That's funny, other people seem to be able to do so. They just have to buy full price and score one in a walk-in at an Apple store.

Have you done that and been refused?

Yes, it's inconsistent. Some folks have been able to do it, but DC local stores are not allowing it. Besides being discrimatory, it's frustrating and a waste of time to have to go to the store and be turned away. And yes, I have been offering to pay full price up front.

Well, that sucks. It definitely seems there's inconsistent application of policy. I suggest taking it up with Apple corporate via social media to find out what the official stance is on the matter.

I probably wouldn't dive into the "discriminatory" pool that's so overused today it dilutes the importance of real instances. That'd just distract from the point. Though if you have actual evidence of intent to discriminate against a protected class, definitely raise a stink.

Is there any consistent story about whether you can walk into an Apple Store and buy a Verizon iPhone 7 without having to do the above? Everyone says ordering online requires an account, but there seems to be some variation in reports about whether they check your account status if buying in-store.

And are the A1779's extra bands likely to translate to meaningful performance advantages over the A1660 if released in the US?

Hundreds of thousands of people have done it including me.If you pay full price, it will be unlocked and they won't ask you for any account info. I have bought 3 of my them this year without giving any account info and have been doing that every year since the 5S.

So would I be able to buy a Sprint or Verizon phone and have it work with GSM networks? Will it remain unlocked? I currently have T-Mobile but would like to have the option to switch to Verizon or another carrier in the future.

Yes, when you buy a Verizon or Sprint model full price, it will be unlocked and can be used on GSM carriers like AT&T and T-mobile.
