I don't understand. I thought these were severely constrained.

Even with the quiet launch, I expected the word to spread around and everyone to rush online to order one and the shipping dates to skyrocket... but it seems like shipping is still 1-3 days.

Local Best Buy's where I live still have some in stock too.

Am I just looking at this too early and that by the time December comes, there really will be none for those who wanted one for Christmas?

heh heh, Air was available in 33 countries (??) in the first day. But Ipad mini R is only available in 10 or so countries now.. Of course, there is enough stock of Ipad mini r for now.. The question is when will Apple launch Ipad mini R for the rest of the world...

A measured roll out through online ordering, small stock sendouts to brick and mortar stores and at least the general aura that a device with limited supply is still realistically available.

This is a perfect explanation. The only question I have, why did they not do this for iPhone 5s? I'm sure many who went in line did not get what they want and came away disappointed.

Probably because it's a phone and their capacity wasn't as limited. Get the order in because people are generally willing to wait a bit more to get a phone, which they know they're going to live and die with for two years. iPhone is iPhone, the iPad is a much fiercer market where iPad is truly a premium brand and if people feel like its impossible to spend their $500 they'll just be content to spend $250 on a comparable device.

For phones, the pricing on premium phones is close enough that I think most people are of the mindset that for the same price I'll get exactly what I want even if it means waiting a few weeks. Tablets are a different story, if Johnny can't wait for an iPad after Xmas, most people will just buy the replacement kindle or nexus.

16 GB black Wi-Fi. This allows me to buy the most iPad minis for my money; it also allows me to charge a higher mark-up without the price scaring people away and going into the 1000's, like it would if I were to buy 128 GB ones.

As the base model, 16 GB is also the likely model that parents buying presents for their kids will want, as well as people who can't get one anywhere else and are willing to settle.

I will buy some of the white ones too, though. Those are popular.

Could have been a risky move as that model seems to be plentiful of all the models. They have the shortest lead time and in stock everywhere around me at least, TX.

you buy 10 retina minis at 399 each and sell for 499 to desperate people. thats a 1k profit you may or may not get. you stood in line for about half a day. you spend another 3 weeks until christmas selling them.

all in all yes its a quick way to make a grand. its also headache, non stop nigerian paypal scams, and many other things that are not worth it. i tried to do it with the air and made like 20 bucks. yay i covered my gas milage LMAO. i saw an entire line of asians lined up to buy iPhone 5s, no doubt selling them marked up on ebay or back to their countries. and i wanted to do the same until i saw what a pain it was and if i just worked normally i would make more

I also got several 16GB in gray and silver. And a couple 32's. figured the 16's would be most desirable and affordable as well for gifts

Supply is constrained, but I really expected it to be much worse than this. I'm surprised at the shipping dates.

I haven't seen any indications of a shortage. I walked into the Tampa store and they had a mountain of them for sale. I ordered one online using my phone and walked out of the store 30 minutes later with my new miniR.

Other than wasting 30 minutes of my time, availability seemed no different than any other product.

Florida seems to have a relative abundance according to here: http://www.seaturtle.org/idevice/ipad_mini_grid.shtml

Still lots more red than green across the US. Much better this morning than yesterday, though no telling how deep the stock levels are.

Why do you fl this is risky? Couldn't he just return them if nothing else?

I have to agree with you in part: I have no intention of reselling these online through eBay, for all the reasons you mentioned: shipping costs, taxes, waiting for delivery to them, it's not worth any amount of money. I've already gone through that phase with Kindles and have no desire to repeat it.

The iPad minis that I bought will only be sold locally and I will not be driving to anyone's house to deliver them, they'll have to meet me downtown where I work, which is generally not a problem for anyone as it is a convenient location to meet up. We have a pretty vibrant market for Kijiji in our city, so selling them will not require more effort than posting the ad online.

I may not make that much profit, but the opportunity was too obvious for me to resist. If there is going to be a mass shortage, then the payoff may be very good. If there's no shortage, I should have no problem selling them at cost. There's something about taking the risk and finding out that's fun for me, like a game. I may win big, I may not win, but either way I'll learn something about buying and selling.

and that really is the heart of entrepreneurship, albeit in an area that some look down upon.

Those models tend to be the most popular and exist at a selling point that, even marked up, people would be more likely to purchase. However, Apple recognizes that those models are the most popular and have stated that they're producing those ones in the highest quantity. If you're trying to resell and mark up based on scarcity, it was a risky move to go with a line that Apple is producing in the greatest amounts.

In terms of making and spending money, he doesn't come out clean even if he makes a return. He has to spend the fuel or energy to return the iPads, if that's what it comes down to. While we often undervalue our personal time, the return does cost him there, too. People may not recognize it, but his money is now tied up in the iPads. He can return them and get his money back, but that money could be earning interest in a bank account or on the stock market.

This was a gamble, albeit one with extremely low risk.

True, good point with time and possible money earning interest depending on timing and method of purchase.

I managed to get a walk in reservation of a 32GB cellular here in the UK on launch day.

I then returned it and got a white wifi. Now I want a white cellular and there isn't any stock as far as I can see for store collection but the beauty is I can check online everyday so no wasted trips. When it's available I'll go get it and if 14 days pass then ill refund it and order online.

Maybe Steve Jobs was right and the ideal size is 9.7".

I think it's very possible that the "small tablet" is more of a fad that reached success due to the lower pricepoint ($170 less than fullsize) and the need for a secondary travel device to go along with a smaller phone. But with competing phones more getting bigger (and the iPhone soon to follow) then maybe the people are starting to feel that a secondary "small tablet" isn't as important as it used to be and now a large phone (for daily) + large tablet (for home/travel) combo is more ideal.

(BTW. I got my Retina Mini on day one with no problem. As pretty as the retina screen is, I'm preferring the larger Air just because I dont actually take my iPad out much and i find it to be more comfortable on the eyes)
