Much better in what way? Please be more specific, thanks!

The Eizo SX3031 is better in the following ways:

Adjustments
Colour Gamut
Uniform backlight brightness
Black level
Better anit-glare coating giving sharper picture without being glossy.
HDCP for single link, can display Bluray/HD-DVD, PS3, Xbox 360 via HDMI-DVI adaptor.
Scaling for non native res with options of 1:1, Full Screen and scaled to fit screen whist maintaining aspect ratio by letterboxing.
2 inputs via DVI sockets, not captive cable like ACD.
Built in PSU, the ACD PSU was a pain with my MacBook Pro.
5 year warranty
Height adjustable stand, now I can get my centre channel speaker right underneath the screen, with the ACD I had the monitor on top of the speaker.

I am driving it from a 17inch Mac Book Pro.

The things the Eizo does not support are 1080i video, 1080p 24fps , the ACD does not do this either.

Update supports all progressive video resolutions (480p,576p,720p,1080p) at 50P and 59.94/60P

I'm definitely going to wait. I feel that the next ACD upgrade is going to blow everything else out of the water.

I should add my use is for Digital Cinema acquisition looking at 4K (4096x2302), 2K and 1080p images from all the various camera systems (RED, Genesis, D20, Dalsa, F23, F950, Viper).

The NEC 30" looked interesting as well.

What are the chances that the ACD will be updated OR see a price drop, within the next 2 weeks? I will be looking to buy a 30" ACD very soon, since the new NEC is taking forever to ship (and is also way more expensive).

Also, since I will be using my 17" MBP to power the ACD, is it possible to have different view options for folders and icons on each display when running them side-by-side?

If you can hold on a little longer, NAB is just around the corner. Last year, Apple dropped its display prices just before the event as well.

I'm in the market for the 30" as well but I can't justify spending $$$ on a panel which will be replaced shortly—most likely at WWDC (where it was introduced).

The ACD 30" is still about $600 over market. The Dell 3007WFP, which uses the same panel as the ACD, is about $1200 right now. The SWOP "certification" and Apple design is not worth the extra $600 imo. (I refuse to buy a Dell though—who have been know to play panel roulette with their displays.)

I'd imagine a refresh is going include the same panel the Dell 3008WFP is using and cost roughly same—about $1999.

I checked out the NAB website, and I did not see Apple listed as being an exhibitor at this year's show :(. An update of the panels/price drop seem likely by WWDC though, but I wouldn't expect a full redesign until the Mac Pro and MacBook Pro also see case redesigns.

I've said this before and I still believe it. Apple has said they will be green and are under pressure for it. I don't think they will introduce any new LCD display that isn't LED backlit, so I don't expect to see the ACDs refreshed before that is feasible (from a quality and price standpoint). The LED backlit LCD HDTVs are still significantly more costly than regular LCD HDTVs, so we may still have a wait on our hands. Apple only just updated the 17" laptop display to LED.

In the meantime, the current ACDs use excellent S-IPS panels, and are still a good buy if you want color accuracy, IMHO.

I'm looking to get one this summer... I'm hoping Apple gets around to updating them by then. It's been over a year now which is very strange. Perhaps they've got something cool up their sleeves.

...or are just lazy. :(

Slim to None.

Yeh that's one problem. The other problem is there's just not a) many suppliers for LCD panels... let alone LED backlit and b) they're not exactly putting many out there.

Apple's favorite supplier, LG.Phillips, doesn't even have LED displays in the sizes Apple would need. And judging by Samsung's $4500 30", it would appear similar offerings in S-IPS land probably won't come cheap. I don't think Apple really wants to cannibalize their lineup with twice as expensive displays just to go green either—they generally keep around the same prices or cut them with each new revision.

And they're still grossly overpriced and currently not competitive compared to what' available elsewhere. Apple needed a price drop yesterday.

How so? For the work that I do, I needed a S-IPS monitor, and the ACD 23" that I have just bought was the cheapest S-IPS I could find. Out of the box, it's just stunning. The other panel that was comparable quality in terms of color I was considering was the NEC 2490 W-uxi at about $1100. So the ACD was about $200 cheaper. How this is grossly overpriced I have no idea.

Yep, the ACD 23 is very fairly priced.
