The only way I see a real change happening is if a very, very major breach occurs at Facebook that has direct effect on a huge percentage of their users. I'm not talking "your E-mail address got compromised" level breaches here. I'm talking "35% of US Facebook users now have fraudulent credit applications that they have to personally spend hours of their life addressing as a direct result of a breach at Facebook."
I suspect even that wouldn't be enough. However, if Facebook took $1 out of all their users bank accounts, they would be bankrupt overnight.

This is another reason I've started moving all my email stuff to a paid for service. Fastmail and I love it.
Australia (where Fastmail is) has unfettered access to all digital information that crosses it's borders. The government can seize and wiretap any computer in the country and force company employees to build in backdoors and bypass encryption. That employee is also not allowed to tell anybody they are being forced to do it or they face prison.

As great as Fastmail is, your data basically belongs to the Australian government.

To me: The worst thing about ads is getting non-relevant ads.

If I'm going to be stuck seeing ads, I literally WANT them to be targeted for me.

I don't want ads for cars, women-specific products, beer, for infants, and stores that don't carry products I want. I want the ads to know which kinds of books, movies, and music I like.

That said, I pay to remove ads when I can for services that I want (like streaming), but if the ads were more relevant and weren't the same ads over and over and over, I might consider the cheaper ad tier for a streaming service.
