The math is simple, a 2732 x 2048 resolution with 326 pixels per inch would make the screen 10.47 inch.

I genuinely don't understand why they keep upgrading specs and screen sizes. Tablets are primarily used as consuming devices. Easy and minimal input to watch Tv/ movies, play games, read and Internet.

For productivity you need a fully fledged computer either desktop or laptop with a full range of input devices and a processor/ GPI that was designed for creation.

Keep the iPad simple, cheaper and with high capacity memory, that's what most consumers need.

I am guessing the following lineup:

9.7" iPad Pro replaces the iPad Air 2 as the entry level iPad. Specs should remain unchanged. 2gb ram, A9x processor. Perhaps a modest price drop.

10.5" iPad Pro - this will be what the iPad Pro was to the iPad Air 2 last year. Maybe 3gb ram and A10x processor? Biggest highlight will be the 2732x2048 resolution allowing for 2 full-sized apps running side-by-side. Perhaps with the shrunken bezels, the 10.5" iPad Pro might be able to use the same smart keyboard as the 9.7" iPad Pro, allowing Apple to avoid fragmenting their supply chain too much. Possibly an additional 1-2 extra hardware features, such as the iPhone 7's improved display or front-facing speakers? I doubt we will see force touch though.

I don't think we will see USB-C, but hopefully the iPad Pro will support USB-C fast-charging and sport USB 3.0 speeds.

12.9" iPad Pro - this will be an upgraded version of the current 12.9" iPad Pro. It will have the best specs (in terms of ram and CPU at least) and be marketed as a laptop-replacement. Likely still 4gb ram with A10x processor.

Apple may well be looking at dropping the 7.9" iPad as well. My guess is that Apple wants to standardise the support of the Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard across their iPad line, and a 7.9" iPad mini is simply too small to accommodate a smart keyboard design that doesn't compromise the typing experience (already, the smart keyboard for the 9.7" iPad Pro feels too cramped for me).

For accessories, I am hoping for an Apple Case with an integrated Apple Pencil holder, maybe more smart connector peripherals. We may see a few lighting adaptors as well (lightning to VGA+audio jack for people who want to hook up their iPhones to projectors?).
I would be saddened if the 7.9 got dropped. It was easy to handle and throw in a bag for portability everywhere and was nice to hold and light weight.Looks like I will need to just get a hold of NVIDIA Shield to handle that form factor

Seriously. Is the addition to the lineup a good thing or bad thing? Is there demand for them? Or are people just bemoaning more inventory in apples lineup?

"When Jobs took the reins as interim CEO in July of 1997, Apple was making more than 350 different products, many of which seemed redundant, expensive, and outdated. In order to get the company focused on making better products that made more sense to consumers, he cut that number down to just 10. He knew that in order for the company that he co-founded to survive, it needed to be leaner and more focused, than it had been under previous CEO Gil Amelio.

At the core of the new line-up were four products, a consumer laptop and desktop, as well as a laptop and desktop designed for professionals. Each of those computers had various configurations of course, but as far as Apple was concerned, the product line remained extremely streamlined and simple. This allowed the company to focus on new technology and design, which resulted in the first iMac, a computer that made waves due to its unique looks, and shift away from traditional IO ports in favor of USB – something that was radical at the time."

Why? All iOS users can download all the apps that I've worked on. Being able to download from other sources wouldn't benefit me, wouldn't benefit the users, it only would potentially help pirates.

I am also a user and it would benefit me.

The next iPad will come in two sizes, 10.x" and 12.9"

The 10.x" will have the same body size as the current 9.7" iPad
And the 12.9" will have a smaller body than the current generation

Both will be bezel-less
This rumor makes zero sense. Why have 2 iPads so close in size? And why make the 10" iPad bezel free but keep bezels on the 12.9"? Does this guy actually read what he writes before he publishes it?

IPad sales will continue to decline, and decline rapidly. It is really a poor form factor with a crippled OS. Also way overpriced. The rapidly decreasing sales data are actually very clear as the article points out. 20% year over year declines.

Apple is committing suicide.
You obviously want/need a laptop or desktop. Stop trying to turn iPad into one.

I simply cannot imagine a world where businesses only opted for high-end and/or higher margin even though those two things do not always correlate.

That is totally, 100% unfair. They should make high-end products and sell them at the lowest possible price so that everyone can enjoy them. Or they should just give away what they make.

Yes, Apple is one of the rare companies that can get away with such huge profit margins while the rest of the retail world struggles with competition and slim margins. But people here love to throw out the "businesses are in business to make money" generalization like that somehow is an excuse for Apple to rip people off.

The profit margins aren't high enough. Apple want consumers to buy the more expensive iPads, which have higher profit margin.

(The iPad Mini is a popular device)
Like every other for profit company on the planet. Last time I checked Surface Studio ain't cheap.

I hate that at Apple, small size now means older and less capable hardware. Buy a 21" iMac (my preference) and you're stuck with integrated graphics. Buy an iPhone SE (which I own) and you get old hardware. And now with the iPad. This sucks.

More than aware ... but I know of NO others that continue to short their products of the latest tech in order to maintain their corporation-leading profit margins like Apple does.

You see it everywhere across all lines of consumer goods. It's called product differentiation and allows companies to sell products at multiple price tiers in order to capture as many potential customers (who have a range of budgets) as possible.

Some examples: computers, displays, speakers, smartphones, automobiles, TVs, washing machines, homes, tools, printers, carpet, roofing material, bicycles, watches, ham radio equipment, garden hoses, calculators, batteries, semiconductors, and on and on.

If you have a keyboard, you also have a charger.

True, but like I said, that'll add even more weight to the device. You're basically completely destroying the entire point of an iPad once you go down this route. I mean, I guess you could just take the bottom half of a MacBook and just 'snap' it onto an iPad. Still don't think that's a very practical solution to this problem. Because, that that point, you basically have a MacBook... so, why not buy a MacBook?

Show me proof that there is no demand for iPad minis. How can you even say this is a supply and demand issue?

You somehow think a A10X 256GB OLED iPad mini wouldn't sell?

Are you capable of comprehension and are you able of following a thought? It seems the answer is no.

YOU SAID:

Imagine a world where businesses opted for only high-end product with higher margins and completely rid themselves of the cheaper options. Would that seem fair?

AND I SAID:

This is not how supply and demand works.

Now you twisted that and asking a nonsense compared to what I was replying to.

Both current iPad Pro models support USB3 at 5 Mbps transfer rates BUT you'll have to purchase the supported lightning to USB 3 capable to get that. I'm curious if the latest iBRidge or Samsung iXpand lightning-USB3 sticks work as well or ??

My current understanding is that only the 12.9" iPad Pro supports USB 3.0 speeds and fast charging. Not the 9.7" iPad Pro. For some strange reason.

IMHO until the iPad can also emulate macOS on it with the use of peripherals such as a mouse or track pad keyboard it will remain just a consumption item.

Apple has made a conscious decision to keep the iPad as an entertainment and content device rather than moving forward and adding the capability to make it into a productivity device. They seem terrified to add the necessary features, fearing that doing so will hurt Macbook sales. By the same token, they’ve decided that moving forward on the Macbook would hurt iPad sales!

I have an iPad Air 2 that was provided to me by my company. It has taken a lot of getting used to because it’s so much less capable than my LG Android tablet. The LG tablet is a true productivity tool. If I need to do documents like spreadsheets, presentations, or text, I can use it as a laptop with a mouse and keyboard. Apple allows a Bluetooth keyboard on the iPad Air, but adamantly refuses mouse support. The LG tablet has both a MicroUSB port and a full-size USB port, and a MicroSD card. Moving documents or content between the Android tablet and another device is a breeze, while with the Macbook it’s a major undertaking.

Apple should introduce a commercial version of the iPad and iOS that can compete with Android. USB port, mouse support, more Bluetooth profiles.

For the Macbook, it may be too late. Apple is probably two years away from a touch screen Macbook. A touch screen laptop is incredibly useful in a host of applications.

The marketing concept of decontenting one product to protect another product’s sales rarely works because a competitor will emerge that doesn’t do that. The plethora of new 2 in 1 Windows 10 machines is bad news for the iPad Pro and the Macbook Pro.

Why on earth do you need a track pad or mouse with a touch screen device? I use my iPad as a second monitor with my MBP (using Duet Display) and it's odd to see the mouse cursor on the iPad. It works in the context of secondary monitor but not as a primary input method IMO.

Except for the one year old iPad pros that come with the added bonus of a higher price, the iPads, like the macs, are woefully out of date. You would have to be an absolute idiot to buy an iPad mini for example.

The MBP is not out of date by any means. My 3 year old iPad Air still works flawlessly so I am not sure how it is out of date. Each time I look at the 2 in 1 (Convertible) devices I remain unimpressed, not even considering Windows 10. The iMacs will be refreshed this year I'm sure. The iMac is still the most elegant looking and best performing desktop experience IMO. It will only get better.

I understand what you are saying. But it could also work like this:
Apple could release something like a maccover for the new ipad pro' s.
And develop some kind of keyboard that connects through smartconnector to the ipad pro.
The keyboard could have x86 /mac os hw inside.

When you connect the keyboard , you can choose between macos(monitor) mode without touchscreen capabilities and with keyboard/trackpad controll, or ios mode with touchscreen controll and the basic keyboard capabities that the smart keyboard has right now.
That's kind of brilliant. Thanks for the vision, very interesting..

I didn't think the 9.7 Pro had USB3 transfer rates... only the 12.9 does. The article you linked to was published when the 12.9 Pro was released and months before the 9.7.

" Sadly, the 9.7″ iPad Pro is relegated to USB 2.0 speeds only, which is a major disappointment for anyone needing professional video and photography workflows."

There was Apple, releasing the ALL-NEW 9.7" iPad and slapping on the Pro label ... it's our best iPad to date ... problem was they left off features already available on other Apple devices ... like OIS, like higher RAM, like 2nd-generation Touch ID, like under-clocking the A9X, and so on ... that's screwing with the market, not differentiating ... yet they called her an iPad Pro, slapped on a higher price point, and told everyone it's their BEST iPad to-date.

Apple have never released upgradeable laptops, Apple are well known for being a closed system and not wanting users to open up their devices. I wouldn't exactly call their laptops crap, they still have a decent design and a great OS. Are they expensive? Yes but I think you pay the premium at the start, but the devices last a long time and require far less maintenance than any other computers on the market.
No, they are not designed to last. The monitors break much too easily. Mac books need to be designed as sturdy as an ipad. Their screens are not. Too easy to break the MBP screen.

I find the idea of a bezel-free tablet quite curious. More accurately I find the idea ridiculous, but I would reserve actual judgment until trying it.

I am however very interested in a new form factor, as I am growing increasingly tired of the preposterously sharp chamfer on current iPads. Whoever thought that was a good idea...welll...if you're reading, Johnathon, it wasn't! Steve would have never...;)

I wouldn't mind quite so much if Apple's own fairly rubbish smart case didn't also have razor sharp edges!

:D

The original iPad had sharper edges than the current Pro models. (I own both original and current.)
