Would streaming on the iPhone simultaneously while tethering accomplish the same thing? Like, say, Pandora Radio?

just tested this, and no it does not work

I was running Pandora on my iPhone and the tethering would still drop out every couple minutes, but Pandora never dropped on the iPhone. Pretty weird

So in conclusion

a) blackrain = will cause 3g data dropouts unless you are downloading/streaming something like pandora (more annoying, i just reset the 3g antenna and everything works ) This is regardless if you are tethering or not tethering

Tethering to a computer

b) If you are streaming on your iPhone your tethering ( on the computer) will drop every couple of minutes ( resetting, 3g or network settings helps this ). Must be a DHCP problem

c) If you want tethering to never drop out on your computer, have pandora/winamp radio stream in the background.

My guess is that there is some dhcp errors when you let the 3G data go inactive, so keeping it active on your computer ( by streaming) keeps the connection live.

Hope that's clear guys

Finally a forum where this is being talked about. I have the same issues and its reaaaaallly annoying. So Im curious can the AT&T tethering be activated via any other means? or is blackra1n the only way?

You have to be jailbroken as it involves changes to CommCenter and that can only be accessed if the phone is JB.

but is blackrain the only JB that can get the ATT tether? Cause im on ATT so no need to unlock, and if blacksnow is the issue, i'd rather use another JB to get the ATT tethering than deal with this crap.

I believe Redsn0w 0.93 also modifies for tethering or there are Cydia patches which also do it.

Redsn0w 0.92 Links for 0.93 with hack are in last line at the bottom.

At work I have an EXTREMELY poor signal. 90% of the time it shows 100% full-strenght Edge, but it doesn't work at all (I work almost underground in a facility where cell phones are developed, so perhaps there is interfering equipment). Anyway, the other 10% is about half "AT&T" mode (no calls or data) and half 3G (minimal signal strength to two bars max). However, if I am already streaming Pandora Radio. When I get to work, it usually works fine until my first break when I can go and get a good signal again. Basically, I chalk it up to extremely good caching algorithms that can make excellent use of that 5% data availabilty. As such, perhaps it wasn't the best to test with, as it may spend the majority of the time idle (maximum cache)?

Also, I believe that should be "a. Blacksn0w = ..." (not "blackrain").

The way I understand it is that Blackra1n (JB) does not make these changes, but Blacksn0w (UL) does. Blacksn0w is the only unlock for 5.11.07, so USA T-Mobile customers stuck on that modem/baseband firmware are screwed. If the changes are not exclusive to unlocking, then redsn0w (JB, not unlock) may be able to help. As it stands, I am not trying to tether, I'm just trying to figure this out for my sister's T-Mobile iPhone 3G (running Blacksn0w by necessity for the 5.11.07 unlock) after seeing that Blacksn0w did the same thing to my 3GS on AT&T. she isn't trying to tether either. Her problems were minimized by disabling 3G, which is unsupported on US T-Mobile anyway, but that still isn't a fix. This seems to be a problem for everyone running Blacksn0w regardless of network or activity, so it needs to be fixed. I imagine that it has something to do with the exploit's vector needing to inject itself every time the network changes, switches towers, or reconnects, which often takes too long and causes timeouts/connection issues, hence, frequent "searching." Hopefully the new exploit the devs and Hotz are talking about won't be even more hackish and convulted, causing similar problems.

Yes, Blacksn0w also modifies the CommCenter.

My last 2 responses were in reply to questions about tethering and CommCenter from 2 different posters.

Blackra1n does seem to cause/aggravate the wifi problem.

Yeah, I had a problem with wifi on blackra1n too on my 3GS. I googled it and found instructions to reset the network settings. This caused the phone to not boot back up and had to be restored. After that and blackra1ning again, I've had no Wifi issues in months, even with restoring from my old backup.

BUT (and there is a BUT)...

...I've been having this service dropout crap for the past few months and it's taking a lot of strength to NOT punch the phone when it happens (it get's that bad). Everytime I make a call or someone calls me after the phone has sat idle for a period of time, the call just completely drops out after about 2 minutes on the call. EVERYTIME. Second call attempt, once it finally connects back to service, the call is fine until I hang up. At my house, I can't use 3G almost at all, EVEN WITH 5 bars. Sometimes it won't even send texts or MMS and I have to switch to Edge so I don't keep getting "Message Send Failure" everytime. House is the phone nonfunctional on 3G even with 5 bars??? Also, I have my music studio detached from my house. I come in the house to get a drink and my wife's like "why didn't you answer your phone? I called you like 5 times!" And the whole time, my phone never even rang. Also, a lot of times, on 3G, the phone will go to No Service after sending a successful MMS.

It's just getting really frustrating. It happens on my wifes 3G as well, which is jailbroken on 3.1.2 like my 3GS. Also, let me mention that both of us are NOT USING BLACKSNOW. But we are having the same issues everyone is mentioning here. I don't know if it's Blackra1n related, but I don't think it's Blacksnow related since we don't have it, even though some of you say it's "confirmed" to be Blacksnow. And again, this issue is not to be confused with the Wifi issue. Like I said, I solved that with a restore/rejailbreak. And I also don't have PushFix on my phone, if that even has anything to do with it.

So before I decide to dump AT&T, I've decided to run stock for a couple of days to see how it is. I have an original release 3GS (from the day it released last July) and have been jailbroken since that first day. I just restored to stock 3.1.2 a few hours ago and so far, so good at my house; even on 3G. MMS is sending right away, whereas it would take 10-15 seconds with blackra1n. Service hasn't dropped out yet. If it still does it, I think I might move on to a Droid or something. I don't want to. I hate to give up the iPhone. It's that phone you get and wonder why you didn't have it sooner. And the Droid seems like the closest thing to an iPhone out there (I hate BB). But I can't deal with this any longer. So the test is on; "AT&T or Blackra1n, who's causing the problem?" We'll see!

Finally fixed?

Guys, after countless restores and jailbreaks I came up with something that actually seems to work.... I simply reinstalled Blacksnow from within BlackRa1n (without removing the previous Blacksnow installation, just reinstall on top of it).

I know this might sound too simple to be true but in may case (3g setup as new phone) worked for the dropped calls problem....

Can anybody else try this to confirm it?

I have the "No-service" problem and think I have tried everything now. I have restored the firmware a couple of times with the same result.
The problem occurs both with the Telenor (Swedish Operator which it is locked to) and with Telia (Swedish Operator).

The best way to simulate the problem is to send a MMS message to you own number. When the message is sent, directly try to make a call. This always ends up with a Call failure and the phone hangs and then drops to "No Service" for about 5 seconds and then back to full signal bars with 3g connection.

Maybe I found a solution to this problem but I am not sure. I tried the following:

Restored to factory 3.1.2 in iTunes (Thru DFU mode) without SIM inserted.
I didn´t insert my SIM after the restore and Didn´t activate the phone.
Closed Itunes
Run BlackRa1n from OS X.
Unplugged the phone when I saw Gehots logo.
I Connected to my wireless network and installed BlackSn0w.
Refreshed network settings and rebooted
Shut the phone off
Put in the sim Card
Started the phone

This confuguration worked without signal drops for two days. I tried it in my car and gave my second phone a call during my 30 minutes way home and everything worked fine. I used spotify, Google maps, send MMS (to my own number) and everything just worked.

WHen i Was home i tried to use my phone as a thetering modem. I plugged it in to my Macbook and Itunes started. After this time the signal problems (No Service) came back and I think the only solution is to restore the phone with the steps mention above. And I am not going to connect it to iTunes in the future as long as I want the unlock to function properly.

Have you guys tried to NOT connect your phones to Itunes after the jailbreak/unlock?
If not can you try to do a restore and follow the steps above to see if it works?

Try reinstalling Blackra1n on top of your first installation... amazingly that worked for me...

All speculations, no real solutions. Its a bug in blackra1n which geohot does not want to fix ATM. We'll have to live with it till the dev team comes up with their version as they typically cover most of the scenarios missed by others.

So far, here's what I've tried and hopefully it will help some people.

After having the dropout probems when blackra1ning/sn0wing, I realized that if I installed blacks 0w from the Rock (and I assume cydia) store, and then going to manage and then uninstalled blacksnow, the droppouts stopped.

I then tried re-installing snow using the blackrain app, problems came back. Went through the uninstall of snow, problems left. So, I figured it must be a problem with the blackrain-based installer of snow. With problems gone, jailbroke with blackrain, I fresh-installed blacksnow with rock. Problems came back. Finally, I decided to buy MiFi for $10, and now I can tether (even with wifi!) and no dropouts.

I'm going to try the restoring of the 5.6 AT&T IPCC file after snowing method and will report back if that solves the dropouts after making it snow...

guyz plz help me. i dont no wat happen to my iphone as it got stuck for no reason . i had restored it with 3.1.3 as done through itunes. and later got back to 3.1.2. the phone is perfect but for my surprise the carrier icon is not to be seen on my settings .. i dont no what to do .. please help me out as this happend after running blackra1n and installing blacksn0w.

yup this was also happening to me in the past. I just restored my phone and yes it did update to the 3.1.3 software but I am not worried about it, I didn't want the jailbreak anymore because my 3GS kept crashing and the shortage of bars randomly was coming to much.

My phone is much smoother now and the battery is running much longer.

I jailbroke with blackrain, I'm pretty sure the problem is also with blackrain

I started having problems with signal dropping out after running blackra1n when it came out. I tried everything that was suggested but it never went away. I just lived with it. Then I started having more problems with dropping calls. The phone completely locked up and got stuck on the white apple icon. I had to do a complete restore and updated to 3.1.3. I miss the jailbreak apps (backgrounder, categories, five icon dock and tethering), but now my phone works the way it used too. Going to wait for the DevTeam to come up with the next jailbreak, if I can wait that long.

Okay well some are saying update IPCC file anyone care to point me to a fido ipcc carrier file?

I have gone through this thread and also looking for a Fido IPCC.

Hey Leet Apple, try as some have suggested, to go to 'settings' --> 'reset' and reset the carrier settings, I could be wrong but believe this may in fact retrieve what it needs from your carrier (Fido) and reinstalls it.

I have done this and am trying to reproduce the problem, so far seems ok, but I have been just dialing my iPhone from 2 different phones the past 30 minutes or so.

As I said, so far no problems.

There is no Reset Option for Carrier:confused:
