why would anybody need touch ID on their mouse? :roll eyes:

for the same reason people want it on an iPad - it's faster than continually typing out a long password when your Mac goes to sleep or to password-protected screen saver, or to open apps like 1Password.

I seriously dont get why here are people against this?

I dont know about you guys if you are even using passwords on your mac but I have a quite long and complicated password not just a "word" and I can type it quite fast in but thats not an elegant solution. Even using an iPhone as unlock wouldnt be that good. Get it out of my pocket every time that many times I dont want to first touch my phone to work on my computer.

My macbook goes to sleep multiple times a day and I often have to type it. Just using touch ID would be so awesome.

A £50 upgraded magic mouse with touch ID would be a massive seller I imagine.

I think it would make more sense for the Touch-ID/home button to be on wireless keyboard (and laptop keyboard). As a "home" button above all normal keys, centered in the middle. It should also act as a "lauchpad" button when single clicked and "mission control" double-clicked. It would thus be very closely aligned with how it behaves in iOS...

Wireless keyboard should finally get illumination. And maybe with a built in battery (lasting a long time with BT LE) and Lightning port at the back (so it can charge the battery and be both wireless and wired keyboard if needed).

PS - I still really hope for a redesigned and more ergonomic Magic Mouse. I have current one and, while I like it, I simply can't use it for longer periods. And I'm not only speaking about the shape - the click is also too hard. After using the mouse for some time my index finger starts to get a harsh pain. This never ever happens with any other mouse (currently I use Logitech Performance MX).

easy, just use the power button

it makes no sense to put it near the trackpad or kb, you only interact with touchid to unlock the pc once per session

I would upgrade my 13" rMBP just for this feature alone.

A MacBook Pro with a camera that had face recognition/retina scan would be awesome!

How is this rumour sketchy? Amongst all the nonsense about Apple making a driverless car and absurd :apple:Watch rumours, this is one rumour that actually makes sense.

It makes more ergonomic sense to place the sensor in the bezel as part of the screen.

It's fairly awkward to get your thumbflat on the top when you're sat in front of it.

why not this?

Your iPhone or iPad or watch is paired with your Mac already. I regularly answer my phone on my iPad mini. Terrific!

My iPhone 6 has Touch ID already. Why can't I use that to pair with the iMac, and fill in all the passwords in Safari. Come to MacRumors on the Mac, I want to post something, and Safari asks me for Touch ID, and it's filled in.

There are rumors about this working eventually on the touchscreen, too. That would be amazing.

Touch ID would be of little use on a MBP and even less useful on a Magic Mouse or Trackpad. The benefit of having it on your phone is because it allows you to have complex passcodes that would be difficult to enter on a tiny keyboard.

Umm.. my immediate assumption about the reason for having TouchID on these devices was that it was all about ApplePay, and not really about 'password-replacement' for securing your device.

Isn't one of the features of ApplePay for improving the security of online shopping, and so extending this to desktop/laptop devices seems a good idea?

Only Apple can do this because they control the complete hardware and software experience. I can't wait for this technology to arrive. It will drive adoption of the Mac platform into even more enterprises.

Do built in fingerprint readers on PCs (Windows computers) even exist nowadays? I remember there was a huge phase a few years ago where fingerprint readers was a customizable configuration, but I don't see it as often now.

Personally I'd be fine with bluetooth touch ID authentication - Pair your iPhone as a trusted device, and when an app needs authentication it can use TouchID from your iPhone's fingerprint sensor.

since the trackpad is glass its totally possible it can be built in to the trackpad yay for that

Yep. I'm totally amazed about the number of people who doesn't realize this. Do they seriously think it would be a separate "button"? :D

Hiding it under the trackpad on MacBook or under the glass surface of magic mouse will be much more convenient and awesome.

Touch ID would be of little use on a MBP and even less useful on a Magic Mouse or Trackpad. The benefit of having it on your phone is because it allows you to have complex passcodes that would be difficult to enter on a tiny keyboard. That's not an issue on a laptop keyboard. There are already apps that will allow you to unlock your MBP with your iPhone or iPad if you really need that functionality. Why mess up the design of the MM & MTP or the MBP for that matter.

TouchID isn't just for passcodes anymore.

What happens if the Magic Mouse goes missing, i.e., laptop stolen or I forget the mouse?

I think having the touchid sensor on the laptop works better. I'd rather not use the mouse with touchid.

This is something I'm waiting for a long time already! I want to use Touch ID on the MNP in combination with a password manager and then I can log into any site by using my finger... No more passwords necessary!
