I got a 2016 silver mbp. At the time it was the first time space grey was released so I just went with silver. I felt like at the time space grey would stick out too much and was worried it would get stolen or something. Now that space grey is common I’m probably going to get it whenever I do upgrade

Got to say that my silver 2013 15" looks better than the 16" silver. Might be the different size of the keyboard (keys) or the trackpad dunno.

Only when I fire up something intensive (Overwatch).
Thanks a lot!

I'm now thinking of going with a base silver model. I run several programs in a parallels VM with 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM, which would still fit well into a 6-core 16 GB machine. My main issue with the 8-core CPU, 32 GB RAM, and 5500M 8 GB is that I can really only use all that power when connected to a power outlet. Pushing the machine at full-blast (ex: transcoding, heavy VM apps) drains the battery VERY quickly.
Just noticed your new MBP specifications, how is your new one compared to the 8 core?
Any different behaviour with heat and VMs?

Surprisingly not much different in terms of peak power consumption under load, based on what I’ve seen in Intel Power Gadget.

i suspect that all 3 chips (i7 2.6, i9 2.3, i9 2.4) are constrained by the power envelope to a certain extent.

It seems that the machine limits the CPU to around 45W when the dGPU is active, and when the dGPU is not active the CPU can go as high as 60W.

At full load during transcoding, the i7 2.6 hovers at 3.4 GHz turbo while the i9 2.4 stays at around 2.8 GHz.

I’m now wondering if the i9 2.3 would be the sweet spot between the two.

So the temperatures must be about the same when the cpu is idle or under load. Are they?
I really doubt that there is a great difference or any at all regarding the i9 2.3.
many posts are pointing out that the i9 2.4 must be the better binned cpu, running cooler than the others.
Of course we need stats to confirm this.

Really starting to sound like the base model is the one to go with.

Just don't like SG, and have heard about scratches on it to be more visible. Like silver's contrast with the black keys. Don't care at all what others consider to be 'outdated design' or whatever, just feel that it is the cleanest/purest design available. It looks and feels exactly the same as my 2011 17" and my wife's 2015 15" (on the contrary to my work's silver 2019 13" which has some weird tactile feeling when slowly rubbing it).

Temperatures under load are obviously going to be higher than at idle. I don’t recall having done specific Tj temperature comparisons between the i7 and the i9, however.

Given the basic physics around power consumption and heat dissipation, both the i7 and the i9 operate within the same thermal/power envelope. That means the i7 should be able to all-core turbo higher than the i9, which is what I had observed.

I have a 2016 15-inch model in Space Grey. Rumour has it that the Space Grey colour is painted on top of the Silver base. Regardless, after removing several stickers I have discovered that there is discolouration around these areas, which was never a problem for my 2013 Silver 15-inch model. Therefore I have returned to Silver once more for the 16-inch model.

That is very interesting, and I discovered something similar. My 2016 15" MBP had a hard case around it, and this particular case had grating on the bottom.

When I removed the hard case last week, you could see discoloration in the shape of the grating! I thought it'd be dirt and cleaned it with one of those computer wipes. But nope, it has permanently discolored. Quite surprising.
