS that's easy, fast and just works, has moderated AppStore without viruses, and carefully designed user experience. But what would be bad about having some hidden switch for other people, that you won't even know about if you aren't a nerd, which allows better customization and control in iOS?

For example, I am studying physics and use calculator often. But Apple's default calculator (even in scientific mode) is just a useless toy for my needs. So I'd like to customize iOS 7 control center and change calculator button to run a better calculator instead of default one. How it could be bad if I had an ability to tweak my own iPhone a little bit to make it more useful personally for me without affecting anything about you and your iOS experience at all?

No because that little hidden switch opens the doors for all kinds of viruses and manipulation of the user experience. Apple has a reason for keeping it simple. If you want to customize then jailbreak and have fun.

YOUR iOS will continue to remain the same as if the switch weren't there. Possibility for viruses and user experience manipulation, etc, is opened only for nerds who actually know about this switch and turn it on and understand all the consequences. Why it would be a problem? It won't affect ANYTHING for you and for hundreds of millions of casual iOS users AT ALL. You won't even realize that switch is there, and you will still get your virus-free simple iOS, as designed by Apple. Just as you can ignore all the jailbreakers now and their world is completely separate from yours, it will be the same with "switch users", a completely separate world for people who want more customization. What would be bad about it?

Thats like saying adding a micro sd card slot won't make it a less secure platform if you don't use it. Hackers find ways and thats just what they need.

Apple will eventually cater to power users just as they have with Mavericks. Once iOS has the majority of features it's core demographic wants they'll expand to the power users.

However, they'll won't cater to customization as everyone in this thread is envisioning it. They care too much about how the UI looks down to the fonts. That hasn't happened on OS X and it won't happen on iOS.
