So the new air has the option but not the pro? What’s the deal with this? I bought both machines to test them out Bc I’m not sure which one I want and it doesn’t make sense the pro doesn’t have silent click.

anyone know why?

Does the option to silent click do anything on your Air?
On my Air the option doesn't seem to do anything.

Has anyone gotten this to work? It doesn't seem to do anything on my Air either. Bug? Fixed in 11.1?

Not sure about the Air but I know my M1 MacBook Pro has a physical clicking mechanism in the touchpad that you can use/feel when the machine is completely off so i'm certain there's no functionality for "Silent Clicking".

Unless your MBP is very old, it does not have physical clicking mechanism, trackpad is always powered so it will click for that. If you manage to fully deplete battery it will not click.

On my M1 MBA, it doesn't make it completely silent but it does change the sound slightly to me. Without it ticked, I get an almost metallic sound which disappears when I tick the box. It's very subtle but I much prefer it ticked.

It is likely that MBA trackpad clicking is already very silent compared to MBP it won't make much difference. In MBP trackpad is louder, it has this hollow echoing very loud clicking sound.

I thought my device was faulty. It changes very slightly while my 2015 mbp had a noticeable difference with on/off.

It is so silent already, it is hard to notice.

I'm just testing my new MBA M1 and definitely trackpad is silent and much much better than it was in my MBP 2019 13". Very solid and silent click without hollowness like with MBP. Also keyboard is much more solid, sure cannot compare directly Butterfly and Magic keyboard but in MBA keyboard sounds about the same on all keys, not like in MBP that some keys had this hollow sound.

Ah maybe it's that.

I love the new keyboard. more solid feeling than the one on mbp 2015.

Me too. This keyboard is great. I did not even realize how much I missed keyboard like with with my MBP 2019 (Butterfly). Minor but noticeable longer key travel is so much nicer and natural feeling especially when typing fast. Also I love that MBA is so much more solid feeling machine than Pro. However display is not that good in MBA... :(

Can you be specific about "not that good"? I find the MBA display incredibly good! A very tiny difference in brightness makes no difference if you never run at full brightness anyway (I usually run 50% or less). Anyway, I am interested in what you find not good?

The track pad on my MBP M1 is about twice as loud as my MBA 2018, would you say yours is quite loud as well?

That is "normal". Base structure of the machines is still the same and MBA (not even MBA M1) does not make this hollow springy clicking sound.

You can tell what Silent Clicking does if you crank the Click to "Firm" first, then try with Silent Clicking enabled/disabled.

I use Light force clicking and it's a very subtle difference at that force level.

This is a good suggestion. I thought it was broken until I did this test. I will say, this is still pretty loud. I wish you could make it totally silent. I use one-click so I guess that's an option.

MBA is much more silent than MBP in clicking sound
