On an iphone 4 if Apple still signs the firmware its possible to downgrade its baseband back to the official 4.1 baseband version but that version still CANNOT be unlocked.
Just use itunes to restore back to official 4.1 and make sure if your hosts file is edited to redirect to cydia that you remove the redirect.
If the hosts file has this on the bottom 74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com
just delete it.

Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.

This is so wrong it is not even funny. You cannot downgrade the basedband of an iPhone 4. So don't wast your time even trying this.

S-

Well why don't we wait and see who is wrong. Apple is still signing 4.1 and 2.10 on an IP4 both can be signed and it will downgrade. At least I can assure you it did when people upgraded to 4.1 and were able to downgrade back to 1.59 baseband before 4.1 final was released and only 4.1 Gm was still out there.

We are on the same page but I am trying to get him to edit the host file the easy way. Tiny Umbrella will put it back to normal if you uncheck the box and close tiny umbrella.

Thanks nebo1ss & Applejuiced.

Are you sure the host file is set correctly. Open a terminal window and type in the following command.

ping gs.apple.com
and see what result you have. If it starts with a 74 then you have not set it correctly. If it starts with a 127 then you are pointing to apple correctly.

The restore is a normal restore through Itunes no fancy stuff just plug in the phone go to itunes and hit restore.

So Apple signs the baseband? Then how come nobody has figured out how to save the signatures for the basebands, so people can downgrade their baseband if they "accidentally" update it?

Okay that is your problem. You have wifi sync set up through Cydia on your phone you need to disable it. The only time I have seen that 17.x.x.x before
was under those conditions. You are not pointing to apple correctly. The other thing you can do is to go actually look at the host file if you don't know how to do it come back.

This is what your host file on a MAC should look like

##
# Host Database
#
# localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
# when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.
##
127.0.0.1 localhost
255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
::1 localhost
fe80::1%lo0 localhost
#74.200.10.249 gs.apple.com

Thanks alot nebo1ss !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Finally i able to DG my BB to 2.10.04
hurryyyyyyyy....

That my friend is an excellent question and I hope someone is working on it.

What was the final change you made to be able to get the firmware from apple directly.

iTunes & hit restore after 4/5 times...successful restore without any error msg.

Your gr8 help is highly appreciated......you saved me 4rm frustration. :D

SIDEWINDER:

I hope you are following this thread and see that the Baseband downgrade was successful. It is not something that can be done except in this small window where the previous version is still the only signed version and you need to get back from a GM version of a new software.

You should be more careful next time telling people not to even bother to try things that someone who may know a little more than you suggest. We all learn something new everyday.

YOUR LITTLE ADVICE CHANGE WHOLE THING TO ME.

THANKS AGAIN

I knew he could downgrade to the 4.1 baseband since that is still the official baseband.

He can't downgrade the baseband to one that can be unlocked. The 4.1 baseband cannot be unlocked.

So you wasted all of his time. The next unlock, if there is one, will be for 4.2 so having that baseband will not be a problem.

In that case you need to learn to read. The post you quoted and responded to specifically says it would take him back to 2.10 and that he would not be able to unlock it. However, the reason for doing so is that no one knows if any unlock crash that has been found will work on 3.10 only that it will work on 2.10. It makes perfect sense to get back to 2.10 if you can and you cannot predict the future.

Yep, that sounds good.
Didn't notice that feature before but good to know.

open Tiny Umbrella tick advance option - I am now on 4.1 BB 02.10.04

MY imagination can I request cydia for version 4.0.1 ??
as my SHSH blobs 4.0.1 has on cydia.

Start TSS Server - kick device out of recovery !!!

Won't work. As nebo1ss explained somewhere upthread, the reason you were able to downgrade your baseband to 02.10.04 is because it is the current official baseband, and Apple is still signing it. This signature is different from the signature for the firmware. So having SHSH for 4.0.1 / restoring to 4.0.1 does nothing to your baseband. It will stay at 02.10.04. You are permanently stuck at that baseband, and there's nothing you can do to downgrade any further. But from what I understand, an unlock for 02.10.04 will be released once iOS 4.2 is out. So now that you're on 02.10.04, you just have to sit tight and wait for that unlock to be released.
