I’ve had the 12 black for a year, without a case, and I never seen any shade of blue in it, no matter how dark. I’m typing on it right now. It’s just black, zero blue. Unless I got the only copy that came out pure black in which case I should probably sell it as a rarity
I also have one sitting right on front of me. Do you have an Apple TV remote? The old black glass style. Or even an earlier black iPhone. Compare the two. You'll see the difference.

Midnight is actually a really dark navy blue, whereas last year it was just plain black. Some of the YouTubers showed the blue colour quite carefully. Some have said that starlight is supposed to have a tinge of gold, I’m just trying to gauge how much…

if you can, please post some comparison photos!
Thanks
I must be crazy because the 13 if anything looks whiter than the 12. My partner can’t spot a difference.

I really wonder how Apple can call the white iPhone 13 and champagne like iPad mini 6 the same color. This is so confusing. People seeing the Mini 6 maybe think the iPhone 13 has a champagne look to it. People seeing the 13 may think the Mini 6 is just silver. To me this is an annoying move, sorry. I have seen those iPhone 13 comparisons to the 12 line. And the white seems much whiter than before when it had a red tone to it. Good for many. But why not call it silver/white. Why the same name for different colors? The only thing in common in some light it is somehow silverish and both are light colors.

@omglolbbq ... I agree, the 13 is much whiter and less of a warmer color. No reddish tone to it.

Thanks for those pictures. Looks like eggshell, and the antenna bands seem to be whiter than the back.

Cameras have so much automatic color corrections these days that the YouTube videos and review article photos are mostly useless for judging the exact color shades. Also for the regular 13 blue, the available videos and photos range from almost baby blue to teal or almost aquamarine.
Yeah, it’s really tough to show the accurate color with a picture. In person it doesn’t look egg shell. It’s definitely a shade of white. When not next to a totally white object (ie like the airpods case) it looks like a white back with a light champagne side band. I have it in the Apple clear case and really like it.

After using it over the weekend, the battery life seems good…not an issue for me. The one thing about the phone that truly stands out is the brightens. Coming from the iPhone 11 (600 nit max brightness), I really notice the 800 nit max brightness of the 13 Mini. I had trouble seeing my 11 outdoors in full sun. Not an issue at all with the Mini. A great upgrade for me!!

I wonder if that side band is similar to Apple's original "gold" aluminum color from the phones and watches. I absolutely loved the watch in that original gold - not a fan of the pinky gold they have now.

Starlight is so nice I’m thinking of getting the new watch in starlight to match my iPhone and iPad. That’s quite mental though so I might yet talk myself out of it.

Starlight is like the spiritual successor to the iPhone 5S gold, grown up and become a little less flashy.

To me, it the “light champagne“ colored band on the Starlight Mini looks like the case of the Starlight Apple Watch series 7. It’s a really nice touch of color!

I’m pretty mental then because I always get silver so it’ll all match. This year I ordered a pro, and the fact that it is stainless and not “matching” is probably gonna drive me mad. Thank goodness for cases. ;-p

Oh dang so no silver watch in the 7 series? Definitely can’t upgrade then.
I think Starlight is still silver but with a subtle hint of gold. So it would go with more jewelry. From afar, it looks like silver. :) :) :)
