They've gotta give buyers a reason to upgrade to the next iPad mini somehow...

1. It would smaller, i.e. suites a different type of user
2. it would be sold along side the current one and wouldn't be an 'upgrade' but a different product.

It definitely will have a camera. iPhone, iPad and iPod touch do. Why would it be left out on this?

The pic does look legit though..

I assume it will have the same price point as the iPad did when it came out. That is hundreds over the competition.

Are you referring to the iPad that pundits claimed would be $899 or $999 when released, but was sold for $499? A price point that, for quite some time, companies that followed with their own tablets would not match unless you bundled a 2-year data plan with your purchase?

I have an original iPad and not once have I wanted a camera on the back. Maybe one in the front for facetime but I have an iPhone 4S and an iMac for that. If it helps keep the cost closer to $199 with no camera and no Retina display then I'm all for it.

Apple did release the Configurator Mac App a few months back for managing iPads and the like in Retail and School situation and for iOS 6 they've previewed single app mode. If they are really committed to developing that customer base stripped back version of both iPad sizes* with no cameras and reduced storage (4Gb) sold as volume only would be an obvious next step.

Retail versions in that case may still have cameras, and just hasn't leaked yet.

*assuming there will be two in the near future.

That's the point. The iPad itself is not a good 'portable' device in terms of everyday use on the go, commute, etc. It's a great 'portable' device for around the house, at work and at home, on vacation, etc. But myself, including many others have had our iPads with us and have taken pictures with them many times if we happen to have it in our backpack or on our person.

That is why a 7" tablet that can fit in your jacket pocket/smaller purse/cargo pants pocket is...which is why a camera makes more sense on it. In fact, a rear camera on the iPad 10" makes probably less sense then not having it on the iPad Mini.

If the iPhone has one and the iPod Touch has one, both which are very portable on the go devices, then it would make sense that the iPad mini would have one also.

It would be highly unusual not to have a camera. Apple's addicted to cameras.

It is not inconceivable that Apple would remove one of the cameras.
Too bad it won't have Siri though.

Apple has kept the iPad 2 in the product lineup at a lower price point. With the change in dock connectors, I can see Apple offering a new full-size retina display iPad alongside a low-cost iPad mini. The small tablet will also likely be wifi-only and be limited to black in order to reduce the number of SKUs. Since Siri requires more server bandwidth, it becomes another expendable cost-saving option. However, with so much competition in the mini tablet market, Apple must leave enough features to maintain product superiority.

It would be silly to keep it wifi only though. A smaller tablet is more portable hence people will want 3G. I get they want to keep costs as low as possible but that wouldnt make sense IMO.

I think that would be a deal breaker for me. I may even have bought a Nexus 7 by now if it had 3G but I wanted to see what September brought after all the rumours.

Ding! Give that boy a cookie.

More likely is that this is a rear shell from some 7" Android tablet. Someone just stuck an Apple logo on it.

No chance that any iPad will be anything but 4:3 aspect ratio.

It's not 16:9, it's 4:3 with wider bezel on the shorter edges. That way you'll be able to hold it with one hand without needing a wide bezel.

Also, they will sell tons of it to students. They need to keep the price as close to $200 as possible. So no front facing camera is acceptable if that means affordability.

Most probably buy smaller tablets as they are cheaper.

Bit like going for a 32" tv over a 42" tv. You would always prefer the larger one but if it's cheaper then..
I'd like to see you hold on to the railing with one hand and use your other hand to read on your 10'' tablet while riding the bus or subway. Then, repeat that trick with a 42'' TV for extra credit.
