Haha, this is essentially an argument between those who did wait and those that didn't, or those whose needs were met by the Macbook Air and those whose needs weren't met. Let me bitch and be free.

The thing is, everyone here pretty much convinced me that the new MBPs would be released at MWSF. Normally I'd be pretty skeptical about rumors like that but this community seemed reasonably confident that it would happen (what with the whole Buyer's Guide saying "DO NOT BUY, UPDATES SOON" in big bold red letters). Internet, you have failed me once again.

I will be back in 3 months if that doesn't happen.

Well, I'd hate to boil this down to just a "Wait X amount of months, thats when an update is due", type thing, I just don't see the REAL urgency in upgrading to penryn. I also don't see a huge reason to NOT update, so I do suspect there'll be a silent update for it soon.

I think the MacPro was considerably more overdue for an update before it got it's update, than the MacBook Pro is now. Apple is cutting edge on design, but as far as updating hardware in existing products, they tend to lax and not keep entirely up to date. It's probably a result of Apple being the only company that makes Macs. On the PC side there are several manufactures so everytime there's any kind of hardware update, some manufacture will be picking it up and making a new model for it.

I don't really have a horse in this fight either, I will be getting a Mac Pro in approximately two weeks whether or not it's updated. I'd like it to be updated, but I really don't mind about the current spec. I'd like a major redesign with magentic latches and new keyboards but... I could really take or leave a silent processor update. I'd rather have the newest tech for the same buck, but the current MacBook Pro hardware suffices for what I need.

I'll say what I always say to people who are waiting to buy a new machine. If you can wait, if you don't need it, or the current model doesn't fit some aspect that you need, then wait. If you need it, or your just waiting for an update just for an update (and you REALLY want it), then go ahead and get it.

Think what you want. I KNEW there would be no MB or MBP update. To me, using the Santa Rosa and slapping a Penryn CPU in there is not an update. If it is to you, we just have different definitions. Apple is not dumb. If anyone looked at the intel roadmap you would see WHY there was no update, I will say it AGAIN, there is nothing to update to. Yeah you can say the 8800 mobile, the 2.8Ghz CPU but guess what? Those draw TOO MUCH power and produce too much heat for the current MBP design. Do people buy the MBP to game? Didn't think so. The 8600GM is still a very decent mobile card, it is not the best but certainly good enough. The gain of the Penryn in the current chipset is MINISCULE - 5% performance perhaps, 5% battery life? Intel also has a history of die shrinks which are supposed to lessen heat but actually do the opposite. If Apple were to update the MBP NOW, they could give it the Penryn and give the 17" an LED backlit screen and a more robust video card. Sure it's possible that they would do this, but I do believe we will get the full monty with the new Montevina chipset, meaning redsign case, trackpad etc, etc.

I was one of the many that were disappointed by yesterday's MWSF (although the keynote was entertaining to watch as usual). I am ready to jump to the Mac side from Windows, and this just keeps my thirst going.

My desktop computer crashed finally (it had been adding up in the last month), but luckily I have an HP zv6000 that I loaded up a few years back to get me through this time while I wait. I'm among those that would like a new one now, but don't NEED it now...I can wait for even a silent refresh.

Big things for me, even outside of the Penryn upgrade and possibly GPU upgrade is the LED screen. I really like the look of them, and I'm excited about the possibilities of getting one when I switch over. The trackpad would be awesome, but for some reason for me it keeps coming back to the LED. The other things would be nice too, but I at least try to keep it real.

That said, a friend of mine had his PC crash and he had no computer to go to, so a friend of mine and I talked him into an iMac he's ordering tonight. That is a perfect example of NEEDING to get it now.

I do have to agree that if you NEED one now, buy it now.

I however, don't need a new laptop now (I have a work laptop and a high spec PC).

I will be waiting for the iMac to be updated somewhat, and although I was itching to buy a MBP (and have just sold my insurance replacement to fund majority of the price), I am thinking of waiting for the full upgrade (case and all).

My only worry is that if I don't like the new case, I'll be sorely disappointed to not have one of the current design.

Since Jobs made a commitment to transition the entire notebook line to LED displays by the end of '08 (MBA being the first to roll them out), that plus Montevina in mid-08 or beyond, might suggest the timing for the next refresh.

Maybe its just me - but i like the design of the current MBP and am somewhat afraid of what a newer version might look like.

Ever since I first saw Mini-Me and Yuo Ming on a plane with thier oversized/undersized Powerbooks I've liked this design..

The only thing I'd change is the Magnetic closure (I had a regular MB and thought that was pretty nifty) - but aside from that I'm still enjoying the MBP look!

As others have said, these are great laptops as-is, and should serve you well for a long time to come. If you need it, buy it. However, just because an update was not introduced at MWSF doesn't mean there couldn't be an update in the next few weeks or months (and yes, I know it's not as simple as a 6-month release schedule or whatever). Personally, I'm a college student who can afford to wait it out a little longer, and who wants to get the very best value out of the dollar. If this means that I'll have to wait a bit longer, so be it.

MBA or MBP? or the new MBP??

I was fully expecting a new Macbook Pro as everyone else, but now I'm having to decide between the Macbook Air and the Macbook Pro. I would buy the MBA, but somehow, the $1799US translates to $2999NZ on the New Zealand Apple store - using simple currency exchanges, it should be $2400NZ.

Even if you convert the $1799US in other currencies, such as Hong Kong, Korea, the Euro, and Australia, it's still significantly lower than the NZ price.

Anyway, i can get a 2.2ghz MBP for the same price as a 1.6ghz MBA, but the only thing preventing me is the fear of a new update:

- new processors?
- lower price on MBP?
- addition of multi-trackpad?
- an Apple-style re-design?

So for the mean while, I'll just have to wait until either the new MBP comes out or the MBA drops in price by at least $300 US.

i actually i think the most impressive thing about the MBA is the remote disk option. that to me is the real innovation. I think that the next macbook pro will be like the MBA, meaning sans built-in optical drive. It will probably have black backlight keys, and multitouch trackpad. basically a thicker MBA. but i wonder what kind of HD they will use? I want to say they will go with 1.8 in drives but the largest one i've seen available is 160gb. which means they would probably not use that seeing as how they won't go backward. is there an larger one coming out soon? this could be a hint of when it might come out.

I don't mean to offend but there is absolutely no way in hell that the next MBP comes without an optical drive. I'd personally hope for a Blu-Ray drive (probably not if it's just a refresh, but once they really do a full-blown redesign it should be there). But seriously, if you take the optical drive out then you might as well take 'pro' out of the name. The MBP is for people who work in the media related industries as much as it is for casual consumers, and an optical drive is pretty mandatory.

Here Here!!! Apple would be really dumb to remove the optical drive from the MacBook Pro. Photographers, Music Producers & Video Editors use MacBook Pro's, and they don't want to be messing around with external drives to burn their stuff on location.

I don't see it happening to be honest.

Macbook Pro Update

I don't think the new update of the MBP will be a 'thicker' MBA.

Apple isn't stupid and it won't disturb the market for MBA's. If it's got all the features that the MBA has - i.e. remote disk, super-slim, etc - what's the point of a Macbook Air that is so slow with a small harddrive? Won't people just buy the MBP??

I think the pro update will be modest - new penryn processors and most likely the multi-touch trackpad - but that's about as far they'll go.

Possibly a silent update like the Mac Pro??
