Of all the places I've lived and visited I loved Northern California. The climate, nature, recreation, and agriculture (food) is just superb..

I've been to Northern Cali many a times, its lovely. But not my kind of place.

I could ride a motorcycle year 'round as well as shorts.

Indeed you can, but I could never ride my snow machines either ;) Even more fun

could dine in countless fine restaurants in SF and enjoy the Pacific, twenty minutes later I could be in the Redwoods, an hour later steelhead fishing (or head south to hunt pheasant or wild boar) or be walking the wineries. In the winter I could do the same things and in 3.5 - 4 hour drive be skiing in Tahoe.

Very lovely, and I've been all over Cali, however I'll still take being within 40 minutes drive of NYC any day, there is no substitute for New York City imo.

I did not like the crime, except for the job security, nor did I like cutthroat selfishness of many people, but that I suppose is a symptom of all fast paced competitive areas. When I retire, again, we plan to spend our days living between Tianjin, the Twin Cities, and San Francisco.

I personally will probably retire in a mixture of Wisconsin and Tallahassee once I age.

Cali is great for lots of things, but lots of things that I love doing, Snow machining, ice fishing, polar bear swimming, Hunting, have enough room to land my plane ( whnever I get around to buying one, budgeted about 50K for that ), wide open spaces, lots of great local farms. And All within an hour of Americans best City, NYC. I'll take it ;)

15th coldest game in NFL history today in GB. Once the schedule is set, they aren't going to change it. But I think they could consider the weather when deciding which games are to be played on what days. Perhaps they could delay the "point of no return" until a long range forecast was available.

There were no reports of problems at today's game during the broadcast. The only problem I had with it was that the wrong team won. :(

They cancelled schools in my area (Columbus, Ohio) for today and some for tomorrow already because it is cold.

This is just stupid. The roads are passable and short of being cold there is nothing wrong. The part I find funny... they are worried about the kids getting frostbite and the like but those same kids, with there day off because of the cold, are going to spend some of it playing in the snow, outside, in that "to cold to go to school" weather. It seems like the school is saying, "Its to cold for your kids to be outside so we are going to cancel school and take the decision and parenting out of your hands". I just don't comprehend or understand this mindset and thought process...

When it is like this and I was a kid I was expected to go out and shovel, plow and/or snow blow the driveway and sidewalks so my parents could get into the driveway when they got home from work. I never froze to death doing that stuff, I put on an extra pair of long underwear and socks and had at it.

Ah, so you're not a lawyer. Well, neither am I, but I surmise that part of the decision has to be that the school districts want the responsibility for the safety of the children in these extreme weather situations to be on the parents, not them. However, I believe that your assumption is at least partially flawed. If school was held, there would be far more kids out in the cold than if it gets canceled. As that number goes up, the probability of more kids being outside and not dressed properly for the cold goes up. And, of the kids who do go outside since there is no school, the probability is high that many, most or all of them will be properly attired. But, having said that, if the school district decided not to close, the parents could still exercise their judgment and make their kids stay home. Perhaps the parents know that their kids do not have the proper clothing for the cold, and thus deem it unsafe to let them go outside.

P.S. At the football game in GB, they passed out free hand warmers, and provided free hot chocolate and coffee to the fans.

I suspect this has a lot to do with cubical suburban parents and lawyers looking for a payday.

Yeah, but one other thought: We are talking about children here who are, by definition immature. Just because Mom says don't take off your gloves, boots or scarf, and don't play in the snow doesn't mean they won't. Plus, sadly, too many kids have incompetent parents, some of whom are quite young and immature themselves, and perhaps won't think to warn the kids about the very cold temperatures and how to handle it. The school districts have to pay heed to the lowest common denominator.
