The speed test is disappointing.

I am sure current VZW users will be absolutely thrilled. But similar things happen on AT&T "4G" where you speeds plummet severely while on a call. I wouldn't call it unusable internet, but it is painfully slow, and absolutely noticeable.

Wait, this isn't a standard thing? Then again I've only ever used phones in Europe!

Simultaneous voice and data has been around with AT&T for a long time... LTE data or if you were on a call you fell back to HSPA/UMTS (fake 4G) for simultaneous voice and data.

Also, AT&T is rolling this out now and when they are done they'll have simultaneous voice and data on LTE and on their fallback network...

Where do you have your data from? Cause that's just plain not true.
VoLTE chips are pretty darn new. That's why it's limited to those new devices. LTE was even new in '07. And when I say new, I mean not even finalised.

No Prepaid for Verizon

Went to Verizon today and asked about the prepaid for the iphone6/plus, and was very disappointed to hear that iphone6/plus can not use prepaid for verizon, they tried but the iphone says it's not compatible. Whats up, Apple ?
fyi : Verizon start rolling out the new 4G/LTE for prepaid for other devices.

False. The first iPhone didn't support 3G, and therefore didn't support simultaneous voice-and-data. And it obviously didn't support VoLTE either.

VoLTE provides many benefits in addition to simultaneous voice-and-data, including higher quality calls.

My iPhone (original) was on AT&T and it supported simultaneous data and voice. True, it obviously was not over LTE. So, I don't know where you are getting your facts from...

That's true enough, but not what the others said.

VoLTE

The VoLTE for iPhone only works for IPHONE6/plus but not 5s or before. I just checked with Verizon.

added this to my phone today now that my plan change to the single line is complete. haven't had a chance to try talking on it though. What should I expect, is this just so I can use data while on a call or am I supposed to get much clearer quality/reception on voice calls?

I am trying to enable it, but no luck.

I turned on Voice + Data on my phone and nothing happens, the circle just keeps going... When I sign into Verizon Website, it doesn't come up as a feature... It says I have to remove a feature first, when I do that, the feature that needs to be removed fails when I select to remove it.

Getting frustrated.

VZW can enable it over the phone if you want to call.

So all those rumors about the 5c and 5s getting VoLTE are lies huh?

They support it, but it seems they will only activate for the new 6 models as a selling "feature". Before anyone states the 5/5S/5C models don't have the antennae, they do. Straight off Apple's site, compare the 6 Plus, 6, 5S and 5C. Note the section for "Cellular and Wireless" hardware, aside from "ac" wireless they are exactly the same, and processor or NFC has nothing to do with it, and the 5S has an additional antenna and more LTE band coverage: http://www.apple.com/iphone/compare/.

(I even recall HD Voice and VoLTE as points mentioned at last years keynote)

Pretty sure it didn't. The original iPhone supported wifi data and voice, which all iPhones have, but not cellular data and voice. In fact, if you were actively downloading data over EDGE, calls would go straight to voicemail.

So, I don't know where you are getting your facts from...

i guess they now realize that CDMA was a big mistake.

First off, LTE is not for GSM only. That's a common misconception. LTE is the 4G path for both GSM and CDMA-2000 carriers. Heck, Verizon did more early R&D and commitment to LTE than the GSM carriers in the USA.

--

Secondly, CDMA radios were far superior to the TDMA radios that GSM started with. Engineers knew from the early 1990s that everyone would be moving to CDMA radios for 3G later on.

That's why the countries and companies with money started with CDMA. And sure enough, when it came time to add EVDO-3G, the CDMA carriers had comparatively little to do. They could continue to use their original setup with relatively minor updates.

On the other hand, GSM carriers had to add a second radio type to both their towers and phones for UMTS-3G. Now they required both TDMA and WCDMA radios. Moreover, WCDMA towers need a different arrangement. That's why AT&T was years behind Verizon deploying 3G. To many, though, this was offset by the fact that UMTS-3G over WCDMA could handle voice+data.

(As with LTE, UMTS-3G is not a GSM carrier only protocol. CDMA-2000 carriers in Korea, for example, supported both EVDO-3G and UMTS-3G.)

---

When LTE came along, GSM carriers had to support THREE air methods in their towers and phones. TDMA for 2G voice/EDGE. WCDMA for 3G. FDMA for LTE.

CDMA-2000 carriers only needed two radio types. CDMA and FDMA.

Hopefully, one day everyone can move to just one radio for LTE. This should make for cheaper phones and maybe even cheaper phone bills.

But only when connected to LTE? That's how the article makes it sound.

Yeah. VoLTE is basically like a Verizon version of FaceTime Audio, only it allows you to call anyone and not just other FaceTime users.

If you're in a Verizon EVDO area, there's still no voice+data since you're calling on CDMA. If you're in an LTE area you can do voice+data, but with a big caveat: if you leave LTE coverage, your call drops. It won't handoff to the CDMA network.
