Do you need to sign a contract to buy an iPod Touch? When a device like this is bought for children aged 6-14, it's going to be better to make it something where a contract isn't required. If you have 2 kids, then 2x32GB iPod Touches is better than 1x16GB iPhone bought contract free.

Yes but most people in the US buy subsidized phones with contracts anyway. A data plan starts at $15 and becoming more and more of a necessity.

I'm sure the user base of iPod touches don't only consist of children too small to have a cell phone (which I would guess is under 10).

ok - then how about all those people already in contracts who don't want to spend on the iPhone vs an iPod touch. The ones with different phones. Maybe they like a small/low featured phone they can abuse but want to enjoy everything the iPod Touch can offer. Or those with another carrier.

The data plan is hardly a necessity if you're always on wifi. So for people in anyone of the scenarios above this could apply.

It's disarming to say the least to read such egocentric views on here time and time again. Guess what - your use case isn't the only one that exists. There could be hundreds of reasons people don't want an iPhone but would buy an iPod Touch.

People where AT&T coverage is poor.

People with CDMA only providers (Verizon/Sprint) and have figured out that the Media functionality on their Android or Blackberry handsets is poor.

Those two are very US centric. Also, I couldn't tell you how many people I've seen in NY with a Blackberry Bold or Curve and an iPod Touch.

People who don't like phones and wish there was an iPod Touch with 3G but will probably get a mifi to put their 3G card in anyway (that's me...)

So I went to the apple store today to pick up the new nano...

I had to check out the new touch, it's pretty nice with updated features..

I loooooove my iPad but when I saw the touch I got a bit jealous..

Anyone feel the same?

NO!!!

Try reading a book without having to zoom in and scroll after every paragraph.

A data plan is a necessity if you live in the US. at&t requires it and it says that if they find out you have an iPhone without a data plan, that they will add it on.

We were talking iPod Touch - not phone. You'll need to back track via the quotes to follow the conversation

Sorry. You were replying to someone who said that data plans were required on subsidized phones and it seemed like you were disagreeing with that.

I was disagreeing that people need an iPhone vs and iPod. The poster was implying that the iPod Touch really has no place in the marketplace. So there are a few reasons I find that wrong.

Its more a case of should you get the 13" or 17" MacBook Pro. They are the same product, with the same purposes, one is just larger.

It would be like comparing an iMac to MBP

It isnt the same but a different size.. its VERY different.

One is a phone and one is not. When you are buying a phone.. having a product that IS a phone is usually a big issue.

Using an analogy of iMac to MBP is more accurate because they both are computers, but the uses can be vastly different.

Well 70% of what I use my iPad for is for Web Browsing, having a screen that size is therefore important to me. If I wanted the features of the iPod Touch, i'll stick with my iPhone 4.

Nope. My iPad is used ever day as my main device for accessing the internet, email, etc. I can't ever envisage a time when i would think that doing all of that on the 3" screen of an iPod Touch would be a good idea.

Couple of specific problems with the iPod Touch i have which to me make it pointless:
- it's small, so you can use it on the go and carry it everywhere - but since it doesn't have a 3G connection, you can only really use it at your "destination" and only if there happens to be a wifi hotspot you can use. On-the-go use would only be music, maybe a tiny video on the train / plane, but for that you might as well have had one of the old Nanos.
- if the camera is to be of any value to me, it needs to be good quality. The camera in the iPod Touch is not, so eould never be used.
- if i was ever going to do video calling (ie Facetime) - which i won't - but if i did i'd only ever do it from home, in which case i might as well use a laptop / desktop / something connected to a large TV so i can actually see the person i'm talking to, rather than on a 3" screen

So, to recap: nope, not at all interested in iPod Touch, i'll keep my iPad thanks very much!

Except we are discussing the Touch and the iPad. The iMac isn't a portable device which means it is not comparable to the MBP. Since you can get an iPad without them lets leave GPS and 3G out of this, what can the iPad do that the iPad touch can't that isn't a result of the larger screen? I consider loading full websites a result of the ipad's larger screen. There are the iWork apps, but being able to run them is a result of the larger screen not because the iPad is fundamentally different.

When I say the iPad is a large iPod Touch, this isn't a criticism any more than saying a large TV is bad because its bigger than a small TV. The fact the the iPad is a large iTouch is one of the main reasons to get the iPad.

So how is the iPad VERY different from the iPod touch?

Minimizing the differences really is only trivializing the effect of what appears to be a minor difference (in size).

- More complex interfaces (The screen size, even though the iPod Touch 4g has a retina display, allows for interface elements that are much easier to hit with your fingers)
- It allows for touch typing on a near full-sized keyboard
- NOT LEAVING 3G or GPS aside it has the OPTION of 3G AND GPS (This allows for online map storage and more precise interaction with location services, 3G allows for online data access when available)
- Screen size for watching videos or review/editing of images (an iPod Touch even with the new higher resolution displays are not the same as holding the iPad screen to watch/edit/review images and video).

The difference is not nearly as great now that the iPod Touch was updated and improved. It could be argued the added gyroscope and camera really does push the Touch to be a 'better device'. I fully expect the updated iPad to include a gyroscope and 'hope' it also includes the video camera. I can see Apple leaving it out as a product differentiation, and it may prove difficult to use with the larger device, but I'd still like to see it included.

And to end well, its not worth getting worked up over the differences. Jealously leads to anger... anger leads to hate... hate leads to fear... There's nothing to fear here, just get what you want/need at the time for what's available -- at the time. Its a bummer when 3 weeks later something better suited for your needs comes out, but that's just the way it will be with technology.

The market for an iPhone may be more affected by the iPod Touch, now that people can have most of the features of the phone without dealing with AT&T. It would be awesome to have an app where the iPod Touch bluetooth and accept the phone calls from your 'regular cell phone' as if it were a 'car bluetooth adapter'. Then you can have all the features of the phone while not being 'tethered' to AT&T. I'm not sure if the API is available to do that, but some developer capable of it would likely do well in selling such an app.

I see an iPhone4 and iPad complimenting each other better than an iPod Touch and iPhone4.

Yes!! I was disappointed in the iPod touch, and decided not to get one seeing as I'm finally getting a smartphone in a few months. Because of this I was thinking about getting an iPad. Then I thought about it:

16gb iPad vs 32gb iPod touch

$200 more for:

Bigger screen
Bigger battery
1/2 the memory
Same RAM
Same base processor
Less ppi screen
No cameras (vs TWO for iPod, meaning no facetime either)

Is it just me or does the iPad seem overpriced now? You're essentially paying $200 more for a bigger, but lower quality screen and half the storage!! That being said, I'm still considering picking one up

iPad has an IPS panel, no? If it does, then it is superior in every aspect to me than a TN panel or whatever cheap retina display in the iPad Touch.

Let's compare two products, one of which is 1st generation, and the other is fourth generation. You can't compare the products, especially when one came out later.

It's like comparing a plain MacBook to a 13" MacBook Pro. Even better example is a similarly spec'd PC versus Mac. You won't get a performance increase in the Mac, but you will get a few better things and if that is what matters to you then so be it.

Ips panel superior in every way? Maybe, but not in any real world, big deal ways..

4th generation vs 1st generation Isnt a valid argument, especially when the iPad had been touted by Jobs as taking everything Apple has learned from the iPhone and iPod touch and improving upon it.

I'm not talking about your subjective values of these products, I'm just saying that the iPad is more money for less, monetarily and technologically.

The Ipad is not just a big Ipod touch

First off, I think the OP is just a troll. After reading his earlier posts, and threads that he/she has started, it is obvious that he/she isnt here to do anything but stir the waters.
Secondly, I have an ipad and Iphone 4. I could never be jealous of a touch.
Most importantly, Why do people compare two such different devices? The ipod touch is a toy. It is meant to take on the PSP, and the PSPGO, not the ipad. The Touch is small and the screen is beautiful, but it is no luxury to look up something on the web on that small screen. IT is hard to write a paper or a letter on of any length or substance. The fact of the small real estate on the touch also makes it a hinderance when reading. If your going to talk about them being technolologically different, the touch has better graphics because of a screen that will probably never be on an ipad.
All of the above being said. I love my ipad. I use it everyday. I write on it with the onscreen keyboard. I am up to 30+ words a minute, not blazing, but fast enough for my purposes. I also have the bluetooth keyboard, which I use when writing something more substantive then a macrumors rebuke and review. I see alot of people say that the ipad is not for creativity, but I use it for that too. Not only do I write on my ipad, but I use it to read music. I use it to download new music. I draw on it, michelangelo, I am not. I can edit pictures on it. Although the technology may be their to do all of these things on the touch, what good would it do you? The screen is too small to want to work on these things on it.
So the answer to your question is I could never be jealous of a touch, It would never even occur to me to even look at it. It is a toy, my ipad is a tool. And my opinion of the OP, is that he is tool too!

I would be jealous of the iPod Touch if it had a 9 inch screen or something. Otherwise, all the reasons, screens, and applications I use an iPad exclusively for don't apply to the Touch.

Then again. Whatever you buy, there will be improvements later on. I can look at some of this as stuff we can expect to see in the new iPad, when that releases. I'm pretty sure Apple has every intention to make their entire touch-device series (iPod Touch and Bigger) have Facetime. All which means multi-tasking with video-conferencing intact.

Of course, I'm already psyched for the 4.2 release just so I can use something like Skype while using my other apps.

Don't mean to start a fight or anything, but I think the original question assumes you don't have an iPhone or even smartphone. If you've got an iPhone, it's not even an issue..

Not jealous of the iPod Touch at all. In fact it helped me make my final decision to buy an iPad. To me it was never about the screen resolution as much the screen size. I just find 3.5" too claustrophobic and I feel more comfortable using an iPad as a day planner/organizer/productivity tool/web browser/email center. It just feels more natural to me. I may have preferred a 7" iPod/iPad but the 10" is what I'm now getting until a slightly more portable version comes out.

I haven't read any replies..

But: The iTouch is just the item that a parent buys their kids for christmas when they can't think of anything else.. That's why Apple goes hot in their stocks over christmas time..

The iTouch sucks compared to my 3G iPad IMO. Granted, it may have a retina display, but the iPad has a display nearly 3x as big in the first place

Just got an iPod touch 4, and no, it's not going to replace my iPad. Only use I have for it is to listen to music in situations where the iPad is too big and awkward to carry. I also use the Touch to read books and saved articles in a pinch, but I much prefer using the iPad, because the bigger screen makes it so much more comfortable to read on it. The retina display means that I can now use one font size smaller on the Touch, but there's still only so much you can fit in that small screen. And web browsing on the Touch is impossible now that I've got used to doing it on the iPad, and I haven't even tried to play videos on the Touch -- the screen is so TINY, what's the point of even trying?
