the entire interface is a convoluted mess
So much this. I was shocked coming from iOS 9. As far as I'm concerned they should've stopped at bigger emoji's and the handwritten note feature in landscape mode.

It's stupid and I never used it.

It was just hyped at the keynote cuz the had nothing else to talk about.
Call me hater or whatever, but iOS 10 is a design and functionality disaster for the sake of just being "modern": 4 ways to view widgets, horrible and big notification bubbles with a forced 3D Touch use, iMessage, inconsistent use of blur or edge-to-edge imagery—big shift from the language iOS 7 was trying to impose, Control Centre, inconsistent app design... Ugh.

Thank god is hasn't had more apps. I can't think of how you use the iMessage apps. Seems like some developers just added an iMessage app for the sake of it, no use for it.

Some turn based games could work with iMessage but what else?

I think imessage is used by US users only...

Outside a lot of people use Whatsapp which works on all platforms. I can't force all my contacts to use iphone just so I can use imessage.

Umm I'm in the UK and 99% of the people I know use iMessage, the occasional Android person I just text.

I've used WhatsApp like twice for sending a pic to an Android user.

This is how I know I'm getting old...I don't understand the appeal of stickers. lol

Your not old. This is something that wasn't adopted early on and is still is a fad, similar to how emoticons are expressed. It's some form of a newer way of expression/communicating, like hieroglyphics for example. It's not for me either.

I'm fine with it. It can be fun once in a while. But, it's not something I'll trade for good UX/UI design, or say some new capable computers.

This is the appeal of the iMessage App Store! The hidden unknowns!

Everyone should try it!!! :)

Just six months in and probably half of the message apps aren't even supported by their developers anymore. Hey, it is just like the real App Store!

Given that the iPhones lean towards more affluent / professionals (as a statistical trend) it seems to me that focusing development efforts on stickers and games in a communications platform is ... a waste of effort. Everyone I know uses iMessages to COMMUNICATE. Yes, some emoticons can help, but even with the built-in unicode set we're already at a high saturation point for real-world use.

My use-case only. YMMV.

What can you even do with iMessage apps? I mean Gamepigeon and fandango are awesome for it, but I can't really see what they can do beyond turn-based games and quick information.

No one cares, Why? Because next year Apple will forget all about iMessages and move on the something else that will be half baked, but exceedingly ready for Apple's marketing hype machine. Apple today is all about the splash, and forgets the reality; that making great apps takes some care and feeding. I, for one, am getting tired of the splash and then total abandonment.

You're forgetting that if a contact doesn't have iOS/iMessage, it just falls back to sending a good old SMS, which pretty much everyone can deal with. So no, you're not "forcing" anyone to use any particular kind of phone. I personally need yet another messaging app like "Whatsapp" like I need a hole in the head.

Ok, well, around 0% are humans I interact with, so I'm doing pretty well without it, thanks.

people use the landscape writing? I'd opt out if I could so annoying when it flips to the side.
