iPhone Side button won’t always turn on phone

I see the part with volume down button used on older iPhones 7+ and older which is opposite from other poster using his volume up button.

I had read that a few day’s back unfortunately nothing pertains to this issue I’m experiencing.

Yeah, that's more for a "soft reset" that was brought up. As far as just shutting down and turning back on the following should apply:

As another poster mentioned, iOS 13 takes a long time to shut down, especially on the new phones. On the new phones, there is no spinning wheel indication showing the phone is shutting down. Also, the new phones require the side button to be held (after the phone is fully shut off) for a good 5-6 seconds to power on. With prior phones, it was 2-3 seconds.

Edit: Just tested with my 11 and it took 45 seconds to shut off! I then held the side button for 5 seconds and it turned back on.

Just Apple’s way of testing whether you really want to turn on your phone. They call it 3D power touch and they think you’ll love it.

How do you know your phone is shutting off immediately? Since they got rid of the spinning wheel (which is still there on my 7 running iOS 13) how can you tell the phone is done powering off?
With my 11, I can tell the phone is still booting off because since it has an LCD , the backlight on the screen stays barely on until the phone is off. However, you have an 11 pro max which has an OLED and no backlight to indicate the phone is still on.

And if it was taking an extra 20-30 seconds to shut down I would happily live with it as long as it consistently started up each time I pressed and held the side button.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that the shut down can take some time and therefore startup will not occur until the phone has fully shut down, no matter how long you hold the power button. As soon as it initiates a shutdown, it will disconnect from anything and show a black screen, but with my 11, I know it’s still shutting down because I can still see the faint backlight (like I said in my previous post) but your phone has no indication that it’s still shutting down as there is no backlight. This is true. Doesn’t matter how long you wait. I usually have to press the button twice before it will begin to power back on. First try is almost always a fail.

My exact experience.
My normal wait was minute or two.
But I will keep loose track on 1st push versus multiple pushes of side button after that minute or two.

So strange as I noticed it on my new phone Sept 20th day I got it and tested wife and kids XS same issue they hardly turn theirs off so wouldn't have noticed but I shut down and startup more often.

I’ve noticed it only with iPhones with iOS 13.x. Haven’t experienced it with my iPads. So it’s definitely software and it’s not just the 11 models my X started doing it as well the moment I put iOS 13 on it before I upgraded to the 11 pro. Same experience on my wife’s devices.

I think the issue may be that the phone hasn't always powered off completely when trying to power it back up. It takes a long time to shut down even though it *appears* to be powered down with a completely black screen (at least on the OLED models). So holding in the side button won't power it up because it's still not completely powered off.

No it doesn’t take 30 minutes to shut down. I thought that too and tested by waiting longer. It’s a bug for sure.

You have to press and hold till it powers on. May take 5-10 seconds even on XS Max. There’s no point returning it.

Remember, restarting a phone these days isn’t like hitting a lightning switch. It’s more like restarting a computer, i.e. the shutdown process has it’s own life and needs time just as the startup process.
I’m surprised people don’t understand this and instead thinks it’s a problem with the actual power button.
I’m also surprised that Apple has yet never implemented a restart option from the shutdown screen. It would save time and confusion for a lot of people (who don’t know how to actually dig deep into the system and create a shortcut for the restart process).

Incorrect my friend.
I can wait an hour and it’s still a coin flip if I can start. It’s been mentioned before but I’m quite sure we who have this issue know how long we have waited after a shutdown.

No it doesn’t take more than 30 minutes for the device to shut off. You can wait a day and still have to press the button a second time for it to turn on as the first button press nearly always fails to start the device. I’ve tested this now on two iPhone X’s, the Xr, the Xs, the 11, and the 11 pro. Only seems to effect iPhones as I’m not seeing this issue on the iPad’s.

I’ve already posted I have consistently shutdown in less than 10 seconds from moving “off slider” and ALWAYS been able to start in ONE push of the side button holding it in for no more than 7-8 seconds before white Apple shows on screen during restart.

My issue is I could wait over night and 9 out of 10 times side button won’t start phone.

Are you seriously saying when we can’t start our phones after 15-30-60 minutes it’s cause it’s still shutting down and that’s normal?

You are talking nonsense anything over a minute plus is an issue. And I have never had to ever wait that long.
Which doesn’t even matter as it has nothing to do at all with this problem.

13.2 beta by recommendation of an Apple Genius. And I can now Start/Restart successfully first time I push and hold side button for 6-8 seconds.
Exactly how previous phones and iOS’s worked for me.
One pain in the butt over with.

It’s iOS 13! iPhone XS/XR here.

After turning it off, it won’t work even if kept pressed for 15s.
I have to let go, give it some more seconds and then it powers on.

Ive turned mine off and placed it on a wireless charging pad or plugged it in and it wont auto-boot like it used to either.
