I just want 5 little buttons not all the crap HP adds. the 6 buttons are Pause/play, Next, back, Volume up, volume down, and mute. Those are really the only buttons I want extra and they could easily be added to a laptop and not junk it up.

Well that only really 3 buttons, and I think the things those buttons would do and worth looking at iTunes/Dashboard, and not filling up keyboard space

I have a Logitech multimedia keyboard and mouse set that have dedicated buttons for next/previous track as well as pause and play buttons. Below is a picture of the set I have. Once you install the logitech software, you can custimize the keys how you wish.

I personally use the forward/previous buttons all the time, there are great when I am not in iTunes, I don't have to bring it to the front.

I think this is one of those things that Apple won't ever implement and just let 3rd part companies like Logitech great the "specialty" keyboards.

i think that's the best idea. if apple made itunes controls on the keyboards themselves, i think it would create a perception that apple was biased towards music fans, and that they were higher priority than a non-music person. right now, the apple keyboard is non-biased towards different tastes, which i like it to remain. simplistic and minimalist.

but perhaps there's an app writer than can make the itunes controls easily managed. and aren't there itunes shortcuts anyway?

I want it mostly for the laptop have those extra keys. for the desktop keyboard and mouse I could char less because they are the first thing from any new desktop that get tossed in the spare parts box and I use my own.
But for laptops it a lot harder to always use a desktop keyboard and mouse.

not everyone plays itunes music all the time, so for many people, it would be annoying just to satisfy the few music heads.

But....but....but....

Well from what I've read, Steve Jobs himself is somewhat of an audiophile.

On top of that:

I don't really think this would be a big deal. Grab the last few function keys, that aren't mapped to anything (3 would be fine), and map the middle one to |> ||, the right one to |>|> and the left one to <|<|. Seriously. Minimalistic design, doesn't look like crap, and usable. Make'em look just like the Volume keys, replace the current keyboards with them, no price change.

That should make up for the crappy stevenote a little.

those function keys are being used for expose and the such. and besides, even if steve is an audiophile, i would say your average user isn't listening to music 24/7, so i don't think the idea is mainstream enough.

I agree with the others who said that it should be a separate accessory. It would go over real well with the Mac Mini crowd, since it is a media device really. Just not on laptops. well, maybe at the top, but they must be touch sensitive and not backlit.

I use QuickSilver as my hotkeys.

Ctrl+Option+Right Arrow = Next track
Ctrl+Option+Left Arrow = Previous Track
Ctrl+Option+Space bar = Play/pause.

I would rather have separate volume control for different programs. When listening to iTunes I would like to be able to turn down the sound on other programs.

I'll put in another vote for Sizzling Keys. I use F1 for previous song, F2 for play/pause, F3 for next song, and F4 for displaying the current song's info in a floating window. Seems easy enough.
