yeah totally skip any phone with notch, pill, island..whatever distracting is in the way of a full screen video watching experience. Camera/sensor embedded in the full bezel was better than this devoluted design.

I use the iPhone as a phone so the satellite connectivity matters to me and I will update which I tend to do 2 yearly as the battery starts to degrade. Do not care about cameras, case colors, how fast angry birds loads etc. Also cannot wait for fantasy island to disappear. Dreading the VZW upgrade as my previous ESIM upgrades on VZW have been very bad experiences as the ESIM product was not designed for Primary by their IT folks.

Man, I wonder when the next wholesale chassis design change will happen for this phone? It’s about time, isn’t it?

While we can’t know that any of these changes will make it to the iPhone 15, several of them are likely based on leaked information and on what Apple and other vendors have already done.

As you mentioned, USB-C is a good bet, though Apple could still decide to go with some variation of MagSafe only.

Migrating the Dynamic Island and the pill to the non-pro models seems very likely. Apple is obviously pleased with how it turned out and makes things simpler to bring this to all models. It only takes expanding production of that screen to extend this to the non-pro phones, not any technological breakthrough.

The size of the camera lenses are an obvious problem for a mobile device and limit what Apple can do to improve the camera, which they have shown to be a major selling point. Periscope cameras are a reasonable way around that problem and other manufacturers, like Samsung, have already implemented periscope cameras. Having Apple do so is not a stretch.

We know that TSMC is building out their production capacity for 3nm so it would be expected that Apple will use that for next year’s SOC.

Only the under-screen TouchID seems like a stretch. We have heard reports that Apple is exploring that but it is not clear if they have gotten it to work well enough to be both secure enough and satisfactory to use. It may come in the 15 or it may have to wait for a later model, or Apple may decide that FaceID is enough. I’m sure that we’ll see more rumors around this, especially if this really is a screen feature. Ross Young seems to get a lot of detail from screen manufacturers.

I think the main open question is whether these changes happen in the 15 or end up in later models.

[edit: fixed weird case where concluding text jumped to the middle of the post.]

Under-screen fingerprint sensors are a commodity at this point. Tons of phones do it. I personally don’t think we will ever see it, as Apple decided Face ID is good enough many years ago. They said exactly that when Face ID debuted on phones without Touch ID - they basically said, we just think Face ID is better. For the most part, I agree. That said, I wouldn’t mind a Touch ID returning, simply for the redundancy (and I really would have liked it in 2020), but I doubt Apple is going to put in that part if people don’t use it en masse, so it wouldn’t surprise me if Apple never goes back.

I have to say the regular non-Pro iPhone 14 lineup is the most underwhelming I have seen Apple release in, well, maybe ever. At least with the old “S” phones, we got materially faster phones in the same case. Not here. It’s the same phone. A lot of the “changes” seem software driven more than anything. Maybe some more RAM that most users aren’t going to care about (people who care about RAM get Pros)? Now, it might be because of overall supply chain and economic issues, I get it. But yea, I do expect them to actually make the iPhone 15 a meaningful upgrade.

While this was not a huge upgrade, it did have some notable upgrades (always on display, dynamic island, satellite sos). Before this we had the 6, 6s, 7, 8 series that were virtually indistinguishable from each other and the main upgrades were just faster SOCs.

Ordered the 14 Pro Max because it was time and I will happily trade it in for a phone with Thunderbolt (not just USB-C) in a year, which is way overdue. What good are these video features and TB storage if you can't move giant files in less than a freaking day?? “Lightning” should be called “Molasses.”

I have a 13 Pro Max and traded in an iPhone 11 Pro Max. I will wait until November for the Black Friday deals. Right now if I trade in it will cost about $350. I don’t think that is a bad price but closer to $200 and I might just do it.

Really like that purple color. It would match my iPad Air in purple! Lol

In 2023, it will be 10 years since the launch of the popular iPhone 5s, and five years since Apple revealed the first large full-screen iPhone design with the iPhone XS Max. 2023's presumably-titled "iPhone 15" lineup is currently rumored to feature:

  • USB-C port
  • "Pill" display cutout in place of the notch on the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus
  • Under-display Touch ID fingerprint scanner
  • A17 chip, manufactured using a 3nm fabrication process
  • Periscopic telephoto camera, likely exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro Max
The only thing that will get me to upgrade my 12 Pro ... USB-C

Great write up! USB-C is the most important upgrade for me. I can't wait to until everything is on one standard.
Funny thing. USBC isn’t one standard. There are actually differing standards (sub standards?) of it. Not all chargers will charge USBC devices (taking away the obvious ones like laptops need more power to charge). However I expect Apple to be ok … Right?

True. But looking forward to one cable size. Hopefully adapters and cables improve so they can negotiate charging wattage with all or most devices.

For power delivery, pretty much any USB-C charger and cable will work. Nintendo did create a non-compliant USB-C for one of their devices but otherwise power delivery is the lowest common denominator for USB-C. It does get more complicated when you get to data and data speeds but that’s not relevant to charging.

I know this may be weird but I only get my iPhones in even numbers lol. I had the 12 Pro Max and now I have the 14 Pro Max, so I will be waiting for the 16

Not so weird. I used to get the S versions of early iPhones because they were the fully realized versions of each generation.

Under display Touch ID. This gets trotted out at every rumour cycle, touch ID on iPhones is dead. Face ID only.
I don't think that those usually well sourced leakers made it up, but that it was a decision based on Covid.

When Covid started, Apple might have started working to include TouchID, but realized that they could make FaceID work with masks and speculated that Covid might be over soon anyway.

Obviously the over soon part didn't quite work out, but with the overwhelming majority of countries stopping mask mandates, reintroducing TouchID just became a non-priority.

I hope they ditch the stainless steel soon. It's my main reason for still not buying a pro model.

Touch ID would be the next big pull for me.
