isn't the point of Siri, that you can do these things while driving, running, biking, ... dancing, clapping etc. aka using no hands?

when are you using your laptop without using your hands? apart from 1 obvious thing: listening to music?

and if you do that, it cannot hear you? :p

I'll tell you why...

I'd love to just be able to say:

Email Paul and tell him that I'll be there at 8 o'clock"

instead of clicking on the email program, click new message, type the name/address, tab to the Subject, type the subject, tab to the field and type the message and than click send.

:D

I was just having a discussion about this today, frankly I think the future of Siri is really on the Mac.

As our homes become more connected (smart appliances etc) do you want to go to your computer and push buttons to turn things on or off, set timers etc.? Just say "Siri, preheat the oven to 425." Or maybe one day "Siri, start up the car for me."

Even just to control apps on the Mac itself would be great. "Siri, open up Pro Tools and pull up last night's session". Or "Siri, see if there's a new episode of 'Breaking Bad' available yet."

Unlike a phone, which relies on batteries, your Mac desktop is always plugged in. Simply saying "Siri" (or even better if you could rename your personal assistant) could call up the program using the internal mic. Constantly powering a microphone on an iPhone would waste battery, but on a plugged in Mac would be inconsequential.

Maybe it's wishful thinking, but if it can be done on a phone, I can't imagine why it couldn't work on Macs that are infinitely more powerful.

I can certanly understand why the Siri team was put to work for iOS first and foremost. Apple makes more money selling iPhones than any other product (thus far).
I am predicting that the focus will now switch to Mac OSX, making the whole mac experience much more different than the "other guys"...

I sure hope they do it fast !

Look at Steve Jobs presentation of the first Macintosh. "I'll let the Macintosh speak for itself", and watch/listen to the reaction of the crowd.

Quite frankly I am amazed that in 2011 we still don't have a good, accurate and natural voice control system for our computers. Siri will change that.

ok i have a question
SIRI is a specialized software for just the iPhone 4S right? like it isn't bundled with iOS 5 or anything right

I find it interesting to see the similarities to some of apple's innovations and the classic movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. Clearly Siri was inspired by HAL 9000 (the AI computer assistant). Provided the general population adopts Siri as a useful addition to their everyday life, I am sure the technology will evolve to have a mac computer as the "center" of a household. Many people already have a Mac Mini as their media center for home theaters. Imagine the convenience of just talking to the Mini and having it perform household tasks like Mak47's suggestion of preheating the oven or checking for missed TV episodes.

I really hope Apple adds the API's for developers to utilize Siri both for OS X and iOS. A virtual personal assistant is meant to simulate AI, and since we don't have true AI our only option is to teach Siri to respond correctly to every possible question, request, accent, and colloquialism. Apple is just one company, and even with almost endless resources, API's that allow the whole developer community to take advantage of Siri would be the best way to increase functionality.

I hope so.

I'd like our Macs to be more responsive like the computers in Iron Man and Red Planet. That would be really cool :)

Ha! Macs don't have A5 chips :p

I can see Siri coming to the Mac soon but not before it comes to the iPad 2.

I'm guessing 10.7.4 or thereabouts.

siri + mac = incredible

voice control has never worked for me on my mac, but I've always thought it was a great idea. Also microsoft have tried and failed. would be amazing with siri's capabilities.

Im on the fence with siri !

Lets see what the new owners of the iPhone 4s say when they have had a chance to street test it.

I remember being impressed with my 2001 iMac and logging into OS 9 using my voice and performing tasks with my voice. It seems like technology went backwards for a few years before it went forward again. The iMac of that era was a fraction of the speed of today's Macs.

Siri, open up a Pages document, and copy down what I say. 'blahblahblah.....' Siri, proof read it for me, and make sure to fix grammar and spellings for me. After you are done, send it to Mr. Stephan for me, will you?

Oh man, I'd love to see that happen.....

"Siri, will Siri come to Macs"

:D
lol

----------

however i do think siri will come to the macs, probably with the rumored new design of the macbooks, as they would put in a special key just for Siri... but they probably will eventually do an app for it, but not now,

Ya I'm already so tired of using a keyboard and trackpad :p

Haha, but come on, how much sci-fi have we all read to know that complete reliance on technology could lead to bad results? "Siri, prepare the oven" "No." "... Sudo prepare the oven?" ".... No." *blows up the oven*

But in all serious, I think this could be pretty helpful on a computer. Typing and clicking could become pretty slow, and even touch screen functionality could become limited and glitchy. Voice recognition is just that short step until we get wireless implants in our brains that allow us to control computer functions, telekinetically.

This also reminds me of SARAH, Sheriff Carter's house from the TV show "EUReKA". It was run by an AI.
