You do realize the whole purpose of iOS is to get away from peripherals, right? It's a touch based operating system. macOS is not. It never was intended to be and it never will be. When are people going to understand macOS will NEVER be emulated or ported to an iOS device? If you want a portable device that gives you trackpad capabilities, Apple has a whole line available. It's called their MacBook. It's a lot easier to take iOS functionality and bring it to macOS. You can't do it the other way around. Notifications, handoff, apps, etc; those all started from iOS and went to macOS. Not the other way around.

I understand what you are saying. But it could also work like this:
Apple could release something like a maccover for the new ipad pro' s.
And develop some kind of keyboard that connects through smartconnector to the ipad pro.
The keyboard could have x86 /mac os hw inside.

When you connect the keyboard , you can choose between macos(monitor) mode without touchscreen capabilities and with keyboard/trackpad controll, or ios mode with touchscreen controll and the basic keyboard capabities that the smart keyboard has right now.

The next iPad will come in two sizes, 10.x" and 12.9"

The 10.x" will have the same body size as the current 9.7" iPad
And the 12.9" will have a smaller body than the current generation

Both will be bezel-less

i think this is likely.

I still have a first gen air that works great, has amazing battery life and does about eveything I still need it to do just like the day I bought it.

But I'm dying for a new one and have been waiting a while now to upgrade. Most likely will buy the next 9.7 or 10" rumor when it comes out so I'm hoping it's a good one!

i dont think its likely, at least as is being rumored in this story.

on the other hand, we could dream that the middle sized iPad mentioned in this story is actually the detachable component that will be attached to a full keyboard/trackpad.

i really want a light, touchable device such as this rumored iPad that would be an independent device when not attached to a mac keyboard with a trackpad (and running iOS), but, when it is attached to a mac keyboard with a trackpad it turns into a screen for a base running macOS.

with Pages, Numbers, and Keynote iOS and macOS versions so closely matching, and other apple software also very close feature set wise...

Apple's laptop market is shrinking because they are continually releasing crap laptops. If they released a decent, upgradable, port friendly laptop their luck would be different.

Apple have never released upgradeable laptops, Apple are well known for being a closed system and not wanting users to open up their devices. I wouldn't exactly call their laptops crap, they still have a decent design and a great OS. Are they expensive? Yes but I think you pay the premium at the start, but the devices last a long time and require far less maintenance than any other computers on the market.

Wait so the big one is going to be the middle of the road one, and the middle size is going to be the high end?

Sorry, but I'm calling BS. Apple's philosophy with specs is that bigger is better. The plus iPhones have higher specs than the normal ones. The 15" MBP has bigger specs than the 13". Always been the way.

Besides, that's going to be one hell of a confusing line-up:

Big Screen, Middle spec
Middle Screen, High spec
Little Screen, Little spec

Makes no sense at all.

Yeah! And when they would not have removed vga, they would still be number one!
Sjeez, people wining about using a usb-c adapter are really getting anoying.
It is all about price of the adapters, if people would just admit that, i can understand that argument. Not the one about using an adapter if you need it.

A9. Really? So how much is this going yo cost for a lower priced pad? Same proce as the air 2 when it first came out? Because thats plain greedy. The starting pro is too expensive imo.

Size wise. 7.9, 9.7, 12.9 make more sense. Give all models a a10x, a10xm on a mini(somewhere between the a10 and a10x) the same ram please apart from of course display resolution.

Never released? You may want to think about recent history!!

It wasn't so long ago the hard disk / SSD, RAM, and battery used to be user replaceable. The case was designed in such a way - with Apple instructions.

People commonly swapped the DVD drive for another SSD, or replaced the BT 3 for a BT 4.x module...

Was that intended by Apple tho? Could you do it without voiding the Apple guarantee? If so then I stand corrected! I've always seen Apple as the company that didn't want it's users to get inside it's devices.

IPad sales will continue to decline, and decline rapidly. It is really a poor form factor with a crippled OS. Also way overpriced. The rapidly decreasing sales data are actually very clear as the article points out. 20% year over year declines.

Apple is committing suicide.

Yes it was intended. Apple gave instructions of how to open the case etc. And No, you wouldn't be voiding the guarantee by replacing the Battery or RAM etc. You'd be on shaky ground regarding the BT module upgrade if something went wrong in that area.

E.g.,
Link for replacing memory: https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT201165
Hard disk : https://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1534/en_US/MacBook_13inch_Hard_Drive_DIY.pdf

I had my laptop fixed under AppleCare *after* swapping out the hard disk for SSD and upgrading 8GB to 16GB! The logic board was replaced in one instance, and the display replaced in another.

For reference, 2011 early Macbook Pro.

I agree, it could be so much more. Especially for the increased price.

I can't understand the purpose in going for this bizarre in-between sizing as if 1/2 an inch more is the silver bullet. If this is true it proves they got the earlier sizing wrong and its looks bad for them. What attracted me to Apple in the beginning was their generally small line-up of products which they trusted to be good enough to sell themselves. Now it seems they're confused and can't make their minds up about what's right or wrong. The iPhone 5c gets one generation, the iPhone 5SE gets one generation, the Apple Watch seems like an overpriced disaster - they're clearly experimenting with customers as opposed to committing to something they trust is good enough to sell itself.

Market-wise, Kuo believes "the worst has passed" for Apple's iPad as he predicts a narrower year-on-year shipment decline in 2017. The analyst puts this down to an improved product mix, decreasing exposure to the iPad mini, and an improved cost structure due to an increasing number of suppliers of touch-module lamination and display panels, with Samsung being "the biggest winner" in joining previous monopoly-holder Silicon Works to supply the latter.

What do we make of "decreasing exposure to the iPad mini"?

Who cares about the screen size anymore? We want to know how thick it is, and how many emojis it comes with, like all your other news posts!

And at a more serious level - I don't think Apple will change the screen size until they are ready to totally overhaul the iPad GUI and move away from the classic iPhone view. And given Cooks view on how the iPad is the de facto productivity standard, I'd say that will take quite some time.

10.5" display at 326 PPI gives a resolution of 2732x2048, which is incidentally the same resolution as the 12.9" iPad Pro. No overhauling would be necessary, especially when you consider that many apps will already have been optimised for this higher resolution.

This would, amongst other things, allow for two full-sized tablet apps to be run alongside one another. Sounds promising indeed.

LONG, LONG before Apple Stores ... we had an official reseller in my town who were worth every penny you paid them. They knew MBPs inside out and could replace, update, and repair them without fail ... sadly, they are no longer in the computer business.

Seriously, whats with everything being labelled as "Pro"? The only item Pro about most Apple hardware these days is the Price Tag!

Does having pencil support and a connector that gives extended functionality really make an iPad a "Pro" device??

Soc and other specs of the new 10.5(?) will be the same as the new 12.9, the 12.9 could even feature a faster clocked soc and more memory(like they did with the current 9.7 inch and 12.9 inch ipad pro).
No way the 12.9 inch will have lower specs.

What bothers me is that when they trim the bezels of the 10.5 that it will probably still fit the smart keyboard of the current 9.7 inch ipad pro.
But when they reduce the bezels of the new 12.9 inch, the keyboard won' t fit anymore. So how about making it 14 inch with the same footprint as the current 12.9?(not likely). They could make the 12.9 in the current form factor, with an updated display(wide color ,and truetone) and new internal hw. And update the form factor/design a year later).

My guess for the new line-up:
Ipad se: 7.9 inch with an a9 or a10.(no smartconnector or pencil support)
Ipad: 9.7 inch with an a9x, like the current ipad pro, but without smart connector and doesn' t work with the pencil)

Ipad pro: 10.5 with new design, same footprint/dimensions as current 9.7 ipad pro, and new hw, and perhaps even the 2732x2048 res of the current 12.9)

Ipad pro 12.9 , new hw, same res, wide color gamut, truetone.

Battery life would be terrible. The only way that would work, with reasonable battery life is for an ARM Processor. You'd get, maybe, 3 - 4 Hours of battery life, not to mention the weight and design of this would be completely impractical. It'd add thickness, and weight. You'd be much, much, better off just getting a MacBook of some kind.

I could see them making iOS much more powerful and useful by adding certain elements from macOS. I could even see Apple going so far as to allow Magic Trackpad to work with iOS. I could see the Apple Pencil being used on macOS via TouchPad in the future. I could also see better integration between macOS and iOS and iOS being a 'Second Screen' much like DuetDisplay.
