I don't understand. I thought these were severely constrained.
Even with the quiet launch, I expected the word to spread around and everyone to rush online to order one and the shipping dates to skyrocket... but it seems like shipping is still 1-3 days.
Local Best Buy's where I live still have some in stock too.
Am I just looking at this too early and that by the time December comes, there really will be none for those who wanted one for Christmas?
A measured roll out through online ordering, small stock sendouts to brick and mortar stores and at least the general aura that a device with limited supply is still realistically available.
16 GB black Wi-Fi. This allows me to buy the most iPad minis for my money; it also allows me to charge a higher mark-up without the price scaring people away and going into the 1000's, like it would if I were to buy 128 GB ones.
As the base model, 16 GB is also the likely model that parents buying presents for their kids will want, as well as people who can't get one anywhere else and are willing to settle.
I will buy some of the white ones too, though. Those are popular.

I haven't seen any indications of a shortage. I walked into the Tampa store and they had a mountain of them for sale.[...] Other than wasting 30 minutes of my time, availability seemed no different than any other product.
Could have been a risky move as that model seems to be plentiful of all the models. They have the shortest lead time and in stock everywhere around me at least, TX.
you buy 10 retina minis at 399 each and sell for 499 to desperate people. thats a 1k profit you may or may not get. you stood in line for about half a day. you spend another 3 weeks until christmas selling them.
all in all yes its a quick way to make a grand. its also headache, non stop nigerian paypal scams, and many other things that are not worth it. i tried to do it with the air and made like 20 bucks. yay i covered my gas milage LMAO. i saw an entire line of asians lined up to buy iPhone 5s, no doubt selling them marked up on ebay or back to their countries. and i wanted to do the same until i saw what a pain it was and if i just worked normally i would make more
If there is going to be a mass shortage, then the payoff may be very good. If there's no shortage, I should have no problem selling them at cost. There's something about taking the risk and finding out that's fun for me, like a game. I may win big, I may not win, but either way I'll learn something about buying and selling.
Those models tend to be the most popular and exist at a selling point that, even marked up, people would be more likely to purchase. However, Apple recognizes that those models are the most popular and have stated that they're producing those ones in the highest quantity. If you're trying to resell and mark up based on scarcity, it was a risky move to go with a line that Apple is producing in the greatest amounts. Why do you fl this is risky? Couldn't he just return them if nothing else?

In terms of making and spending money, he doesn't come out clean even if he makes a return. He has to spend the fuel or energy to return the iPads, if that's what it comes down to. While we often undervalue our personal time, the return does cost him there, too. People may not recognize it, but his money is now tied up in the iPads. He can return them and get his money back, but that money could be earning interest in a bank account or on the stock market.
This was a gamble, albeit one with extremely low risk.
