What you are proposing is more like selling someone a ring, shipping the diamond first, and then the base later.

But then you artificially skew demand to what is available in the store, while if you had let people order what they wanted to, you might have gotten a vastly different and more optimal sales mix. Apple will have a much better idea with the next release what people want.

If they had done what a bunch of "crazies" on a forum suggested, something else would have gotten screwed up, and the "crazies" would have suggested that Apple should have simply sold complete packages.
LMAO! This is too funny. People are talking crazy now. :D They knew the watch was coming 6 months ago and should've prepared themselves if they wanted it right away. Apple even sent out emails telling people to favorite the configurations people wanted early so Apple could have some idea as to what people wanted once pre orders commenced. I'm not sure what else Apple could've done here. These people are grown adults but they are acting like children. :D

But imagine people not glued to the forums who could have possibly been shipped a watch face and not a band lol. They'd be like "wtf?"

I legit thought that apple was going to sell watch cases and bands separately.

Well that's a easy fix.

1. Don't allow them to checkout without having them type something like " I agree" to not receiving a band with a purchase.

2. Customer has to buy a band of its their first time ordering a phone with their Apple ID.

I agree 100%. I chose the Milanese with the blue leather band separate due to availability. I really want that blue leather loop though.

You guys are over thinking this. Manufacturer a boat load of black and white bands. Send them out with the ss or aluminum watch. And let ppl wait for the rest of the bands to come in. Boom. Done lol. This roll out is basically :apple: showing they didn't really think this through. And are learning as they go.

This reminds me of game consoles. Remember way back when the NES launched: you got the console, two controllers, and a game. It included everything you needed to start playing a two-player game on Christmas morning. Now game consoles launch without an extra controller or game. You can pre-order them at the same time but if one is delayed the first impression is not positive. Apple is getting a bit of this when chargers and cases arrive before the Watch or iPhone.

I'm happy to wait for my Space Grey 42mm Watch knowing that it'll have all of the pieces in the box. My shipment range is 5/13-5/27 so there's no need for me to be anything other than pleasantly surprised if it arrives before 5/27. After that, I'll start working through the complaint process.

I wouldn't call that easy. That would probably create more harm than our crazy forum impatient antics.

I think we're missing the point here. Demand is much higher than supply and we just don't know how to be patient when it comes to new apple products haha.

Exactly. I really thought that is what Apple would do -- sell the "base" watch with a black or white sports band, and all other bands would be an additional optional purchase. That way they would have a lot fewer SKUs, and producing and shipping them would be much simpler.

Exactly. See if we can think of this, they should have to lol.

Right. The line of reasoning that they should sell you a non-functioning watch is madness. That would never, ever happen.
Agreed. Plus Apple would then run the risk of cheap customers trying to go sans strap and carry the body around like a pocket watch, defeating 98% of its functionality.

Besides, choosing the body then the band based on availability is no different than what they did. The body/band combos available later than launch had different availability dates.

i think there are too many bands..should have only had a few stock bands then add it as an option...

How about this. Apple shipped all watches aside from the edition with a black sport band and additional bands were extra. Black is pretty unisex and would work for most. It allows apple to ship a complete product but still allow for add on sales of different bands. It would also add to the excitement of everyone. Initially you would be excited to get the watch and again when the band ships.

Yeah, do we really think Apple didnt consider this scenario? I would wager they considered it and with the consultation of insustry experts decided against it.

I have to agree here... Everyone gets a "sport band" with their choice of watch model and then order the bands as an accessory.

THIS MAKES SENSE.. They are marketing it as a FITNESS DEVICE as well as a fashion piece. Having a sport band for everyone makes sense in all aspects. I'm sure the cost of the sport band is minimal and it promotes the functionality of the product. Additional bands should be viewed like cases.. An accessory.

It's the same concept if apple didn't send you your iPhone until white bumpers were in stock. That would be rediculous.

We don't know what's causing delays. And at this point we don't even know how long the delay will be. Some people had 4-6 weeks estimate and now their status is preparing for shipping. Its obvious they're very proud of the different bands and having the bands be an optional purchase like an accessory next to iPhone cases wouldn't show off the bands very well. Plus I think they'd sell less of them as people would consider the Sport band good enough (i.e. Apple is selling me a watch and throwing a band in the box like they do with headphones). I'll bet most iPhone users use the headphones that come in the box and never upgrade to anything better. The same would happen with the watch.

I think it's way too early to be second guessing Apple's strategy.

But if everybody got a watch with a sport band how many would buy additional bands? How many iPhone users are using headphones other than the EarPods that come in the box? My guess is not many. I highly doubt Apple thinks of the milanese loop or link bracelet as an "accessory". To Apple the Watch + Band is the product. They're not going to stick a $449 link bracelet on the wall next to iPhone cases. If anything it's the much cheaper Sport band that could be considered an "accessory". Especially if they start to come out in many more colors.

This is very hard for me to judge, because I'm the exact other way around -- I never use the headphones that come with iPods / iPhones, and always use my own, more expensive ones. I ordered a sports watch, so my choice of bands were limited to sports bands, but I plan on buying one of the leather bands once things settle down and I can walk into a store to buy one.

On the one hand, I think you may be right, but on the other hand, people don't use headphones with their phones all the time, but a watch band is on you all day, from when you put it on in the morning to when you take it off at night. I think many people who are satisfied with the cheap headphones that come in the box with phones might not feel that way about watch bands.

In the end, I think many people are like the OP -- they plan to get a sports band and a nicer band. That's what I plan to do too, but unlike the OP, I had no choice of which band to order with the watch and which to buy as an additional accessory. So I avoided the shipment delay that happened to the OP. So now I'm happy that Apple only bundled sports bands with sports watches. It made my decision making process simpler, and avoided a potential source of dissatisfaction.
