With all this TALK about 4G, one has to factor in possible confusion in the marketplace between 4G meaning the next cellular radio standard and 4G meaning the 4th generation iPhone which may or may not have 4G wireless.

You can never be up to date with technology.

:p

Truth. Buy what you need and can afford today, cause something better will always come out. I was looking at my very first mobile phone yesterday - a Nokia nk402. At the time I thought it was the best thing since time began :D

1. 5MP Camera
2. Multi Core CPU
3. More Memory
4. 64GB
5. N WIFI Chipset
6. HSDPA+ Support (for other countries)

All the above if and only if another company releases a phone with these features and provides competition. The pre did that somewhat this year and in response apple put in just enough changes to match it. Fact of the matter, 3.0 (software) was more rewarding than the 3GS (hardware). If no competition comes along next year I wouldn't expect the 4G to even have a new shell.

The Pre's camera sucks took my 3G and did shots at the store, the 3g was not running 3.0 it took much better pics:)

If you're concerned with the latest/greatest, then the best time to buy is at launch.

I'll worry about 4G when it's actually available in my area. I have a feeling it will be at least two iPhones away. And even then, somewhere in there we'll have the 7.2 3G with more robust backend. If they could just get 3G working to its capability that would be fine by me.

Why not next July? Because the 3G was in July. the 3GS in June. The OGiPhone was in June? (me thinks)

Does it matter? Seriously; we are ~1 year away from another launch. It will always be like this. Maybe in the future it will slow down a bit, but generally speaking, we are always looking at a year.

Think of it this way:
Personally, I bought a 16GB 3G and the Applecare warranty to go with it last September. A week ago, I upgraded to the 32GB 3GS. I sold my old iPhone on eBay for $360... which was the price I paid for the 3G + warranty. I plan on buying the warranty for my 32GB 3GS in the future. Next year, when the LTE iPhone arrives, I will sell my 3GS for ~$360. No big deal.
