I think the iPad 3 with LTE represents what the iPad should have been all along, and a smaller, lighter, faster version would definitely get me to upgrade.

It is great. Considering that the iPad mini came out close to the ipad 3 release, I bet they could have released the ipad 4 with this, at a minimum.

meh. adds no usable value. I like my bezel. try holding that one handed without accidentally flipping a page on an ibook. I can on the mini since it's smaller and significantly lighter.
I'd get a retina mini before this.

Wow

It looks so much like the iPad Mini - amazing. I wonder if they might throw all of us holding off on Android tablets a bone by kicking in some value like offering GPS in the WiFi model or maps that either work or fully integrate with Google maps like they used to do. How about voice recognition that works?? My wife just loves razzing me about how much more full featured and better performing her $249 Nexus 7 32GB is compared to my $559 iPad Mini 32GB 4G that I bought so I could use the GPS through my 4G hotspot. I also have an iPad 3 16GB Verizon, I paid $629 for that I have now reduced to $350 on ebay and still cant sell. Anyone interested? Has a black leather ipad magic cover too that looks cool even though it doesn't stay on very well.

Couldn't find anyone concerned about the aspect ratio. Photo showing the pad, mini and phone shows a radical difference. Why doesn't the pad and mini have a 16x9 ratio? I'd love a mini that was narrow like the phone 5 - easier to hold. Better for movies eh?

If you read the iPad 128 press release iPad is a business paper replacement machine. That is where the value growth is coming from. iPad screen ratio comes from that use not video. Other tablets are targeted more towards video and there just haven't seen that much market unless tied to a service like amazon prime.

To me there is room for Apple in the future to do an 8inch range iPod touch for video uses but they need to keep the iPad at current ratio to be good for tasks where paper is still king.

I guess I must be in the minority but I much prefer having the bezel - with or without the software enhancements. It gives you something to hold onto at any angle without obscuring the screen and especially on the white iPad helps minimize fingerprints. On the mini it's not really an issue. You don't need the bezel so much because it is easier to hold with one hand.

Ok I'am now sold I want a ipad 5 rather than mini, it looks like they cut the size a lot, I hope they did something about the weight. Now the tough part is sitting back and waiting until later this year for them to get released.

I never liked the look of the bezel on the old-version iPads. I always thought that it made the whole thing look like an ungainly fugly mess.

The new design has much more pleasing proportions. The screen still has that weird old fashioned "black-and-white TV" aspect ratio, but given that limitation, this is clearly the best looking iPad yet.

It looks better without the bezel yet is likely more practical with it.

That’s why you need an artificial bezel that you can switch off and on

Hey hey, the 4:3 ratio isn’t THAT old ;)

Thinner bezel! Wow!!!

But methinks at this point we need some real iOS updates and some real innovation from Apple.

One more generation, that is iPad Mini 3, the larger iPad would be selling at a swiftly declining rate. I see more & more people now are carrying iPad Mini instead of the larger iPad. Some professionals may want the larger screen but the common consumer which always drives the sales will dictate. If Apple still wants to sell the larger edition, they need to add a special feature that sets it apart from the pack.

This again feels like evolution, not revolution.

------------

EDIT: People have asked repeatedly how it could be improved.

Whilst I agree that it is essentially a flat screen computer with a bezel - therefore how can you improve it - I can think of a few off the top of my head, but I'd love to know what would be on everybody's wishlist:

Storage - they used to swap out the bottom storage option, bump it up at the same price. Why is 128gb extra? Surely 32/64/128 should have been brought in at the same price points.

Speakers - the speakers are decent, but even the Amazon Fire has vastly superior sound. It would be tough, but innovate. Simple things like watching the iPad in landscape (i.e. all the time) mean the speakers are facing one direction.

Battery life - there needs to be a genuine innovation with battery life, that's a criticism levelled at pretty much everyone, not just Apple. However it comes - solar, kinetic, a flippin fuel cell! - it needs to happen. This would be revolutionary.

Split screen/Multitasking - yes, this is venturing into iOS turf. But it is a bit ridiculous that we can't respond to a tweet/iMessage whilst watching a film. But yep, I recognise that is an iOS issue.

Storage (Part 2) - why no external storage options?

Bulletproofing - Make it dust & waterproof (a la Sony Experia Z). This is actually really huge, as so many people use it in the kitchen daily (I come home to mine having flour all over it). Imagine reading in the bath without fear!

Processor/RAM - I actually don't think this is much of an issue. It's pretty great.

Screen - Looks like it will be a revolution in terms of thinness, for sure. How about density/durability?

Price - The iPad is going to face increasing competition, not just technologically, but price wise. They won't drop the price, but if they did, the iPad would rule like the iPod does (i.e for the next decade). Apple has the market share right now, but needs to learn from the iPhone debacle it is currently facing.

The point is also that if I'm completely wrong and it really is ridiculously difficult to conceive ways to revolutionise the iPad, then how can they justify only incremental updates with such a continually high/increasing price?

Google and Amazon are now providing rival tablets for far less (and then imagine 2 years from now). If they can do what the iPad does and more - the Mini was a purely reactive move by Apple - then Apple needs to justify the high price.

Thoughts?

Apple has always priced products higher than their competition. The iPad is manufactured using first class materials and is a quality product. In addition some of the competitive products like those made by Amazon are sold at a loss just so that buyers will buy software content for their device.

You mentioned additional storage. I feel like the cloud works beautifully to provide a repository for media that otherwise would take up lots of storage space on the iPad.

I don't understand your comment regarding the screen since the Retina display is already considered to be state of the art.

In general, the iPad has to undergo evolutionary changed at this point. The revolution was the introduction of the original iPad. Just as with any product after the product is introduced there is a period of evolutionary changes which occurs over a number of product cycles. For example, when the Retina display was introduced on the iPad the technology at the time necessitated that the iPad be made thicker and heavier for a number of reasons including the need for a larger battery. Now as the display technology catches up the iPad can again be made thinner and lighter without sacrificing the quality of the display. That may be an evolutionary change but it is the way that it has to be because of the available technology.

Everything is not a marketing ploy so that Apple can squeeze more money from its customers! In addition, everyone always says they want big changes but when event the smallest things are changed, such as the Lightening connector as an example, there is an outcry that Apple is doing it for nefarious reasons.

I thought the whole idea for the wider bezel was to prevent errant touch screen events from your hands. In fact, I don't understand how the mini got a narrower vertical bezel if that was the case.

Does anyone have experience with the mini that could speak do this point?

welcome to apple. you'll soon realize that's how their business model works so well -- iterative improvement. they do not invent flying unicorns every year.

I will give Apple a hard time about leaving out the most common features just to eek out a few extra dollars on the next release, however I really wonder what they are suppose to do each year, I wonder what any company is suppose to do every year. For three years the iPad 1 vs the iPad 4 is not bad.

I love stuff like this.

So basically the iPad4 will look old and crappy compared to the iPad5 because of a smaller bezel. Surely it can't be because of it's back because, well, who exactly looks at the back of the ipad when using it? The screen, that thing where you find content and stuff, is on the front, which looks practically the same as the iPad4 or 3 or 2. Not that anyone would know what version you had whilst you sat using it in Starbucks because you'll have your Apple SmartCover covering it.

I think the finger detection software works pretty good for me. Let's get rid of the bezel, use home button gesture (remove home button), and move camera behind the display. Edge-to-edge display.

Then, can I have an iPad Mini that folds in half and has phone call capabilities? That way I can fit it into my pocket, have a huge screen, and not have to carry my iPhone (two devices) around with me.

I have never met a more perfect device than the iPad Mini (except maybe the Newton, for its time).

Removing the home button would be a mistake. It is the single greatest asset that makes the iPad (and all iOS devices) intuitive for those who've never used one. The tactile feedback is useful as well. I think it should be smaller, though.

We cannot always assume that others are as tech savvy as we are (which was Steve Jobs's driving force to make computing easy for everyone).

Thinner bezel! Wow!!!

But methinks at this point we need some real iOS updates and some real innovation from Apple.

I think if they release it a shown it'll be innovative enough.

I really hate that word now: "innovation".

iOS just needs more features and capabilities, not a complete re-write as many are alluding to. Apple nailed the basics the first time around. It just needs more polish (basically, the things people jailbreak for).

I think you have it wrong...

At least it should be different, if they go down that path I hope the size is more like this not a smaller screen to just match the height but lets extend the screen a bit and still stay within a nice width:)
