So, doing the math, if the top 5% is 2.00 GB and as of recent, throttling seem to start at around 2.00 GB, or as they state 12 X more that the average user. That would mean 95% of people are using 0.17 GB

So if the lower 95% starts averaging 0.50 GB, that would push throttling up 6.00 GB.

I directly, these new plans will help raise the throttling ceiling limit we currently are experiencing.

FYI I got my notice at 5.20 GB last month.

So I say we should all try to raise our monthly usage so that the average increases. Screw you AT&T!

If every did AT&T would likely lower it from 2 down to 1.5.

You will not be teaching AT&T any lesson!;)

Not doing anything is even worse.
At the least there should be a class action lawsuit to stop AT&T's unfair business practice.
Throttling was never mentioned when I signed up for unlimited plan and changing the terms of the original agreement is wrong.

If you felt that way, you shouldn't have signed the contract stating that they have the right to do so.

Not that I'm condoning AT&T (there are plenty of post showing my feelings regarding them spread over the many throttling threads), but you signed a contract saying that they can change the terms if they see fit... and that you are welcome to leave, without paying an ETF, if you didn't like the new terms.

They announced that they were going to begin throttling last JULY!

Simply put, you signed a contract saying they can change the terms, they changed the terms, nobody thought it would effect them (even though it was incredibly obvious that it would), and now, 6 months later, you're upset.

Good luck with the FCC or a class action lawsuit... AT&T is well within their rights. If you didn't like the throttling, you had a few months to leave after they first announced it, but chose not to.

Holy crap... You must live in a massive city

nope lol, google my location!

the data is well abused, I direct upload pictures from my camera in my own time
then in work the phone is used as the office downloading mule as our internet connection is so slow lol

Wong! Cap is 2gb

Stop spreading misinformation. AT&T's unlimited data plans aren't capped or throttled at 2GB. They're throttled when you're in the TOP 5% of data users, NOT when you pass the 2GB barrier. I use 3-4GB of data per month and have never been throttled.

They throttled us at 2.6GB. (Said if it continues they will terminate us...we have new iPhones) (We can hardly use them because of this throttling.) I asked them about the mid 2GB plan..they said unlimited users are not based on tier use, but on other unlimited use...this doesn't make sense, because they are throttling all unlimited users. So next month our unlimited plans can be in that 5% range at just 1GB...our unlimited plan is very limiting! PS they are trying to get you to switch to tiered so they can get rid of the unlimited people...and then start raising rates because they owe billions on that failed T-Mobile merger.

FWIW i've been over 2GB the past 3 months (probably more i'm just too lazy to check further back) without a single text from AT&T about throttling. This month i'm at 2.64GB with 4 more days left in my bill cycle! Out side of Nashville TN where AT&T is the second largest cell provider! There doesn't seem to be too much of a rhyme or reason to how they are throttling but i'm keeping my unlimited as long as I can!

"Unfair business practices"???

How do you figure that. ATT is doing what it needs to do to protect their network. They are fully within their rights to "throttle" your usage and have warned you they will do so if you exceed what 95% of the other users use. The term "throttling" was not in the contract but if you read carefully AT&T has the right to do it.

You are just making yourself unhappy for nothing as AT&T will prevail.

I will agree that att is doing what they need to to protect their system on the condition that you show me the actual figures on bandwidth use. Your best guess is just not good enough.

It will go something like this:

Some lawyer files class action lawsuit against ATT. People pile on, ATT will offer a settlement without admitting any wrong doing. Lawyers will get few million dollars for their expenses and settlement. ATT users will get an apology and around $10 settlement check and they will "adjust their business practices" and promise not to do it again while their marketing geniuses will create a new fee that they can asess.

ATT screwed the pooch on this one, they were the ones pushing for unlimited data and forcing it down people throats. They had iphone exclusive for 5 years and instead of improving their network they just swallowed profits. They ****ed up and now trying to come out of the mess they themselves created. Nice going idiots

AT&T throttling is, by best measure, entirely regional.

People will get throttled at differing data caps in some areas where factors like population, userbase, network congestion, and the beefiness of their network in particular areas differs.

I've never seen a throttle warning in the Boston suburbs but have heard countless NYC-area customers complaining about getting nailed at 2GB. I attribute this to the less-dense population of the Boston area with the possibility of more towers serving fewer data connections per respective tower...etc.

We should put together a map of AT&T data users in the US, their data usage per month, and if/at what point people get throttled in those areas. Work out our own average. I'm pretty certain this is how they're doing it. They shape traffic differently in any given area.

I just don't understand the people that come in here and say it's OK to let AT&T change the terms because it was in the contract and that we agreed to it.
Just about every contract has that verbage to protect the company that wrote the contract. It is something that us consumers can't change.
Just because it's there does not give them the right to piss on the user at any time.
How far will you let these corporations push you?

Last billing cycle I received a throttling warning at 4.9GB, but used 6.1GB before the cycle was over and never saw my speed drop. I do live outside of the Dallas/Fort-worth metropolitan area so I'd say it does vary by region.

Yup, it does. As has been pointed out, it's in the contract that they can change the terms at will, and they changed the terms at will.

Obviously, and understandably, you're pissed off. But it doesn't change the fact that a contract was signed, and one party chose to exercise it's privilege within the contract.

You ask "how far will you let these corporations push you". Aside from no longer doing business with the company (an effective strategy if enough people do it!), what do you suggest we do so we are not "pushed around"

Please understand, I am not defending ATT. Phone carriers are not my favorite folks. OK, they're pretty much money grubbing scumbags. But aside from ventilating your frustration ( a perfectly reasonable thing to do here on MR), you might also suggest solutions, if you have any.:D

It does not say only that they can change the terms, it says that if they change the terms the customer can get out with no penalty.

I did I fired AT&T last month and now have unlimited LTE and unlimited 4G hotspot. 35 Mb down and 20 up oh ya.

I'm still trying to figure out if I should switch to the new 3gb plan, seems useless to keep the 'unlimited' anymore when you get throttled at 2gb for the same price that you can get 3gb throttle free...

Call to cancel your account and see what they offer. I did and I got my messages dropped to 10 dollars down from 20 and I'm getting a 10 dollar credit on my account every month. I switched to the 5gb data plan and I'm paying the same as the unlimited. Just be calm and polite.

I switched from my unlimited to the 3GB plan! And honestly, it works for me, as I have never ever really been over 3GB more than twice. It's the same price, I get top speeds in my home area(s) and frankly 3GB is a lot on the phone. I mostly stream music, if i do video it's over wifi, way faster! But the 3GB plan is perfect for me. I will enjoy it and probably never go over, i'd say out of my 4 years with an iPhone i probably average 1gb/month. This seems perfect!

I am sure others will do this too!

Same here! I use between 3 close to 4 gb's a month. I'll be good with the 5gb plan.
