1.5 years is too long? My early 2011 is super fast, and I hope it lasts a few more years.

Considering my Rev 1 lasted me close to 6 years (I'd say 5 good ones) I can't believe that a computer less than 2 years old can be considered "old" in any sense of the word, but if you just feel like throwing away money I guess that's your prerogative.

I plan on keeping my 2011 Macbook Air 13' for years. I have the money to upgrade every year but I just don't see the need. I keep most of my data on my PC (5 hard drives and over 10TB of hd space, only using 80GB... yes.... I know).

That said, shiny keys -- I can't stand that on my macbook air!!! So I wipe down the keyboard regularly and my keyboard is keeping like new so far after 5 months. I also try to use external keyboards as much as I can. Just got the Apple wireless keyboard yesterday cuz I was sick of crappy Logitech ones.

I don't know how people use dirty keyboards - my wife calls me a germ freak but I keep my keyboards like new even though I program all day. Washing hands regularly keeps oil residue from forming. Gah... shiny keys makes me cringe. lol

I've also gotten a 2011 13 inch base model MBP. I've added a 120Gb of SSD and moved the original HDD to where the SuperDrive was. I've since upgraded to ML.

Boot time now is 16 secs, and most apps open in split second.

Don't think even a normal 2012 MBP can beat this.:)

TS, did you come from a PC background? New to the Mac? :)

@TC: The reasons you listed to me do not justify a complete upgrade of the system. If you're so bent on "fast" give it an SSD and up your RAM other than that a new MBP will be a big disappointment. The only reason to upgrade is for gaming compatibility and thats something a 15 in. will suit you for.

Its your money, but you really should give it an SSD, 8GB RAM, and purchase apple care with it, and your machine will pretty much be unstoppable. :p

I'm not sure why but I don't like to upgrade stuff myself, prefer it to be all stock, I have read horror stories about SSD drives and don't want to be one of those who ends up getting system crashes etc, just like it to be all standard.

I'm not even going to respond (past this).

Good.

PS - Why all the hate? What is wrong with me treating myself to a new machine? Do you all have an issue or something.

The only thing we're seeing that's upsetting is that you are throwing a perfectly good machine out for a rather upsetting reason. What we see is, "Oh, I'm throwing a perfectly useful year old MBP out for a seconds' more in speed for my apps to open..." ;)

I am not throwing it out, I am selling it on for someone else to use, secondly, I am upgrading from a 2.4 i5 to a 2.9 i7, 8GB and an extra 250GB hard drive space, not to mention the USB 3.0, and the Intel 4000 HD graphics, these are significant upgrades if you ask me, considering with the Student discount, the laptop is costing me £1074, with a free £70 iTunes voucher and free Applecare, selling my MBP for around £650, costs me £350 overall. That is a lot of upgrade for £350, same price as an SSD (the one someone linked to) - And the speed difference will not be that much quicker (I know this from the 11 MBA 256GB I just bought)

You should have led with this, and you probably could have avoided the flamefest.

I honestly thought the 'bought a new MBP' would have been a nice little chat about how nice it is to own a new laptop, not a complete bloodbath.

Plus I dented my MBP about a week after I bought it, which is another reason why I wanted a new one.

Yeah there's a mega thread up on the top for buying/ordering a new MBP.

does the dent effect the performance of the macbook fro working?

dude changing an HD to an SSD takes 4 steps

remove the lid

remove the HD

install SSD

reinstall lid

boom done

What you said above makes a lot more sense. Your other posts till now made you sound kinda... spoiled-ish. I don't know the proper word. The thing that made me a little sad was that I know a LOT of people who would do unspeakable things just to play with your old macbook.

Eh, I think it's more of the fact that you...

1) Started a topic that you just made a purchase (there are dozens of these).
2) Posted that your upgrading from a 2011 model to 2012 model for more space/RAM.
3) And that your main use is web browsing.

I think that combo could burn down the interwebz. :)

PS - Why all the hate? What is wrong with me treating myself to a new machine? Do you all have an issue or something.

The hate is because this is how most people read your OP:

"Hey. I have a computer that's better and newer than yours, but I'm calling it old and slow and replacing it with something even newer by spending some money you wish you had. I use it for web browsing. And I don't feel like going the cost effective route of simple upgrades just because. Does anyone feel happy for me?"

@TC: you really need to look at this link.

Installation is super super easy and can be done really quickly. You'd be saving a lot on the services that Apple provides. I myself think it's a bit ridiculous that Apple charges 100 for something simple as a RAM upgrade, and the fact that they sometimes keep things overnight for that simple of a test makes my blood boil a bit.

May chuck an SSD in the new MBP when it comes.

That simple ay.

are u not inclined enough to even youtube it either?

i mean its ur money do what u want but such as waste though if the only reaosn ur upgrading is because of a dent and u think a computer thats only a year old is obsolete.

my moms 2011 macbook with an ssd runs as fast as a 2012 retina i have for normal usage.

you will not notice any performance increse for your 2000 dollar facebook machine

I know how to change a HDD in a MBP, have done it before, but I am more talking about the messing about with the system, and reports of crashes I have heard, and when did I say it was a facebook machine?

It is also used for work which includes Photoshop, which needs a performance machine.

Even so, you can easily accomplish those tasks on your current model. I myself use Photoshop regularly.

So what?

Are you going to buy a new iPhone when it comes out? Even though the old one will do what the new one does??

Most of us spend a lot of time figuring out which setup will work best for us, be most cost effective and last the longest. You seem to just like having the newest thing with a weird (ignorant) way to justify it.

You are bragging.. plain and simple. SSD and RAM upgrades are going to be a lot more noticeable upgrades than the processor bump. And if you don't want to do it yourself I'm sure Apple would love to do it for you.

This is not analogous. If it has 4G capabilities then yes. A lot of people still have their iPhone 4 because the two year upgrade period wasn't up when the 4S came out. Plus, you don't have a contract with your computer (unless you want to argue Apple care)
