3G not built for iOS4
I was about to get my new iPhone4 anyway, so I went ahead and upgraded my iPhone 3G from 3.1.3 to 4.0. BIG MISTAKE. My 3G slowed to a very annoying crawl. Just waking up or opening ANY app was molasses-slow.
It was so irritating, after much research, I found LifeHacker's guide to reverting from 4.0 back to 3.1.3 (http://lifehacker.com/5572003/how-to-downgrade-your-iphone-3g-from-ios-4-to-ios-313). This procedure required several new time-consuming downloads (including Win .NET 4.0 to run the RecBoot utility on my WinXP PC), but it DID work. I was able to completely restore my iPhone 3G to the pre-4 condition.
Unless you are a near-expert PC or Mac professional, I suggest you answer "NO" and "Don't ask me again" for the 4.x update to the iPhone 3G. I'm surprised to see some folks write that it's OK on their 3G. Not mine.
P.S. I passed my older iPhone 3G to another user in my company to replace one she accidentally dumped in the lake. She's happy and we didn't have to buy another old phone ... and I didn't have to sell mine for cheap.
