I understand both thoughts

iPad Mini: Great portability and very popular. The iPad mini is a terrific iPad. And now the Mini 2 is a terrific bargain. If the screen was as nice as larger iPad I'd own one.

That said, the popularity of the iPhone 6 Plus and this recent Mini 3 upgrade certainly could contribute to a report like this, but all of it is speculation without an iPad Pro in the wild.

Apple is not Samsung to have every little screen estate...4.7" 4.8" 4.9" 5" ...etc

so for Apple with the introduction of the iphone 6+ the need for the ipad mini is no longer required so they need a strong ipad 9.7" and one with 12"

I hope this is untrue - as I'm wandering in the other direction!

I want a full-featured, fast, high-function small tablet.

Right now, I'm eyeing the HP Stream 8, due out Any Day Now™ - an Intel-based full-Windows 8.1, 8" tablet. $149. Yeah, it won't be "fast", but it will be able to run any software my desktop Windows 8 machine can. (Oh, and that price includes up to 200 MB a month of free LTE data - same as if you buy an LTE-equipped iPad from T-Mobile; only in this case, you get the entire tablet for only slightly more than the price Apple charges just to add LTE to an iPad!)

It makes sense, considering they have the iPhone 6 Plus out now which is only an inch and half off the mini. I think the mini won't be around in 24 months.

Maybe they're planning on a 6" iPhone OR make the next mini a phone.

When the Air and mini2 hit last year it was time for me to upgrade from iPad1. So I go to the Apple Store with enough cash on hand to buy whichever one I liked best. After hanging out with both of them for an hour or so it was clear that when I picked up the mini it was the one. I have no regrets. Especially since it is still basically the current model even with the 3 out now.

They need improvements to iOS to support iPads.

They need multi-user support. Android has had it for quite a while already. We bought a Nexus 7 because I didn't want to share my iPad with my kids.

They need multi-tasking support, i.e. multiple apps sharing the screen at the same time.

Given Apple's glacial rate of change, that likely means nothing until next years WWDC.

Seriously? Ask people who own a 6+ if they want to buy an iPad, which one would they buy, Air or Mini? Only idiots would buy Mini when already owned a 6+.

Have you not considered the fact that there is an entire class of consumer who refuses to buy a 6 Plus because it is a horrifically vulgar device?

So for these people, myself included, for whom an iPhone 6 is already bordering on oversized, they just *might* want a mini to keep handy for reading, browsing, films, etc.

I refuse to buy a 6 Plus as a replacement for an iPad Mini. I'd rather have no iPad at all. An iPad Air serves no purpose for me as it can't be used with one hand and is not portable.

Your post was parochial and selfish.

Show me an iPhone 6+ that doesn't require an expensive voice/data plan and doesn't cost more when subsidized than the Wi-Fi iPad Mini costs unsubsidized, and you might have a point.

Besides, at last count (at least from what I've read), Apple sells about as many iPad Minis (in total) as full-size iPads. This report makes about as much sense as smoking bananas.

With the Air and the Air 2 being so freeging light and svelt with a way better screen due to the size, it's not a surprise that the mini is falling out of favor. It's not like the mini fits into pants pockets or whatever. Sure it's slightly more portable that the full size ipads but not by much.

And, the larger screen is just a more immersive experience.

I don't feel the mini is that much more comfortable for one hand operation either. The Airs are both fairly easy to hold for most users.

It's not about local phrasing, it's about making a phrase make absolutely no sense in the context you're saying it. It means the exact opposite of what you're trying to put across.

It's frustrating.

What you're getting at is my pet peeve. I hate when people say "I could care less" too. It sounds so dumb.

A 12" model would provide a very useful full-size powerhouse experience for home and office use.
The 7.9" model boasts the extreme usefulness of superior mobility, even fitting in back pockets and jacket pockets.

A line consisting of both offers both sides of what people find valuable in an iPad.

The 9.7" middle model is the mediocre redundant compromise model.

A line consisting of all three allows users to find their place in the spectrum.

Eliminating the mobile ipad just means you've narrowed the iPad down to two iPads too big to carry around, with one having a more useful full-sized screen.

This is the worst idea I've yet heard.
Even worse than not updating it and pitching it as Mini 3.

I don't think this is likely to be true, while the iPhone 6+ will take a large portion of iPad mini sales I'd imagine there is still a market for a small tablet that doesn't have the phone part and is significantly cheaper than an off contract 6+.

Charging $100 for a fingerprint scanner and gold body color option doesn't leave me with a warm fuzzy feeling of its sales potential until the mini retina inventory sells out.

Seriously... that upgrade bump was a joke.

That upgrade bump was not a joke. It was just an excuse to drop the price of the Retina Mini by 25%, making it a great deal for a top selling product with 100% customer satisfaction. And Apple rarely ever sells out of last years iOS devices.

A mini fits in a typical purse. A 9" to 12" doesn't

I find this rumor pretty hard to believe. The number of iPad Minis I see these days rival that of the larger iPads.

I personally would stop using iPads altogether if they no longer offered a Mini. The full sized models are just too large for my uses and as such I never owned an iPad until they came out with the Mini.
