As long as the smaller one is the same power as the "big" one, they can make it 20 inch big and wrap around someones head for all I care. I just don't want to be short changes with specs on a phone sized phone (if its an iPad mini/iPad air deal i'll be very happy)

This is a report that would fit better on sites like MacOSRumors or LoopRumors. More and more stupid reports being reposted here lately.

Maybe the 5.6-inch one will be the next iPod?

It kind of makes sense to me. Positioned more as a handheld gaming device, less a phone (but still capable of cellular data - with FaceTime, iMessages, Skype and so on). To save costs, display could be just stretched, but with the same resolution.

Thats what the mini is for

I really hope not. That would make them sell what 4 iphones? (Iphone 5s, iphone 6, iphone 6+, iphone 6c), what happened to Steve Jobs's smiling the product line down to a few base products? It seems like Apple is trying to dip their foot into everything these days, I would rather just see core product lines (iPhone 6c and iPhone 6)
I agree but basically it's the same product (running iOS) in different screen sizes. That's innovation these days for Apple.

And the inevitable next rumor is ...

The inevitable next rumor is that due to unforeseen problems Apple has decided to postpone any major changes until 2015. :)

Thats what the mini is for

I think you have a good point, but there are two factors that would differentiate this "not an iPhone" from the iPad mini:

  1. It's a bit smaller, and would fit in a (large) pocket or a small purse.
  2. It would function as a phone. However, I hope the user would use a Bluetooth headset, rather than holding it up to their face.
The phone functionality might have been a detraction for someone that primarily wants a tablet, as the service plans charged significantly more for a phone device. However, AT&T now charges only $15/month for a phone vs. $10/month for a tablet, if you are off-contract and have at least 10GB/month for the shared data plan.

I remember when the iPod Mini was the best selling iPod and Apple killed it with the Nano. When the iPad Mini was introduced I wondered if the naming convention would see it meet a similar fate. Not sure if this rumor has any merit but I honestly would prefer a pocketable iPad than I do a larger iPhone. I just love the dimensions and the iPad software (Mr Reader and Numbers are sooo great).

I think there were a DOZEN different Performa models released in a single year.

But come on... the iPhone wouldn't suffer from that... even if there were (gasp) 4 models of the iPhone :D

Well, technically...

iPhone 5s 16 GB Space Grey
iPhone 5s 16 GB Silver
iPhone 5s 16 GB Gold

iPhone 5s 32 GB Space Grey
iPhone 5s 32 GB Silver
iPhone 5s 32 GB Gold

iPhone 5s 64 GB Space Grey
iPhone 5s 64 GB Silver
iPhone 5s 64 GB Gold

Total BS. If Apple were to realise a 5.6"/5.7" phone it would be under the iPhone name. Why would they do anything different. That's the name that's sold them millions upon millions of phones since 2007.

But not all rumours should be published.

"Sketchy hobo on the street says the next Apple Telephone will have a bigger poking-glass thingy."

Depends who you ask. MacRumors is a business first and foremost. They make money the more posts and click throughs they get. So while there is quality control of course, the more posts, the more revenue.
