What no Anime Girl voice coming out of your iPhone, oh the in humanity of it all. What will Otaku do?;)

More human all the time

So, Siri claims to speak more languages than she actually does.

I know a few people like that. :)

You're thinking way too small.

If Siri knew multiple languages, you could say, "Translate a message to Japanese for me: <insert message>"

Alternatively, you could say, "Please translate what this person is saying to English,"

Siri would wait a few moments to process the non English languages she's hearing, maybe mix it with some GPS info to figure out what the likely languages are, and then speak in whatever language she determines is appropriate, "Hello, I am Siri and am acting as a translator. Please clearly tell me what you'd like me to tell my friend, in your own language of <that language>."

Wrong.

All communication needs to be in its most concise form.
Irrelevant use of language wastes everyone's time.
More importantly, it wastes my time.

Its a shame you buy a Phone and you cant use Siri on it because Apple are not supporting your language for Siri.

You have to pay the full load for the phone and only Siri is available in English, German, French...

I asked Siri when the iPad 3 would ship.
She was no help.

LolololololL made my day
Now ask her to give you the source codes

SIRI is totally useless and a complete disappointment

Who's going to use SIRI? Instead of asking for the weather, you try to formulate the question in slightly challenging ways, like "do I need an umbrella tomorrow?" Come on, who are we kidding? If it was any use for the blind people at least it would make sense, but it isn't, and if you talk to SIRI in public you will look like a complete idiot. This is supposed to impress the same crowd that rejoiced in the 1980s when their Chrysler cars kept repeating "the door is ajar" when the door was wide open. The feature didn't last long obviously. Besides, android phones show you the weather on the front page if you want, so you don't even have to ask.

Nuance recognizer supports 50+ different languages, it's only a matter of time before a good majority of the languages are supported.

http://www.nuance.com/for-business/...ion/recognizer/recognizer-languages/index.htm

The issue, I would imagine, isn't so much Siri understanding the words you are saying but more an issue of Siri understanding your message.

Converting sounds to a string of text and converting strings of text to sound is one thing (something that Nuance recogniser does very well). Taking that string of text and determining that strings meaning and returning an appropiate service that best meets the intention of the command is a completely different thing.

Meaning and intention are very abstract and complex concepts. Concepts that include the gamut of language, culture, protocols, context, history and customs. Concepts that vary from language to language and culture to culture.

It really is a cool technology when you think about and a massive project Apple have undertaken. Potentially Siri is capable of a lot, lot more than it currently does. Looking very forward to see what Apple has in store and the progress Apple adds other languages to it.

:)

What a thing to let slip - French, German and now Japanese! Siri has really blown all hope of winning the Republican nomination...

Would be nice if Apple would get Siri working and out of "beta" in the UK, the fact we can not do local searches is ridiculous.

I get your point, but I think Siri would need to introduce herself as a translator to the other person, first, just to make sure that person understands what's happening. Not to mention it makes we more friendly and lifelike, and serves to market the iOS devices that include Siri.

i wonder ... what if u change the iPhone language to japanese and keep siri in english, would it understand japanese for text imput cuz when i change siri to english and keep my iPhone language to german it still recognizes german text imput for sms, anyone tried?

Natural language recognition is part of Nuance offerings. Good chance Siri uses some of that technology... unless they built the natural language recognizer in house.

Who's going to use Siri? Do you mean who else besides the thousands that are using it daily? Of course, you don't have to craft tricky questions... You can literally say "Weather" and siri will show you weather, or "Music" and she will play music.. Etc.. The point was to demonstrate that Siri understands Context as well as the Content of what you are saying. You are either ignorant of Siri's abilities, or you are one of those cynical old farts that are afraid of change and scoffs at anything new... I'm betting it’s the latter.

I wonder if Siri will speak different dialects as well? Btw siri as a translator would be a great feature to have i hope apple integrates that.

Asian languages are a lot more difficult for automated voice recognition than western languages. This is mostly due to inflections changing the meaning of the word and not just the emphasis. IBM attempted a Japanese voice recognition system in the 80's with disastrous and very humorous results. Good luck!

It works were for me... however int he UK it's still crippled as there is no location information still!

Part of the reason I bought the 4S was for this and they have still not sorted it out.

Thumbs up for Russian.

Siri lies. :D
Also, she couldn't understand my horrible French accent when I did French.

I don't really find it that useful except for finding nearby stuff, more of a novelty thing that makes the 4S even more famous. Also, the fact that there is no Siri on the iPhone 4 is really stupid. It just shows how pointless the 4S upgrade was.
