So they gave every American customers the tool so that Germans can use it.

Somehow, that doesn't make much sense to me.

The post with the list of normal, legit reasons to take out the SIM card are the most likely reasons, I think.

They didn't give Germans or Americans the tool .... they gave ALL iPhones the tool ... its a single product ... 1 iPhone for the planet ... America doesn't get a custom version - nor does any other country

Because the SIM isn't pre-installed? At least in the UK it isn't: When I got my 3G the SIM came in a separate envelope. Also, because I was upgrading, I didn't even use the new SIM: I took the SIM out of my old iPhone and put it in the new one
Precisely. 1st Gen iPhone came with SIM pre-installed. You didn't need the SIM tool. iPhone 3G didn't come with it pre-installed. I don't think it has anything to do with making it easier to swap SIMs in and out for 'future plans' or anything like that.

Some people upgraded from the old iPhone and wanted to give it to someone they knew as an iPod Touch...so they ejected the SIM card.

Hmm, come to think of it, I didn't see a SIM ejector tool in my box.

I'm SO gonna go to the Apple store and raise a ruckus! :D jk
