That is correct, Siri is stupid in many languages
That's why when I totally naturally task Siri to "Weck mich um neun" (wake me up at nine) it will ask me in return "Welchen Weg möchtest du gehen?" (Which way do you want to go?)

Siri is pisspoor in German imho. You have to very presicely use keywords in order for Siri to recognize what you what. Speak naturally to it my ass.

In Dutch you get similar results.

Sincere question: Does anyone here use Siri?

I remember thinking it was pretty cool when it launched. But i have turned it off completely on my 6S and tMBP, because I see it more as an obstacle(performance, etc) than a convenience. IMHO
I use SIRI all the time - I have it hooked up to my home lighting system and its fantastic. I also use it to dictate notes (maybe 90-95% accurate), read/send messages, set alarms and timers.

I like Siri. Apparently much more than most other people here. But I do wish they'd tone down the "personality". She keeps saying stuff about my "humble abode" and "voila!" when I ask to turn on/off lights and it's like having an annoying friend who is way too corny and thinks he's funnier than he really is.

Improves every two weeks?
I only use four / five commands to Siri.
And apart from setting alarm, it usually makes silly mistakes in interpreting what I am asking for even though I have been repeating the same requests for the past 2 year!

She just wants to make sure..:)

Yes, Siri understands: "wake message from nine" and answers

There aren't any unread messages.

To be fair I spoke German into the English set up, but from my experience it doesn't matter what I say . Siri hasn't been right in years.

I have tried off and on, but Siri is more of a bother than helpful.

Mostly whatever I say she wants to call somebody. And, I am sooooo anti-social to begin with.

You speak German into the English set up and are surprised that it does not understand you?? Why dont you speak to it in Mandarin as well?? As I said, Siri understands this sentence perfectly on my (German) iPad Air. Just use it as it is meant to be used.

Um how about learning english?! Sounds like it doesn't do too well in other languages either by all the comments. Go home Siri, you're drunk

The problem is that Siri is serially monolingual.
True, just ask her to speak Spanish, she’ll tell you to change settings to select her Spanish cousin. Ask her something in Japanese, she won’t understand. Siri is missing language detection, an essential ingredient to be considered “multilingual”. (And hard to add, of course.)

It constantly amazes me that anyone, anywhere in any language should want to talk to a computer. I would feel an even bigger dork than usual.

This is a problem right here in the US, with Siri set to English. The US has many towns, street names, and businesses with non-English origins, and Siri is completely useless when these are involved.

For example, there's a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida named "Aventura" which features one of the largest and most popular shopping malls in the area, "Aventura Mall". Go ahead, fire up Siri and try your hardest to get it to understand that name. No matter how you pronounce it, Siri will never understand, even if you add it to your Contacts and enter phonetic spellings for the name.

100% true and one of the reasons why Siri is useless/frustating all these years.

Same thing happens to me when asking Siri to play certain podcast for example, it doesn't recognize what I tell it, and doesn't even look at the podcasts I have subscribed to or downloaded to try to infer what I mean.

It would be nice if it actually did English though. Siri is brain dead.

yea, but it can only understand one language at the same time. I speak russian and english, my Siri is set to English. It can only read / send stuff in english, but not in russian. It will work in Russian but only if I completely switch it - then english doesn't work. Maybe one day it will be intelligent enough to understand any language, or at least you should be able to select more than one... If it can already do them separately, why not at the same time...

Not really. The problem is that Siri is serially monolingual.

I actually think Siri is pretty good at straight-up speech recognition. I've tested English and French a lot, Spanish a little, and Russian and Mandarin a few times. It does well.

But it can't mix languages. And the back-end capabilities are limited.

I disagree with you. It's a multilingual idiot if you compare it's speech recognition to google now. If I could replace Siri with Google now, I would in a second. Not only are the results significantly more accurate, it is usable!

Just because Siri has more language support just means it is unusable in more languages. Better to be good at a few things than bad at many!

This is hilarious to me. Siri's biggest strength is something you, personally, will probably never use. lol.

I would like to have your problems. To have some problems with Siri. We have only one problem. We have no Siri. As all countries in middle part of Europe.

That map is not up to date ,there is support for Siri in Denmark.

... and its inability to parse simple commands, recognize names in your contacts, or follow instructions without referring you to the Web are I ts biggest weaknesses.

I use Siri all the time. Sure, it's struggles with deciphering and dictation at times. But for tasking on the iPhone, it works really well for scheduling, emails, asking random questions, etc. Siri struggles in areas, but has its advantages.

And to be honest, your question about sincerity of people using Siri is far likely more using Siri than not. Especially, hands-free in the car, Siri is crucial for me. I can't speak for the language barrier, but for English, I have had very little difficulty aside from defining a word wrong or obscuring the word. That said, everybody's experience will be different and opinions will vary.

Seriously, I don't have too many issues using Siri and I give quite a few commands. (btw I am using it in German).

- I tell her to turn on/off lights (just name each lights accordingly)
- I tell her to turn on the TV
- I tell her to set a timer (e.g. for cooking eggs)
- I tell her to put things on my grocery list (which is named "Einkaufsliste" and is shared with my wife so either of us can pick it up at the store)
- I tell her to set alarms
- On the watch while in the car I tell her to send iMessages to specific people

In total I'd say it gets more than 99% right at least with those commands... sometimes (e.g. while watching soccer) I'd ask "how old is Mats Hummels" and Siri even tells me the age - not from a website it just gives the number.

Siri can barely understand Spanish.

Too bad that support doesn't cover accents within the same language. I love that Siri supports multiple languages but it needs to get better at understanding the different ways people speak English.

So now it can get it wrong in more languages. Today if I say more than 3-4 words in an IM, I have to edit the ones that are incorrect. For any reasonable length sentence...its more trouble than typing it in the first place.
