A quick fix...

So far, here's what I've tried and hopefully it will help some people.

After having the dropout probems when blackra1ning/sn0wing, I realized that if I installed blacks 0w from the Rock (and I assume cydia) store, and then going to manage and then uninstalled blacksnow, the droppouts stopped.

I then tried re-installing snow using the blackrain app, problems came back. Went through the uninstall of snow, problems left. So, I figured it must be a problem with the blackrain-based installer of snow. With problems gone, jailbroke with blackrain, I fresh-installed blacksnow with rock. Problems came back. Finally, I decided to buy MiFi for $10, and now I can tether (even with wifi!) and no dropouts.

I'm going to try the restoring of the 5.6 AT&T IPCC file after snowing method and will report back if that solves the dropouts after making it snow...

Follow your own logic: something is wrong with BlackSn0w no matter how you install it, not the installer. It's been my experience that it does this on every 3G and 3GS (tried four phones; all do it with BlackSn0w).

FINALLY...a way to fix blacksn0w's dropouts!

Absolutely, I agree completely. BUT...I finally found a way to fix it. It seems as if the blacksn0w installer somehow damages the IPCC carrier file. After re-installing blacksn0w, and verifying that the problems came back, I re-downloaded the IPCC from here and loaded it to my 3GS, and problem solved! BTW, I cant take full credit for that fix, I saw it posted earlier on this forum and simply followed the original poster's steps and posted the download link.

On a mac, you just option-click the "Update" or "Check for updates" button in iTunes, and then select the IPCC. Restart after the upload finishes (only a few seconds), and away you go.

EDIT: As I was typing this, I got a dropout. damn it. however, it did take hours instead of minutes this time...

FWIW....

I ended up revisiting the Genius Bar for my dropout issues. Did a complete restore as new to stock firmware, and still had dropout problems with 3G.

The 2nd replacement (refurb tethered JB :() is setup and jailbroken identical to the first two 3Gs iPhones that I had issues with, and this one has no WiFi and/or 3G signal issues.

It's a known issue, happened with me

I too am using miwi for tethering ( $10)

hopefully 3.1.3 supports ben help tethering hack, so i can go back to unjailbroken full reception :p

Sorry man, w/o jailbreak and/or unlock, benm lost support at OS 3.0...

found a solution. hope it will help you

i found somewhere that if you uninstall pushfix the problem will disappear, so in my case i have no pushfix installed so i've intalled it reboot and miracle no more signal drops (since 1 week). i'm so happy cause the signal drops occured everytime i tried to call , now i'm free :D

i know that pushfix was not made to fix that but it works

let me know if it work for you

I can't select the IPCC, do you know why? Furthermore I have got a sim from T-mobile, the Netherlands. Do you reckon it will work?

really don't think this has anything to do with jailbreaking. i had my jailbroken 3gs next to my brother's stock 3G iphone and both were getting 3g signal drop outs at the same time and then coming back on around the same time. I think, at least in our case, it's related to AT&T

I don't know. In my case, I was jb with blackra1n and unlocked with blacksn0w and encountered dropouts very frequently. Seemed to happen most often shortly after placing a call or receiving one. Multiple times a day and very annoying.

For the past week + I've been jb with redsn0w (no unlock) on 3.1.2, bb 5.11.07 and haven't had a single dropout. My guess is that it is related to the blacksn0w unlock, but I am aware that Geohot feels it's an AT&T problem.

Well I am on the T-mobile network in the Netherlands and experiencing the same problems, really annoying! Tried to switchback to firmware 3.0.1 and unlock, but then I have no service at all. Someone please help me :(

I side with Geohot, I had this issue (worse) on my GS prior to 3.1.2 and Blackra1n. It seemed to imporve with 3.1.2, JB did not seem to make it worse.

We know that it's blacksn0w-related. We determined that a long time ago! Also, you are confusing GeoHot's WiFi issue determination with this matter. He said that the WiFi problem was an Apple bug which he would fix for them if they paid him. Indeed, I had the WiFi issue on a virgin iPhone, so he is right. Also, it has nothing to do with AT&T... My sister also has the issue on T-Mobile (US), as do many in this thread.

You have a different problem. This one is CONFIRMED to be w/blackea1n no matter what the carrier. Also, GeoHot has no "side" to this. You are confusing it with the WiFi situation.

NO. Please be more responsible with your posts to avoid misinformation. We are comparing BEFORE and AFTER with AT&T as well as other carriers and the conclusion is simple: blacksn0w causes these signal dropouts exactly as others describe.

agreed I have full bars, and I still get dropped 3g signal

the only way to avoid this when I tether is I have winamp running in the background streaming a very low bitrate audio stream (dial up quality )

using this method = internet never drops out

huh?? how does this help/work???? could you walk me through it if i were to do that with say VLC on OS X....?

I have a 3G and I always get signal drops I'm on Fido in Canada and sometimes this can be really annoying but I'm just waiting till Ultrasn0w supports 5.11.07

I'm from sweden guys (hope my english won't pose any problems)
and I can confirm that the dropped calls have nothing to do with AT&T.

I have an Iphone 3gs fw 3.1.2 (7D11)
new iboot, (purchased it a month ago)
Jailbroken and unlocked:
Blackra1n + blacksn0w and I'm getting dropped calls like craaazy.

Would help me a lot if you guys could answer my 2 questions:

1. Guys, is there ANY way for me to jailbreak and unlock the carrier-restriction without having to deal with Blacksn0w?

2. What is this new thing with pwnage tool 3.1.5? will it also unlock my phone?

Kind regards

The problem with my "drop out" is that it connects fine, speed is fine, but after a while of inactivity the connection drops out

For me I startup winamp/windowsmediaplayer/etc and have an online radio station running in the background

http://kpcclive1.publicradio.org/listen.pls

For me its KPCC ( NPR)

IF I stop the radio stream, after about 5-10 minutes of inactivity, I have to reset my 3G setting on my iPhone for my internet tethering to work

I'm confused, You installed pushfix and it fixed your drop out problem ?

can anyone confirm this before I spend $6 ?

He's saying that it solves the problem when tething and stationary, not that it will prevent a moving person making calls from experiencing it. Basically, just like the phone is more likely to do it when ending a call, it is more likely to do it when the Internet connection goes inactive. Basically, it's more "frivolous" about switching towers and/or signal types, which is what seemingly triggers it. It's why turning off 3G seems to help for US T-Mobile customers (no reason to be looking for a 3G signal on an incompatible 3G network).

Would streaming on the iPhone simultaneously while tethering accomplish the same thing? Like, say, Pandora Radio?

I have a newer 3GS running 3.1.2 (tethered jailbreak) and I jaibroke/unlocked it with Blackra1n. I got the signal dropout issues with every sim I put in, 02, Virgin, Voda, 3, T-Mobile. I did a stock restore back to 3.1.2 a couple of weeks ago (after 3.1.3 came out) and even with the untouched 3.1.2 firmware, with the phone just sitting on my desk, the o2 signal regularly went from full bars to "No Service" then after a couple of minutes back to full bars. I installed push fix, no difference, I uninstalled pushfix, no difference

Then I turned off 3G.

The signal has stayed rock steady ever since. When I turn 3g back on, the signal dropouts return.

Anyone else tried this "fix"?

We've known all along that switching towers and network types triggers it. In the USA, turning off 3G is pretty much only going to help for T-Mobile customers. Anyone on the original network (like AT&T) with an unlocked phone is likely doing it to tether, which loses most of it's usefulness on Edge. Because this thread is *about* AT&T (though the problem is not specific to them), it can't really be called a "fix" here.

Edit: Well, the knowledge is useful if you are willing to apply it. For example, enable 3G when stationary with a good signal but revert to Edge for phone calls and data on the go. You're still pretty limited, so it's not really "fixing" anything. :(
