I have a solution!

Not trolling here mods, this is super serial business.

Solution: Keep track of your phone and don't let it get stolen.

For real, mine is always in my pocket. I don't understand how it's so easy for people to get their phones stolen.

OP does have a good point though.

And if it still gets stolen--let's say someone puts a gun to your head or perhaps you take it out to take a call or check something and out of nowhere someone just runs by or even rides by on a bike or motorcycle and grabs it, as happens quite a bit--what then?

Agreed. This has been mentioned on this forum about a person riding by and snatched a phone from the user. It can happen

But a password to power off would stil be defeated by performing a hard reset on the device. So tracking it would still be moot.

Just read a story about three teens that cased a Starbucks for awhile and then gabbed a phone. It's gotta come out of your pocket at some point. If not then leave it at home and be invincible! :D

You should have to unlock the phone to power it down, then all you would need to do is turn off Control Center "Access on Lock Screen". Of course all of this does nothing when you can just eject the SIM. Needs a power ejector like a CD ROM drive.

BTW when your in the business of a "Life of Crime" you have all day to sit around and figure out ways to steal other peoples stuff so you don't have to get a real job.

Just jailbreak and you can require a password to power down. The iCaughtU app has that feature built into it. It will also take a photo and email it to you along with the current GPS coordinates if somebody types in the wrong password more than a set number of times.

A hard reset just reboots the phone, it doesn't shut it off.
All it will do is turn back on within a minute.

I off hand forget the timing, but you can get the phone to power off instead of rebooting with the hard reset.

That's assuming that both of those are tied together, and not that you can have one without the other. Perhaps someone would want to set up a power off password but not have one for accessing their phone (there are plenty of people who would likely fall into that category). Since they wouldn't power off the phone all that often (as most people don't) they can easily forget what they set up as the password for it. So, yeah, logic.

Why would someone put a pass code to turn off the device but not have one to unlock the device? A pass code to turn it off would be for preventing thieves from making it untraceable, but if you don't have a pass code to unlock then a thief can just unlock it & put it an airplane mode. That's not logic lol

Have you seen what are the most common passwords are online? We are talking about typical users here, logic doesn't get very far, if anywhere at all, unfortunately.

If this sort of thing happens so much in your (anyone's) neighborhood- perhaps it's time to move.

I've lived in many many different places and NOWHERE have I ever felt as if such a thing would happen to me.

Maybe I'm just never in a situation where it would be likely, unlike some unlucky people.

Whatevs. Enjoy the big city life, y'all! ;)

It's a big big world out there.

I think there should be password request for anything that effects cellular data and to turn the phone off.

Also perhaps make it so simcards are and actual mechanism that wont operate to eject without password. Damage extracting will just make the phone unsellable.

Also I want so when the phone is off the battery still runs the low level data signal for tracking and external wiping etc. maybe even remote turnoff that won't let phone work without a physical itunes plug in ( which charges it ha! ) an asks for password. Get wrong turns off again. ( but still charges unfil unplugged) so criminals unwittingly charge your device that is still signalling you of it's location for police.

And a mode that turns on hidden jetpack capability so that the phone flies back to where you are. ;)

How is that?
Try it and let us know if it powers off or reboots automaticly.

It's very easy to do. Just hold the power and home button and the second the screen turns black, just let go and the device is off now

You can try it. I can reproduce it very easily on my device

I could shoot a video for you if you don't believe me

Find my iPhone or ipad are gimmicks not to bounty hunt people who found it

Ferraris don't have the theft protection you people want for a 600$ phone
Yup, gimmicks that helped plenty of people find or even recover their phones.

As for Ferraris, how many of those don't have LoJack or something like OnStar that many much cheaper cars already have these days?

Really? Every time I did it seems like it just restarted.
Maybe my timing was off but I believe you bro. You know your stuff very well.
But probably the odds of any random person knowing how to do that are slim.
Almost everyone will just go for the power button and not know about the combination of those 2 buttons or the timing to make it stay off.
