Reads it

I turned the notifications on for preview messages, but I don't want to have them preview. I hate having it being that accessible for others to read without actually opening it. Apple really should consider fixing that in their next update...

SIRI will read back text messages. But in my experience, its only if your using your handset. If your are using the headset for SIRI to read back text messages, you run into 2 issues.

1. Even though you have Allow access to SIRI when locked with a passcode turned ON. You still have to enter your passcode to unlock your phone for SIRI to read your text or make a text. Seems to be the only thing you have to enter your passcode for. Everything else I do using SIRI works fine.

2. Even after turning on the SIRI Passcode use feature ON, when using your headset (as others have mentioned), SIRI will go through the motions, but will not read the incoming text. You get dead space, then SIRI comes back to give you options on what you want to do next. This doesn't happen if you use the device without the headset.

I'm guessing this is just a glitch due to it being a beta version. But the fact that they do advertise this capability, you'd think it would work. Anyone have other tips other than the ones mentioned, that will get SIRI to read back text messages using the headset?

So how does siri read out messages with wrong spellings, and shortcut texts?

I'm guessing it's the same way the iPhone 4S is able to spell out the full word from abbreviations, and spell check. SIRI does retrieve the info from a database and not on your phone, so it's capable of huge computations at much faster speeds than if it were to do it from your phone.

That is a bit of a downside for me. Since trying to make a handsfree call, before it was the built in iPhone voice command that did the searching and dialing for you (which was pretty quick), now it's SIRI doing it for you. So it takes a little more time because it now has to retrieve instructions from a remote server, then back to your phone to retrieve your contacts list, then it dials. Sometimes, it thinks your asking for directions. And for those that don't get locations yet, it becomes a little annoying having to start all over again.
