You speak German into the English set up and are surprised that it does not understand you?? Why dont you speak to it in Mandarin as well?? As I said, Siri understands this sentence perfectly on my (German) iPad Air. Just use it as it is meant to be used.

Obviously would make no sense and a joke to see what would happen. Might as well have suggested to add Bavarian or Cologne slang etc.

Just switched my iPhone to Germany. Still no good, understands: "Vic much 09" and then found on the internet some people with Vic toria in their name.

Fact is for me Siri does not work despite trying many times. Waste of time. For everybody who gets it to work . Congrats.
[doublepost=1489082010][/doublepost]Well Si
Lol Multiple languages huh? Siri can't even understand my very plain non-accented English half the time. God forbid she try something like German or Mexican Spanish.

The language options you can set are:

English
English U.K.
Englis Australia
English India

Maybe one of these work.

Siri is appalling on Mac. Apple really got it wrong. Doesn't do what I ask. Can't do much at all really. Could have been great, but isn't. When there's two buttons to access Siri, then it's clear little thought was put into how it might work.

Well there is swabian german, bavarian german, fränkisch german, hessisch german, nasty to my ears but no offense sächsisch german, the whole northern i guess its supposed to be german german so i would say siri is not doing too bad in german over all

Siri struggles with contextualizing English and is pretty poor overall, especially trying to add notes or reminders with homonyms. And never mind using foreign names in an English sentence, unless you butcher the name in a fashion similar to how an uninformed English-speaker would pronounce it.

As to how Siri performs with the other languages I speak - who cares. Make Siri worth a $%# in English first *and* have her stop making funny back-chatter when she f's stuff up for the umpteenth time...

I disagree with you. It's a multilingual idiot if you compare it's speech recognition to google now. If I could replace Siri with Google now, I would in a second. Not only are the results significantly more accurate, it is usable!

Just because Siri has more language support just means it is unusable in more languages. Better to be good at a few things than bad at many!
I'm not sure what you're disagreeing with. I've said a few times that I don't find Siri very useful, and that for two of the three tasks that I do use Siri for, lack of multilingual speech recognition is a hindrance.

I do think that Siri single-language dictation works pretty well, but that alone doesn't a useful personal assistant make.

I just checked this with exaktly the same sentence. Siri understood perfectly and answered: Ein Wecker wurde für neun Uhr gestellt. So this is not a general problem with Siri, but depends on the pronouncation of the user, I think.

It works like 50:50. Sometimes she is so dumb, that she wouldn't even understand it when I completely unnaturally pronounce the "k". I just switched to saying: "Stell einen Wecker auf neun Uhr.", which is my point exactly. You have to use precise commands in order for Siri to reliably do the task. There are some other nitpick especially when you are trying to send a message, where she would interpret something you are saying something to her as part of the message, while said part would actually be something I would use to talk to her naturally. See my point? It's just not natural.

I find Siri doesn't understand me and often gives totally false replies. Even on fairly fast networks Siri seems slow to connect to the servers.

If Apple really want Siri to work correctly they are going o have to open up the purse strings and spend some money.

Siri rarely understands anything I say anymore. I used to be able to say, "Hey Siri! Send a text message to ...." and it used to work. Now not only does Siri not send the message, but she wants to phone a person whose name sounds nothing like the person for whom I asked or says she cannot understand or fulfill my request. Yep. Siri is utterly useless in English (and probably every other language, too).

If Siri is the future, I have no fear of AI. Siri proves that it is possible for a computer to become less proficient and even, dare I say, dumber.

Siri: all talk and no action which basically sums it up right there...

What's next? iPhone has competitors beat because it's easier to hold because of its bezels?

There should be an opt-out button for Apple capturing audio for dictation. That's why I never use dictation to unlock passwords. I assume they (Apple and others) are always listening.

Pretty sure the dictation button is disabled on password fields.

I've always felt a lot of the press and pundits unfairly overlooked the amount of language Siri is available in when comparing it to competitors. Especially the Alexa.

Personally I do not use Siri much outside of some basic stuff like asking it to call my wife. I have used dictation a lot as of late and think it's pretty freaking solid. On my Apple Watch I can dictate messages in different languages and it handles it no problem.

The problem is, Siri isn't as capable as some of its competitors. In that regard, Siri has less to do. So it shouldn't come as a surprise that Siri is able to master more languages over the fewer task that it can do. Hopefully, all of the R&D Apple has been doing and investing in these past few months will help Siri become what it was intended to be all along.

I'm Polish and I was using other translation services from Google and MSFT and both are better than Siri. Doesn't matter if I was speaking Polish or English other services worked better. I know you can make jokes that I should Polish my English and my English is Polish enough, but believe me other services are understanding me better :)

Great so it can play the theme song to the show The Wonder Years when I ask it to play the band The Wonder Years. I don't think I've despised a piece of technology more than Siri, they should figure out one language before supporting multiple ones.

I know. What happened to Siri? Sometimes she is on point and other times she's a hot mess. I have enough stress in my life and I don't need Siri interactions adding to the difficulties I endure with real human beings, so I don't use her much anymore. And I do miss Siri...the way she used to work for me.

I am going through something similar with my mom. She is losing her hearing, but refuses to get fitted for hearing aids, because she already sees too many doctors and is fed up with all the appointments.

I will try to have one conversation with her and end up in a subject entirely different by the time my mom completely mis-hears me and responds to what she thinks I said instead. Plus, she may have the early stages of dementia. It's hard to tell without getting the hearing problems addressed first.

Eventually she will agree to get her hearing aids, but for now it's a mess trying to communicate with her. As with Siri, we have to be loud and speak very slowly and clearly and simplify complex discussions to easily parsed sentences and phrases to ensure she had heard everything correctly. I don't know how my dad puts up with it.

I don't mean to equate the struggles of a real human being to the shortcomings of a badly maintained AI, but the difficulties and frustrations and aborted conversations are shockingly similar in feel from my perspective.

So, when I read stuff like Apple investing in weird seemingly pointless stuff like Planet of the Apps or sinking one billion dollars into a Chinese company whose relationship with Apple is unclear at present...I get a little bit frustrated with Apple for dropping the ball on this. I know Apple Music has nothing to do with this nor do any plans to get into self driving cars...but it's just human nature to connect all of these disparate dots and use it to accuse the management of losing the plot. Lol...it's practically a hobby on MacRumors. ;)

I'm Canadian and I live and work in Beijing. The last time I said Ni Hao to Siri on my Mac, she gave me a listing to some where in Hawaii lol It would be a better feature if you could just say what you want to say in any language and have Siri be able to switch languages on the fly rather than having to switch to the language. My wife speaks German and has the same issues.

Siri is one of the best things that happened to the iPhone. Through the years it's become my daily companion. I mostly use it to make phone calls, send messages, make quick social media posts, and get latest sports results. So farI've used it in two languages: English and French; and the experience is pretty similar.

Siri was certainly a great concept. The problem, however is the rate of development. Apple had a head start with Siri when they introduced it with the iPhone 4S (I think) fast forward to today and its not in the same league as Google Now.

Even something as simple as asking what the weather is like, Siri only tells me the high and low for the day while Alexa on my Amazon Dot tells me the temperature as well as conditions.

I've found that Siri does not understand me well at all. I have an Indian accent, and despite using 'English India', it's quite poor in comprehending my speech. Amazon's Echo works perfectly. I've almost never had a problem with Amazon's speech recognition.

Even Google's voice recognition on iOS' Chrome app works remarkably well. Of Google's, Amazon's and Apple's voice recognition, Apple's is a distant third. I pretty much use Siri only to set my alarm or the timer.

As a side note - Ask Siri when Daylight Saving Time starts, it cannot answer it. It just tells you the local time. Was quite surprised that it cannot answer such a basic question. Amazon Echo answers it perfectly. I tweeted that to AppleSupport last weekend.

I think Apple needs to spend more energy on making Siri's voice recognition better and getting the basics right rather than add more jokes.

It's been reported that Apple hired a team of engineers to revamp Siri. If true, hopefully these changes reflect the necessary changes. Siri has a lot potential, it just needs assistance.
