The size and price of the iPad mini is just about right to me, so it seems silly that it would be discontinued. Although, my iPhone 6 Plus has replaced my iPad mini, so who knows.

The only thing that actually keeps me using my iPad Mini are iPad-specific apps that I enjoy. If apps start to get optimized for the 6 Plus with iPad-esque features, it will be the end of iPad purchasing days for me.

This is probably the most idiotic thing I've read on this site. Not saying much, by the way. How can you post something that is sketchy by your own opinion?

The mini kind of lost its lustre as the lightweight iPad with the arrival of the Air.

I would sacrifice screen real estate in favour of a lighter device, but when the Air gives you both then the reasons for going smaller become less compelling.

Also, I know it's been said here before but by now we must all be thinking that the 12" iPad and the 12" MacBook Air are the same device, right?

You can't be serious. The iPad mini's size allows it do certain things that are much easier than on the full sized iPad..for example reading magazines or articles when on the subway, or eBooks and such. There is no reason why you couldn't have the iPad mini, iPad Air and the iPad Pro with the same internals. Give people the choice to pick the size they want without having to compromise on internal specs.

To all those people saying that the iPhone 6 Plus has effectively become a replacement for the iPad Mini: what are you smoking?

First of all, the devices do not serve the same function, whatsoever. You cannot read books or newspapers or browse the web comfortably on an iPhone, period. Forget about any kind of productivity apps.

Secondly, and more importantly, why would Apple essentially be encouraging us to merge our two devices (iPad Mini and iPhone 5) into just one device, the iPhone 6 Plus?

As a result, Apple's reasoning would be that the average customer will opt for just one device instead of two. Does that not just mean less money for them, or am I seriously missing something here???

This sounds silly, I think the iPad Mini is the best size for a tablet. It's portable and fits into your hand easily, and it used to be good value for money (that's no longer the case now).

Either make it really affordable, or give it awesome features, but don't make it expensive with an old processor.

Discontinue it? Probably not.

Deprioritise it and minimise R&D spend on future versions? Absolutely.

Let's face it, aside from minor spec bumps to keep it current and support the latest iOS, what future innovations do you see for the iPad Mini in terms of features, size or otherwise?

In the iPad show next year, expect it to take the place of the iPad Mini 2 and lose $100 from its selling price.

Perhaps the iPhone 6 Plus is part of the effort to do away with the Mini.

The debate of doing many things mediocre vs. doing few things well is only a valid debate worth having if you can do a few things well. Apple does few things and hasn't been doing them well lately (on the software side in my experience). Apple is such a huge company in terms of sales but it seems to have the capacity of a much, much smaller company.

I know a lot of people think because of the 6 Plus, the iPad mini isn't needed, but the same could be said of the 13'' MacBook Air and 13'' MacBook Pro.

You pick a combination that works for you: 6 Plus and iPad, 6 and iPad mini. Or whatever combination of iPhone, iPad, Mac you like.

What a crock of ****. The iPad mini retina had the same spec as the air and Apple obviously realised that they needed to make the air higher spec to differentiate it by more than the screen size. That's where the iPad mini 3 comes in. Highly doubtful that apple would do away with the mini as it now fits the budget iPad price range well.

since iphone 6+ i could give a damn about my ipad. iphone 6+ and macbook is the sweet spot

The saying is 'I couldn't give a damn'. It means you could not give less of a damn if you tried, meaning you don't care. 'I could give a damn' means you do actually care about it.

Stop getting our English phrases wrong, you make them make no sense! >:-[

I' m definitely waiting for the big iPad Pro/Plus (and pray it will have stylus), but gimping or getting rid of iPad mini would be very bad idea. I firmly believe there is place and use for all 3 sizes (for iPads and iPhones for that matter).

If this is true then it would really be a slap in the face for someone like me. Right now, I have a lineup of Apple products that is virtually perfect. I need the following devices each for specific functions:

Phone- Communication.

Tablet- Information/ content consumption.

Laptop- Content creation/ work.

Hence, owning an iPhone 5, an iPad Mini, and a Macbook Pro is perfect. I have no use for an iPad Air as it is not portable.

And as for an iPhone 6 Plus... I find that just laughable. Too big to be comfortable to hold/pocket at all times, and too small to read or watch movies or browse the web on. I still don't understand the point.

Keep praying! Doubt it will do any good, you might as well pray to win the lottery.

Sounds silly, but maybe Tim wants introduce bigger iphones in the future.

For me iphones 6/6+ are out of the question because I can't use them by one hand. That's why instead I'm going to buy Mini 2 with great discount, actually it almost twice cheaper than 6+.

It's a shame apple become more and more out of touch with customers.

You know, discontinuing the iPad Mini or keeping it with pseudo-updates that basically increase costs exclusively due to gimmicks aren't too different.

Apple needs to learn: go Pro or go n00b. Right now, Apple is firmly in n00b territory.

I can see them reducing the price and updating it less but I think the Mini will be around a long time yet.

When the Air came out it was so much lighter than the previous generations it was portable enough, making the Mini redundant for me. And for the beefier apps I use it's just useful to have a bigger screen.
